blame canada!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked "it's all been done" a bit and if "brian wilson" was a dave matthews tune it would probably be my fave dave

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I like them better than DMB, I'll admit.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I am, unfortunately, from Scarborough (the shitty Toronto suburb from whence the BNL sprang, as well as Masetro Fresh Wes!). I had friends who were in the same classes with them at Woburn Collegiate (they were in this special "gifted" program) who took me to see them a few times. In those early days, they were more of a comedy act than a 'band' (playing with Corky and the Juice Pigs, etc). At the time, I thought they were actually quite funny and entertaining. Sadly, they never outgrew their style of humour, which grew tired as they carried on. I am still amazed to this day by their success.

Still, Steven Page has a great voice, and I have a tape of them doing cover songs which is quite good. Their version of The Smiths' "Still Ill" is truly great. *puts on rain slicker for protection from tomotoes and eggs*

And they are very nice guys, so I don't really hate them, I'm just hopelessly indifferent.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

er, that's "Maestro" Fresh Wes. The best thing Scarborough has produced musically, in my opinion, and THAT'S saying something about my beloved suburb.

and it seems i can't spell "tomatoes" either. my mind is currently struggling with mental images of what "tomotoes" might be...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to defend the conceept, not the band.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 5 December 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stunt"'s got some nice alterno-pop tunes on it. "In The Car". "When You Dream". "It's All Been Done". If they turned the ker-azyness down they'd actually be a good band.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

They have written many catchy, memorable songs.

They seem to LOVE what they are doing and don't seem to give a shit if they come off as whitebread, nerds, or popular. They know they're not hip but they don't care. I sort of like that, even if they are cloying.

don weiner, Friday, 5 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the few good bands to come out of the post-grunge style.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the few good bands to come out of the post-grunge style.

Oh Geir, I'm not even going to touch that.

Like Rob, I grew up in the GTA and, therefore, I have memories of the Bareneaked Ladies playing at the Courtice High School Dance. (Simon Provenzano, my Slayer-loving boyfriend at the time, was not impressed by BN in the least...he'd have a lot to say on this thread about how "Seasons in the Abyss" kicks ass and BN sucks ass)
Friends of mine are in their videos and I still have a copy of that old yellow indie demo tape release.

I agree with Rob--Steven Page's voice IS great and, in my opinion, "The Old Apartment" captures a bittersweet-I've-grown-up-and-I'm-happy-with-my-life-now-but-it-certainly-doesn't-stop-me-from-being-crazily-nostalgic feeling that you simply just don't come across in many pop songs.

cybele (cybele), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought "What A Good Boy" from their first album was a really nice song, probably their finest moment, but it's overshadowed by "Be My Yoko Ono", "If I Had A Million Dollars" and "Brian Wilson" on that same record. Hm, looking over those titles, it's hard to believe those goofs actually put a song as sad as "What A Good Boy" on that album.

Vic Funk, Friday, 5 December 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lovers iN A Dangerous Time" "Blame It On Me"

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lovers iN A Dangerous Time" - Is that the Bruce Cockburn song? I can hear BNL doing it...

There's no way they should have ever gotten as popular as they have - They're a bowling-alley bar band. But they've never actually killed anyone that I know, so they're OK, I guess.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The only song by them I've heard is "Call and Answer" and I think its great.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

um, i saw them a long time ago i think it was in 1995 in providence. there was 20 people there.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There need for some proper songwriting assistance kept the wonderful Stephen Duffy solvent during the '90s. Without them, we may never have had the last two Lilac Time albums or 'I Love My Friends'.

laticsmon (laticsmon), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, you either live in a cave or you're the most fortunate man in North America is you've never heard "One Week."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

is=if, natch

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

>I have memories of the Bareneaked Ladies playing at the Courtice High School Dance

I went out with a gal from Courtice High School! In the words of Stephen Wright: "It's a small world. But I wouldn't want to paint it."

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They sound like a Nerf version of XTC. Is that a defense?

Um, whenever I ask their fans why they like them, they usually say "they're really good musicians!" Which is such a relief, because then I know I have someone to give all my Steve Vai albums from middle school.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

They have an unassuming but perfect sense of pop/rock melodies and harmonies, much like Phantom Planet.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

one (moderately) cool thing about them was when they got "banned" from playing on city property, or something like that because of their name.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what's indefensible is asking for defenses of the barenaked ladies. i mean if there are any valid ones we don't want them spreading

ron (ron), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob, I think I know you.

cybele (cybele), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's quite possible. I do know a few people from the 'Shwa area. I'm sure we could do the GTA 6 degrees of separation quite easily...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

grand theft auto?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(greater toronto area)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a world in which the Barenaked Ladies are one of the few good bands to come out in the past 6-7 years.

