let's talk about Goth!

But not the usual suspects (Bauhaus, Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, the Projekt guys, etc). Basically, I'm interested in really ridiculous over-serious campy type stuff. Like maybe something the guys on that SNL Goth Talk skit would listen to. Or something that sounds like Cradle of Filth minus the metal (ok that might be too horrible). Any recommendations? places to look?

Also, I was kind of hoping that Ned Ragget's album on Tape Mountain would be some sort of lo-fi bedroom goth type shit. but i digress...

i am it!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

lo-fi bedroom goth type shit

Ah, you're thinking of Maybelline Messiah's "And the Dead Will Rise." A recording DOES exist but I was only moral support rather than a direct participant.

"LIAR! LIAR! JESUS ON FIRE!
You crawl with me into a pit of desire!
I scar your flesh, you give me smack
We read Propaganda and hit the sack!

And the dead will rise
And the blood will call
A million faces from the screaming wall
Bring disease, doom, despair
AND DEATH."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

'maybelline messiah' sounds like a band from the bloom county comic strip, ned

geeta (geeta), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps that was the ultimate origin. Donut Bitch was the chief instigator of this supergroup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Seek ye: Rosetta Stone and London After Midnight.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 5 December 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sheep on drugs

dyson (dyson), Friday, 5 December 2003 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheep On Drugs isn't really lo-fi, no matter how fantastic "Acid Test" and "Mary Jane" are.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 December 2003 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You want Faith and the Muse. I mean, as an example.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Friday, 5 December 2003 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Easy. Fields of the Nephilim. Walking into a Haight St. record shop with leather cowboy outfits with dust all over em' like undead. Hanoi Rocks and Sisters of Mercy. The perfect goth spaghetti western with music to match. Is there a millenium collection on them yet?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes, Rosetta Stone ownz this thread. I saw them headline a goth mini-festival at the Roxy in L.A, with Faith and the Muse and Das Ich. They were literally booed off the stage, while the backing tapes kept on playing most of the music. Haha..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I was just downloading lots of this. You want campy?
Check out Specimen. "Sharp Teeth Pretty Teeth" is like a texas BBQ goth song about meeting Satan. "Hex" is cool too.

The 69 Eyes do this song "gothic girl" which is the most cheesiest thing ever. It sounds great. They call it "radio friendly goth-n-roll" from Finland. I guess they were a hair metal band that got into Sisters of Mercy and now they sound like the Sisters crossed with Def Leppard. Well, OK Sisters already have Def Leppard lyrics, but they're not as fun as that.

Moonspell is like Type-O negative except they have some totally poppy stuff that sounds amazing. "Radio friendly" like the above. Search: "Opium" from Irreligious. Also search Wolfheart. It's like their crossover from black metal so it's hard but also super-catchy. They use fuckign Flutes and shit.

Get some Laibach too. I just downloaded "Tanz mit Laibach" which is incredible. Hey, look at this: commie stromtrooper kittens dancing to Laibach. http://www.rathergood.com/laibach/

sucka (sucka), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

another classic = "Goth Booty" (forgot the name of the band but no I don't think there are too many songs around with that title..)

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No love for the current crop of best-selling goth/pop like Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant, Project Pitchfork, Deine Lakaien, De/Vision, VNV Nation etc?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Apoptygma Berzerk

Dan and I lurv this guy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, one of Sheep on Drugs lives 200 yards from me. We call the resin he sells from his flat 'nope' because of low THC content.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Timely thread! I just started a goth band last night in my spare bedroom. "Funeral of Spires" is the band name and 'Always, Always, Always, Always, Always Alone' is the first (hit) single. Hopefully if I learn how to use computers I can upload it.

yours in darkness

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy, I'm almost positive we've had this conversation before because as I bounce up and down and think "WOW COOL!" I'm experiencing severe deja vu.

Also, I DESPERATELY need to hear this "Goth Booty" song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I think we have (senility beckons). Haven't seen him for ages apart from on the street going to shops because (ahem) better supplier came up.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah! Fame, fame fatal fame/It can play hideous tricks on the brain...

