9th Wonder: from one living legend to another

My "holy shit" moment of the week: getting a Definitive Jux mailing list message crowing about how they redesigned their website, visiting it, and reading this:

"...we're running it back on heads and pulling out the big guns with a new album from MURS, produced entirely by rising star 9th Wonder (fresh off his contribution to Jay-Z’s Black Album)".

Goddamn. "The Threat" was kinda understated but tighter than Bill O'Reilly's pooperhole, so I'm aching to hear more, and Murs is definitely the kind of MC who could do justice to a beat like that. NERD RAP RUNNIN' SHIT IN '04

is Murs the guy who had the song with (Slug maybe) about how they eat all these Prozac pills and antidepressants all the time? If so, I like him.

second that:
9th wonder = good (but not great...yet)
murs = not very good (but not terrible...yet)

That was with Aesop Rock, and yes, that was a larf. He also did a song about skateboarding (and his inability to do a proper kickflip). And apparently he collects action figures. He's kind of a nerd, but at least he's shameless about it.

very shameless about his nerdiness. songs about masturbating and such.

i didn't really like his beats and just thought his voice sounded like aceyalone and maybe i was going through an anti-backpacker moment?

i'll listen again

I kinda figured Murs:Del::Diverse:Talib Kweli

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

murs is not a living legend

fmh, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He is part of the Living Legends crew though.

two months pass...
Nate, you heard the Little Brother album yet?

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Memphis, I'm afraid it's just never going to happen for you.

Not yet, but I copped the Murs 3:16 EP and it's good enough. Average/typical-if-catchy cod-Kanye beats, though there isn't as much lyrical personality as The End of the Beginning.

More like Murs:Aceyalone::Diverse:Kweli

I think Murs is pretty cool.
9th Wonder is dope

four weeks pass...
I just got this. First impression is the beats are nice, the rhymes and flow just OK, but at least they don't interfere with the vibe. I'm not sure if "pleasant" is a compliment in this context, but there it is.

Unintentionally funniest lines of the year, though, might be on "And This Is For..." (which has one of the ablum's smoovest grooves), when he's talking to white hip-hop fans: "What's the reason why my album doesn't sell like his? Don't front like you don't know why the hell that is. It's because he's white..."

Uh, yeah. So why do 50 and Jay-Z and Kanye and and and also sell way more to white kids than you, M? Also, weird words for a guy on El-P's label.

Mursoginist?

I'm pretty sure he's comparing his sales to Aesop Rock and Atmosphere's (yeah, Slug's not white, but all his fans think he is).
