500 Greatest Extreme/Noise Albums Of All Time!

Cuz that rolling stone list WAS really boring. this should be more interesting.this is also inspired by that power violence thread and a bunnybrains cd i am listening to. i don't care how you define extreme or noise. it should just be something that makes you go ouch or whooooboy! ideally, it should also be something that you actually like and enjoy or at least something that you are impressed by or that makes your jaw drop. all genres welcome. i'm hoping to get a long list of things i can buy someday when i'm rich. has anyone ever written an extreme music buying guide? maybe i should. that might be fun. and deafening! so, go to town, noiseheads!

i'm starting small(numbers don't reflect greatness-have to start somewhere)

1)Discordance Axis-The inalienable dreamless (i love this album. i have to get a copy of that early years comp.)
2)Bunnybrains-Live in New Heaven,2001 (this is just great noise of the bashing and flailing variety. and surprisingly noisy even for the bunnybrains. it's great! and i listened to years of bad bunnybrain noise so i know the difference. find the thread on ilm where my brother offers up free copies. just send him your address. am i pimping for him? nah, he is revered in japan and belgium, he doesn't need me to pimp for him. i should mention that when i saw him over thanksgiving he had a two live rabbits and a duck in the back of his car. maybe don't send him your address after all)

3. Khanate - 'Khanate'. Um, technical doom taken to new extremes of agonising slowness by (ex)members of OLD, Burning Witch, Blind Idiot God etc. I would write more but I'm going to go to lunch instead

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that album too. and the louder you play it the better(and scarier)it sounds. i remember seeing old when they were old lady drivers opening for the young gods years ago and i kept thinking:"How did they arrive at that sound?" it was ugly and cool and just so....i dunno, weird.

scott seward, Friday, 5 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

merzbow- rainbow electronics

gaz (gaz), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

17. Earth - Earth 2
18. Keiji Haino - Execration That Accept To Acknowledge

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

19)Cephalic Carnage-Lucid Interval (this album has really grown on me. i like the way they mix things up from track to track. the electronics on it were done by some guy from happy pappy. has anyone ever heard happy pappy?)
20)Converge-Jane Doe (this album is heavy and noisy enough to make a list like this i suppose, but what i like about it is how EMOTIONALLY extreme it is. i think it's a beautiful album. i called them an emo band on ilm somewhere and someone got mad at me. i refuse to call them screamo. emotional extremes are a valid criteria too. if someone were to list scott walker's Tilt it would fit)

i'm hoping some jazznoiseheads will pitch in on here.

27. whitehouse - great white death
28. whitehouse - right to kill
29. skullflower - xaman

brock (brock), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Skullflower - Xaman -- the sound of brain erupting through skull.

Iannis Xenakis - Bohor I -- funny how electronically manipulated rattling jewelry can sound like dying, screaming human beings. Extreme because it makes you realize how easily suggestible those sorts of descriptions actually are, how strenuously we try to find recognizable patterns in seeming chaos.

Clarke B., Friday, 5 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

scott seward, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

toby (tsg20), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

45. Fat - Hit

Guitars + drums + samplers and made with the help of the Borbetomagus fellers. Granted it's not a noise riot all the way through, but the opener is as powerful as any Last Exit.

RE: To Live And Shave - Not common knowledge to me! Someone gave me that cd and i just wrote down what was on the cover for the purposes of this list. Thanks for the info!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 9 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott - the TLASILA radio session dated from October 22, 1999, and was broadcast live over WNUR-FM, Chicago. The "Kill Misty" album is identical to the WNUR broadcast, apart from some editing and digital equalization done after the fact. The line-up is identical, but the song titles (which were announced over the air by Tom Smith) were changed for the bootleg, and all between song announcements were deleted. TLASILA 2 did their best to cover their tracks, but in the end too many people had heard the broadcast, and put 2+2 together. I have both the WNUR session and the "Misty" boot, and they are one and the same. TLASILA 2 was a scam group, although a pretty funny one!

as long as to live & shave in la is a topic of conversation, i'd like to nominate their 1st album, '30-minuten mannercreme', and their last (before reforming), 'the wigmaker'. both are amazing, unlike anything before or since, as unique as merzbow, whitehouse, scott walker, jandek, xenakis, anyone. very cool and important music.