BE MY BARBIE DOLL/MARY JANE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still wondering why De/Vision "Closer", Zeromancer "Dr. Online", Deine Lakaien "Generators" and Apoptygma Berzerk "Kathy's Song" were not all massive chart hits.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Apoptygma Berzerk are FANTASTIC and deserve massive success. "Paranoia" is one of the greatest songs ever.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that android lust album might make my top ten this year. Virgin Black's Elegant...and dying is DEFINITELY making my top ten. as i mentioned in a review i wrote about that album, the first line on the record is: "A thousand tears, A thousand eyes/My friends and i we cry/Religion has raped us"!

scott seward, Friday, 5 December 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

apoptygma berzerk have a rather large boston following. & a great live show a few years back!

kephm, Friday, 5 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this demo tape from a shitty goth metal band called Dead By Dawn that had a song about HR Giger. It rhymed "Herr" and "Giger." Like:
Herr... GiGER!
What's inside your mind?

adam (adam), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also London After Midnight's "Psycho Magnet" is awesome.

adam (adam), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm still wondering why De/Vision "Closer", Zeromancer "Dr. Online", Deine Lakaien "Generators" and Apoptygma Berzerk "Kathy's Song" were not all massive chart hits"

In what country? They are supposed to be popular in Germany. They have zero chance in the US though.

fletrejet, Friday, 5 December 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I would point to the Inkubus Sukkubus's mp3.com page, but mp3.com wasn't up the last time I checked.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you all do know there's a band called vampire state building, right?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

on the same compilation there's also a track by prime sinister!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll chime in with the apop love, but im a big VNV nation fan too (and covenant, really). i always thought of rasputina as perfect "goth talk" material. they're 4095370687 times more laughable than switchblade symphony, who are sometimes excellent, and sometimes just embarrassing.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Switchblade Symphony's first album,Serpentine Gallery, is excellent!

Thanks, guys, I'm gonna check all this stuff out!

Lawrence, I'd definitely be interested in hearing your stuff, sounds great!

Vampire State Building..... that is.... so so wonderfully awesome

Matt O'Malley (matthew omalley), Saturday, 6 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

switchblade symphony *were* a good goth band. i saw them open up for gary numan once.
anyways, GLAMPIRE is another "goth talk" winner

kephm, Saturday, 6 December 2003 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Revive!
I've just remembered how fantastic 'Romeo's Distress' is!

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

switchblade symphony *were* a good goth band. i saw them open up for gary numan once.

THIS has the makings of being the greatest concert EVER!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Dang, good stuff! Except this would have been the mid-eighties and Gary was then starting to majorly suck.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

though if numan was double-billed with strawberry switchblade, that might explain just what he's doing on this album cover:

switchblade symphony *were* a good goth band. i saw them open up for gary numan

i saw that tour¡ i don't think it was in the 80's tho. this was, like '97 i think. by then numan's late 80's sucking was a moot point.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it was 97 or something

kephm, Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

d'oh! i misread that as STRAWBERRY SWITCHBLADE ... oh well, gary coulda gotten a stiffy from SWITCHBLADE SYMPHONY too those sweet little witches!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

im kind of new to goth. what is a good album to start with?

blipster grifter, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

killing joke

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, killing joke s/t & nick cave's "your funeral my trial" are both great records.
and anything you can find by dead can dance!

ian, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think Killing Joke or Nick Cave are really representative of goth, whether you choose to call them that or not. Best place to go is the list on this thread.

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

christian death
sisters of mercy
sex gang children
and if you're feeling really kvlt, cindytalk's first album

Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

maybe some virgin prunes while you're at it
the only nick cave that really fits the bill is "prayers on fire" but it'll work

Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

Bo, a 6-month-jackson Portuguese overdrive (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)

if you ask me Alien Sex Fiend are ground zero for the Ridiculous Goth canon

Bo, a 6-month-jackson Portuguese overdrive (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 01:33 (sixteen years ago)

Coming at this from a more contemporary, metal-conscious angle, The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand is probably the most crushingly authentic audio goth experience I've yet heard

See also Virgin Black

and apparently My Dying Bride are of this inclination too, although I haven't given their stuff much of a listen as yet

Young Chizzy (country matters), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

as far as darkwave goes there's not much there except for Lycia frankly

Bo, a 6-month-jackson Portuguese overdrive (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

lycia is good though I think on balance although in the wrong mood they are the worst band of all time

Just one thing I was thinking about as I was getting on the copter (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

god, i love virgin black. what a great band.

scott seward, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

my fave goth album in recent years was: *Android Lust - The Dividing*. love that thing.

scott seward, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

I really like what I've heard of Virgin Black. I need to make one of these nights a Virgin Black night. Am on a bit of a Scottness mission at the moment with the whole "digest entire Anathema output" pledge. Anathema themselves are not quite goth, I think. Almost, but not quite.

Young Chizzy (country matters), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 02:19 (sixteen years ago)

I need to make one of these nights a Virgin Black night.

not taking the bait here L

They'd invariably be proud of that.
