Looking for Roc.a.fella / Wu-tang type soul

not necessarily the actual stuff they've sampled (i guess that's not bad either) but stuff that sounds like it. real moody stuff with strings i guess.

some stuff that i have that i've been digging lately:

William Bell "I Forget To Be Your Lover" - i've been listening to this song nonstop for days now. it was sampled on Dilated People's "Worse Comes to Worst"

Syl Johnson's "Is it because I'm Black?"

Ann Peebles "I Can't Stand the Rain" - great album. sounds like female al green

and totally obvious, al green

i guess from my selections it looks like i'm looking for southern soul stuff, maybe stuff on Hi and Stax? other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if I'm totally understanding you, but "Is It Because I'm Black" was sampled by the Wu - see "Hollow Bones" off of The W.

i'm just looking for soul that sounds like the kinda stuff they've sampled

(even if it was or wasn't sampled by them, just that sound)

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

theres an album(possibly two actually) called shaolin soul which is compiled by rza, featuring loads of the tracks he sampled

robin (robin), Friday, 5 December 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a heap of this stuff, JaXoN. Will post some suggestions when I get home.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 6 December 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i went out and picked up a 2cd Hi Records best of called "Rivertown Blues, The R'n'B Sessions & the Soul Years". unfortunately, all i really wanted to hear on it were the soul years and those are only maybe a quarter of the songs. the rest is just too early and bleh (to me at least, i'm more into 70s stuff).

there are some really amazing tracks. an al green number i've never heard "Strong as Death (Sweet as Love)" and two amazing George Jackson tracks. especially "Aretha, Sing One for Me" that was sampled for Ghostface's "Child's Play" (one of my favorite of his tracks. if anything, it'll give me a starting point on my journey to finding some of the artists i'm looking for.

and adam, i'd love to hear what you have

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 6 December 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the ace Philly-sounding sample on "Girls, Girls, Girls"?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 6 December 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to know what that sample was from as well...
Some example Wu-Tang sampling in 'The W'...

Tom May (Tom May), Saturday, 6 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay...

Yeah, raid Al Green's back catalogue. "The Flipside of Al Green" is an excellent collection of rarities and b-sides that have been/should be sampled. Listen to Curtis Mayfield's "Right On For Darkness" too.

The Stax Gold CD (or any late 1960s/early 1970s Stax) is fookin' amazing for this stuff, too.

Listen to pretty much anything by The Dramatics.

Seek any Baby Huey, especially "Hard Times', which will blow you away if you haven't heard it. Biggie Smalls samples on "Gimme The Loot", I think. oops, I forgot you want Wu-Tang type stuff, but still...

Blinky's "Hunter Gets Captured By The Game".

I guess Isaac Hayes pretty much owns this thread.

You could try David Axelrod, too, but I guess that's more Dre than Wu Tang.

what was the ace Philly-sounding sample on "Girls, Girls, Girls"?

I don't know about the regular single version, but the music from the remix at the end of the Blueprint is The Persuaders "Trying Girls Out," and that song is fantastic.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 6 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay... the sample from Jay-Z's radio mix of "Girls, Girls, Girls" is Tom Brock ("I love You More & More"). All the string loops and groove is ripped off from this rare soul nugget.

Any more samples you be wanting... just let me know there?!

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I've got a question - what is the song which is sampled for the remix version of Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day"? You know, the really happy sounding version of the song with the great string sample.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

great suggestions, thanks adam

i guess i'm asking this because most of the soul i have is either rock based, funk based, motown-y, or disco-y. i have most of the well known axelrods & that baby huey. i've just never gotten into the southern soul stuff.

there's a copy of al green's record "call me", a two-fer of syl johnson's albums and a willie hutch record at the store i was just at. think i'm gonna go pick them up. not sure about the hutch, but probably.

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

man i just picked up that Syl Johnson two-fer. "Total Explosion" (75) is AMAZING! and "Uptown Shakedown" (78) is just good. it's crazy to hear the difference in the sound that 3yrs makes. the later album is more upbeat, definitely disco influenced. and both of these albums were $8.99. green's 'call me' is a classic without question.

does anyone know anything about Willie Hutch. i'm thinking that it's just going to be blaxploitation chicka chicka bow bow.

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 7 December 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I just downloaded "I Hate I Walked Away" by Syl Johnson. It's like the greatest song in the world. That is all.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 7 December 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the song which is sampled for the remix version of Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day"? You know, the really happy sounding version of the song with the great string sample. -- Matthew Perpetua (fluxequalsra...), December 6th, 2003.

Matthew: "It Was A Good Day" revolves around samples of Parliament's "Sir Nose D'Voidofunk"; The Moments "Come On Sexy Mama" (1974) - but the *remix* seems to loop and speed up the vocals from The Isley Brothers' "Footsteps In the Dark" (1977 album "Go For Your Guns" if you're checking the album it's from?)

Hope that helps?

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Sunday, 7 December 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks! I'll try to find that.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 7 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

while we're at it,whats the song on the w that sounds a bit like hit em up by blue cantrell?
the swingy jazzy thing
any idea where that sample comes from?

robin (robin), Monday, 8 December 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Which track do you mean? "One Blood Under W" or "Do You Really..". They both seem to have a jazzy lilt!

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Monday, 8 December 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wanna say how funny it is that the sample for "Can it All Be So Simple" is from a cover of Barbara Streisand's "Memories"

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
ok this is driving me mental: does anyone know what the main part of lil kim's "came back for you" is sampled from?