sindra st. clair, Saturday, 10 April 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the highlight of my trip to nova scotia last summer was finding a copy of TL&SILA's helen butte vs. masonna pussy badsmell in a dollar bin.

new noise releases that have tickled my fancy:
-prurient/kites split LP
-hair police - rattler's echo
-burning star core tape on chondritic sound
-dead machines - plays the night shift
-ceylon mange tape on since 72 (holy shit; where do i get more of this stuff??? totally amazing.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"the highlight of my trip to nova scotia last summer was finding a copy of TL&SILA's helen butte vs. masonna pussy badsmell in a dollar bin."

awesome! that's a crazy album, tho imho not as intense or bracing (or exploratory) as 'wig'.

great list you've given us. who exactly are ceylon mange, btw? isn't that a side project of the decaer pinga loons?

sindra

sindra st. clair, Saturday, 10 April 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to say ceylon mange is somehow related to dylan nyoukis/decaer pinga... i think ILX's very own roger adultery has played with them??

Surfer Rosa?

Also recommended: My Name is Rah Rah s/t, Lord of the Yum Yum, 25 Suave's I Love Detroit... I am glad that the Lord of the Rings Modulator made it on there, as it's about my favorite noise album ever.

today at work, my boss and his partner found a charlemagne palestine double LP in a box in the basement. Four Manifestations on Six Elements. I wish i had cash for things like that. I'm pretty sure they're gonna ebay it. sigh.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 28 January 2006 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

also, at work I listened to the Meerk Puffy LP. It's pretty good! I went outside to smoke and came back and the locked groove was playing. funny.

Oh hey! I'm just discovering the wonderful world of ILX. This thread has been dormant for a while, and I confess I haven't read it all yet. Anyone in there a Merzbow fan? I have the Merzbox, and it is monumental!

Darren Skuja (Darren Skuja), Thursday, 23 November 2006 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

But, in specifically answering the question, Merzbow - Akasha Gulva.

Darren Skuja (Darren Skuja), Thursday, 23 November 2006 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Thursday, 23 November 2006 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks fetchboy.

Mister, it appears to be a concentrated noisehead discussion area. It's going to take me a while to figure out ILX.....any discussion concentrated on Merzbow or the Mmerzbox in there?

Cheers.

Darren Skuja (Darren Skuja), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

"concentrated noisehead discussion area"...?

not really. it seems to be the dank basement where the ilx mods sequester the deformed cousins.

Merzbow threads

Onimo has bone for the pink overload! (GerryNemo), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

it has little to do with being sequestered and much more to do with a general distaste for standard ILX bullshit. (insert uk/isle of faggotry joke here.) xp

CROWS don't FLY in STRAIGHT LINES (orion), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's now 'Fagtron Nation'

CROWS don't FLY in STRAIGHT LINES (orion), Thursday, 23 November 2006 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

I hope scott hasn't given up his dreams of turning this thread into a book yet

one idea is to start another thread, and invite people who contributed to this thread to re-post short descriptions of the albums contributed

sort of want to do that to the 'top 100 ambient albums' thread as well

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 23 November 2006 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

was that idea ever made into a thread?

Sick Things - Sounds of Silence. The Australian band whose members would go on to Fungus Brains, Venom P Stinger, and the Dirty Three. Massive, if maybe unintentional, distortion. Not too hard to find online.

Michael Train, Saturday, 15 March 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but that leaves around 391 that are pretty difficult I'd wager.

I know, right?, Sunday, 16 March 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

i lost my copy of joe colley - desperate attempts at beauty. ;_; what a thing. he's kind of a hardcore analog sound artist type, lots of metal balls in speaker cones and elaborate feedback vs. natural processes vs. physical space conceptual pieces but they SOUND UNNNBELIEVABLE. 'desperate attempts' has a lot of field recordings in there too, ice cracking in water mostly? anyway, it's really nerve-wracking and controlled. 'untitled piece for prepared chord organ, microphones, and electronic motors' is more ethereal but just as alien as is 'anthem: static for empty life." don't be put off by the titles! those last two are some of the best "ambient" i've ever heard, super super super dense and warm.

i know drumm has already been mentioned, but he really is fantastic. 'impish tyrant' is my fav. raw raw raw raw raw raw raw. and riffs!