They seem nice, have some okay tunes I guess.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Johnny. The whole GTA thing is bullshit anyway. We all know what "suburbs" are, and I came from the worst possible one. Before Scarborough was morphed into the GTA, it was officially the "City Of The Future", what with that crazy 70s-vision-of-the-future Civic Centre place. What a load of hooey.
(although it is kinda cool looking: http://www.mtarch.com/scc.html)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy - i've never seen that building before. i like.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, they used to take us on school trips there. I thought the place WAS the future when I was a kid. There's even an elevated monorail in Scarborough! I'm not kidding. Sounds cool but it's not. It was all downhill from there...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a serious love-hate relationship with "One Week" and "Pinch Me." I'll feel myself start to enjoy the wiggity-wackness of it all and then a line like "I could go but I'll just stay/ all my stuff's here anyway" comes out and I want to kill them. "It's All Been Done" was a fine fake XTC song.

Their new single about postcards with chimpanzees on them didn't move me. And I'll slap anyone who puts on "If I Had A Million Dollars" in my presence. Especially the live version. Bad freshman year of college memories.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally had a nasty argument with my b/f over this band the other night. He said "I like one of their songs" and I said "No you don't."

teeny (teeny), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob: did you ever work at Shift?

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 6 December 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally had a nasty argument with my b/f over this band the other night. He said "I like one of their songs" and I said "No you don't."

I now understand why Teeny isn't kidding when she makes it clear Mr. Teeny does what he is told. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

their songs are kinda catchy and cute and harmless. some of them, i mean. actually, i'm sort of embarassed about how much i liked them. even saw bnl live on conan o'brien. jesus christ, what was i thinking. oh yeah, one of them is sort of cute. har-har. ugh.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 6 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, which line bothers people the most from "One Week"?

My pick would be "vanilla is the finest of the flavors." But my favorite line is probably "Birchback Stadium, Home of the Robie."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

if jason priestly is a big fan it must be great.
are there people who buy it for the jokes?
the alternateen station in detroit/windsor was forced to play tons of bnl due to the canadian content law, ugh. probably better than the gandharvas though.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Canadian content law the reason that the Tragically Hip have been around so goddamn long? And why the Odds weren't shot on sight?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

to cybele - yes, i did! probably too late to post this anyway, but there ya go. so who are you then? email me off-thread if you like and we can play the name game! (my email address listed is real...)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 8 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Canadian content law the reason that the Tragically Hip have been around so goddamn long?

Probably, but that's okay because they turned into a much better band over time. Originally, they were just the worst--and they still turn out their fair amount of shit, too. But "Fireworks" and "Music @ Work" are pretty amazing songs.

And why the Odds weren't shot on sight?

The Odds could be very good, though--as well as pretty terrible. If you only know them by their videos, it makes sense that you'd want to shoot them (the videos themselves were always hellish, and they almost never chose their good songs as singles...in fact, they often chose some of their worst--"Heterosexual Man," for instance).

re: Barenaked Ladies: The Bruce Cockburn cover is their only reason for existing, but it's a damn good reason.

s woods, Monday, 8 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably discussed on some other thread but it's still worth posting again if that's the case.

one year passes...

The first four seconds of "The Old Apartment" always make me think I am about to hear STP's "Plush." It is a headfuck every time!

This is four-dimensional art; the 4th dimension is incredibly powerful. (Abbott), Sunday, 9 May 2010 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

I saw the Barenaked Ladies last year , and they were touring without Steven Page, who had just left.

Even though I had a free ticket, boy did that make a boring set even worse -- the keyboard player has the tinniest voice imaginable, and he was singing many of Page's songs.

Heroin Kills (Brad Nowell's Soiled Undergarments), Sunday, 9 May 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

My kid likes the "Snack Time" CD.

And I still like "Aluminum," mostly because of the voicings/harmonies in the chorus.

Dodo Lurker (Slim and Slam), Monday, 10 May 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

i still can't successfully sing along to the chorus of 'pinch me.' seriously it's pretty hard. the album version of that track also has a backwards guitar thing going on in it at the end iirc
