Ashanti, Charli Baltimore, Fatal, Ja Rule - "Rain On Me (Remix)"

when I first heard the original, I was pissed at Irv for desecrating the memory of "Can I Live", easily the best track he's ever had a hand in, and the song turned out to be more terrible every time I heard it. but this remix is kind of nice! the Inc.'s MCs don't deliver, of course, and the intro milks the old Jay track some more, but the chorus melody is switched up nice and the beat's been improved a little, aside from Irv's usual horrible windchimes and atmospheric wooshes.

more R Kelly-esque euphemisms...

you hate windchimes and atmospheric wooshes = you hate the humans soul.

a lot of inc. productions hold up better over time than their rough contemporaries, i find.

I'm a sucker; I like the original. :(

Haven't heard the remix though.

I hate windchimes in my neighborhood. Why do I like them in songs?

i don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. but, say, toya's "i do" (which i will love til the end of time) very much sounds "2001" whereas "i'm real (remix)" sounds like it could have been released in 2001, 2003, 1993...

(I wanted to make a CDR beginning with Fallen and ending with Rain on Me. It would've been too depressing, going from happy stuff to super-depressing stuff.)

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes I HAVE LOST IT

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man don't make me start a thread about JE. the other day I heard "Walked Outta Heaven" and the new Bow Wow song in a row and got all choked up.

anyway, I'm no Inc. hater (although I'm not sure they'll ever top "Put It On Me"). but really, I think there are better expressions of the human soul than windchimes!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 5 December 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

if i had any guts "walked out of heaven" would be in my top 10 this year

I do think "I'm Real (Remix)" represented some kind of peak for the Murder Inc aesthetic - perhaps it was the flight from edginess to MOR conservatism that was exciting, not the departure or destination.

Ooh don't forget "Down 4 U" either! Whatever happened to Vita ?

I openly admit my sin for buying that first Ashantay album for "Happy" alone (it was good for "Rescue"!), but everytime I tried to sell it back no one would take it, until i just wound up donating it to Ameoba (an act of dubious charity)... I feel bad for the ill-fate of her X-mas album. Actually no i don't =)

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 6 December 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah "Rescue" and "Voodoo" were really fantastic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 6 December 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there anything like those on the new one? "Aww Baby" really turned me off and made me want to gouge her eyes out, but maybe i'd like some of it..hell i even liked "Movies." A little.
