How many types of rock are there? I have a feeling there are 47, but I could only name 8.

1) punk rock 2) glam rock 3) garage rock 4) kraut rock 5) math rock 6) indie rock 7) alternative rock 8) drone rock

fritz, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, and how many metals are there? the must be more than:

1) (your basic)heavy

2) black metal

3) death metal

4) speed metal

fritz, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thrash metal, for one thing. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grunge, shoe-gazer, psychadelic, freedom, classic, cock, folk, blues, jazz, progressive, new romantics, new wave, no wave...

And, of course, some would argue there are only two kinds: bad and good. Bad being anything you don't like, good being everything you do.

Prude, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine once came up with over a hundred types of hardcore punk. Most hardcore punk is only barely rock so maybe they shouldn't count. I could probably come up with over 20 kinds of metal pretty easily, but most would have very little to do with actual rock music.

Kris, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sludge/grind is rock! It's the only form of rock if you ask me! Well, almost.

Also, can anyone tell me the origin of the excellent term 'pronk'?

dave q, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well there's cuntry and western.

Geoff, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No mention of buttrock yet?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't the term Post Rock an oxymoron of sorts?

Ronan, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually I just thought about that and no its not.

Ronan, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remember 'pigfuck'?

dave q, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, there's "Please Mr Postman" and "The Letter" for starters.

MarkH, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First vol my autobiog = In Memoriam: Pigfuck Days

mark s, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark H, you forgot "Return to Sender"

dave q, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Acid Rock. Is Space Rock the same as Drone Rock?

What is the difference between indie rock and alternative rock?

Nick, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only saw Space Rock used for Spiritualized. Can't we just abandon all these labels and just say music is music? (man)

Ronan, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i saw space rock also used for (the very cool) Grimble Grumble once. as for labels, i like em, and i have never believed music is just music.

gareth, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are we not counting rock'n'roll and rockabilly 'cos they don't end in rock?

Andrew L, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, because then we'd have to include Rock Hudson.

Nick, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still no Dad Rock? So Dad Rock, although some people would say that's the same as rock, period. ;)

Omar, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Space Rock and Drone Rock are *not* the same thing. In order to be proper spacerock, you have to write songs about Space. (The concept, not the band. Hence the Liverpuddlians do not count.) Hence bands like Spiritualized (Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In...) and Hawkwind are spacerock as opposed to mere dronerock. Dronerock which is German is called Krautrock. Dronerock which is from Chicago and exceptionally boring is called Postrock. So now you know.

I hate labels and pidgeonholes. Unless, of course you are talking about dronepop and spacerock, in which case, I will split hairs while dancing with 22 angels on the head of a pin.

exile on krumkill rd, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Speaking of splitting hairs...

Only terms ending with -rock count, so I've exempted: shoegazer, new romantic, new wave, no wave, sludge/grind, pigfuck and cuntry & western on the grounds that these terms are used independently of the -rock suffix (or if they are used with rock they sound dorky & odd eg "new wave rock").

So far we have 22 rocks and 5 metals.

Rock: punk,glam,garage,kraut,math,indie,alt,drone,grunge,psychedelic, freedom,classic,cock,folk,blues,jazz,prog,butt,post,acid,space&dad.

Metal: heavy,black,death,speed&thrash.

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

23. skronkrock

24. afrorock

25. southern rock

26. boogie rock

27. funk rock

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Props to the guy who invented the most excellent term "Hard Rockin' Shit"

dave q, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fritz, you don't seem to have included 'nu-metal'. What is freedom rock?

Nick, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

28. art rock

29. soft rock

30. hard rock

31. roots rock

(I don't know what freedom rock is, but I like it)

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(Nick: don't know about indie/alt now, but circa '92 it meant:

indie rock = released on an independent label;

alternative rock = the same band's 2nd release, now on Geffen

{same band's third album, see "indie rock"})

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Poodle rock (=soft rock but better name)

Nick, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Soft metal? False metal (as in that metal you just say no to)?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trainer rock. Competing name for dad rock in the NME. Kind of died out. Moronic indiesnob implications of 'indie music for people who wear trainers rather than proper indie shoes' or something.

Nick, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"freedom rock"= Frank Black song about a snobbish indie rocker.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beard Rock, that's definitely a genre.

duane, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

frat rock

surf rock

christian rock

fritz, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, I think the term Freedom Rock comes from a late 80s TV-only American compilation record. Probably where Frank Black got the idea. It's basically Butt Rock, if I recall correctly. The ad had a couple of stoners sitting around grooving to B.T.O or something..."Hey, is that Freedom Rock?" "Yeah!" "Well, turn it up, man!" Does anyone else remember this?

Arthur, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lovers rock. But I don't really know what it is. A Sade album, I got that. But originally some type of reggae, right?

Arthur, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stool rock.

Scientist rock.

'Pronk' is a cross between punk and prog, I believe Sean Organ used it to describe Rothko.

emil.y, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't Sean coin that for Cardiacs?

berbis, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rock n' Roll. That's all.

DavidM, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuzzrock

metalcore falls under two listings.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is the difference between indie rock and alternative rock?

Great as Fritz's answer was, I'd put it this way:

Person, 1991: "I like alternative rock, especially Superchunk and Tsunami."

Everyone else, 1993: "Hey, we like alternative rock, too. Especially Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots."

Person 1, 1994: "Actually, I think what I like is called something else."

Whence indie.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nitsuh, maybe that's a US thing. Over here 'indie' has always (like since the early 80s anyway) been a common term. 'Alternative music ' (and its bastard offspring alt.rock) always sounded American to me.

Nick, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

both indie & alt were once simply "college rock" (around here, anyway)

fritz, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two more - craprock and wussrock as defined by Homer and Bart Simpson when Marge was going through tapes of Pablo Cruise and America while shopping.

Damian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
