songs that aren't xmas songs but would fit on a xmas mix anyway

i've been working on my annual xmas cd-r and, in listening to black tambourine, decided that the song "black car" might actually fit because i think it sounds carol-esque. i've also included mercury rev's "endlessly" for the obvious 'silent night' interlude.

i'm also interested in traditional or non-traditional songs done by more recent artists such as the cranes' "christmas angel" and joan jett's "the little drummer boy."

Beck has a song called "The Little Drum Machine Boy," but aside from the awesome title I don't know what it has to do with Christmas.

A lot of the Aisler's Set songs would work - especially "Catherine Says" and "Emotional Levy."

They have one called "Christmas Song" too, which is pretty Christmas-y, obviously.

Actually, I just listened to it, and somehow "Christmas Song" is far less Christmas-y than the other two that I mentioned.

"december" by the trouble dolls, a brooklyn (sort of via australia) band that, as conflict-of-interest rules require me to point out, may be closely related to fact checking cuz.

Beach Boys: Surf's Up
Tom Waits: Good Old World (Waltz) - it sounds like "O Tannenbaum"
Tom Waits: In The Neighbourhood - sounds like "Come All Ye Faithful"
Aphex Twin: Goon Goompas
Certain bits off of Plaid's Restproof Clockwork sound quite christmassy to me.

Tori Amos has done great versions of "Little Drummer Boy" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas".

The Gary Jules cover of "Mad World" always makes me feel a bit Christmassy for no reason at all, as does "Forever And A Night" by Girls Aloud.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"December" by Unwound, kind of prog-y and bleak
"Dead by Christmas" by Hanoi Rocks, classic glam

Not meaning to sound negative about the season; the Hanoi track is actually quite upbeat!

"Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen" from Agaetis Byryriagancheese is prob the most Christmas-ey song I know that isn't a Christmas song. Although, they're from Iceland, where its always Christmas, so maybe it doesn't count.

TomB (TomB), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I always found 'Everybody's Happy Nowadays' by Buzzcocks to be very Xmussy for some reason.

F. Anthony O'Reilly (Ferg), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Check out a number of songs from Cocteau Twins' Treasure.

David A. (Davant), Friday, 5 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

cocteau twins also did 'winter wonderland' and 'frosty the snowman' on their 'snow' single. i can't believe i didn't think of sigur ros and tom waits.

and tom has to have done a straight-up holiday song somewhere along the way.

rainman, Friday, 5 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

tom waits' "a sight for sore eyes" has always seemed holiday-ish to me, probably because it borrows heavily from "auld lang syne." there's also "xmas card from a hooker in minneapolis."

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

my sister and i are working on a "punk and techno X-mas" EP right now that we're giving as early christmas gifts to friends and family to help promote the holiday cheer.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Nina Simone, "Little Girl Blue" (with the "Good King Wenceslas" arrangement)

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 5 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Baby It's Cold Outside" (best version is by Margaret Whiting)
"Hammond Song" (Roaches)

Burr (Burr), Saturday, 6 December 2003 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Young's "Love Of The Common People" to thread.

Also, Chris DeBurgh's "A Spacemen Came Travelling" (surprisingly decent for a CdB track btw) isn't really stricktly a Christmas song, is it? But anyway it is included on a zillion Christmas compilations.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 6 December 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

an angelic Enya instrumental, maybe

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 7 December 2003 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also the Smashing Pumpkins' "Christmastime" for an actual Christmas song

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 7 December 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The better portion of Vespertine would snuggle up comfy-like on a Xmas playlist. "An Echo, A Stain" is like "Russian Christmas Hymn."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 7 December 2003 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

gorky's 'christmas eve', at least i don't think it's meant to be a christmas song.
pearlfishers 'strawberries in the snow'

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 7 December 2003 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Depeche Mode's "Christmas Island" isn't meant to be a Christmas Song, neither does it sound like one.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 7 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get it. Why all these X-mas threads all of a sudden? Oh, wait...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 7 December 2003 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

keith m - does "Christmas Eve" = "Hwiangerdd Mair"? Or are they two different songs?

I nominate the VU and "Sunday Morning".

Schwingung (Damian), Sunday, 7 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon and Garfunkel - "Hazy Shade of Winter"

Ben Dot (1977), Sunday, 7 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

de la soul's simply should be compulsory listening at any self-respecting christmas party -- or any party whatsoever, for that matter.

if it's a more downbeat mix, try stafraenn hakon's echo-layered cover of last christmas (mp3). i would give anything to hear that song played in a cathedral on christmas eve.

dan jonze, Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

My Xmas CD has some dancehall and some hip hop on it, neither of which are Christmassy at all. Except "Xmas In Holis" by Run DMC, which kickstarts the mix. It also has Keith emerson murdering "Troika". Yeah!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Nat King Cole in Espanol works surprisingly well as holiday season mood music.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the gorky's song 'christmas eve' is on 'spanish dance troupe', mainly instrumental until there is a bit of singing about the stars and christmas eve near the end.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"man from manhattan" by sir lord baltimore, 'cause it's about jesus
