the Moss Icon CD

So I procrastinated long enough and got the Moss Icon CD and am loving it. "Lyburnum". But it has extra tracks. But the liner notes tell you absolutely nothing about where they are and what they are from. www.allmusic.com sadly lists the CD as a 1997 and leaves it at that.. no review there.

Can someone with more knowledge than me break down the sources of the CD track listing?

fuck...i havent listened to this in forever. let me see if i can dig out the old records (if they didnt go in the big sale, that is) and see if i can piece it together.

haha as i remember, i was supposed to review the moss icon cd for amg before i quit.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 December 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i know the first 7" (88?) was something like:

hate in me / what they lack / i'm back, sleeping or fucking or something / kiss the girls and make them die

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 December 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

god look at those song titles...no wonder they fuckin invented emo!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's from the actual Vermiform LP, "Lyburnum" and the split LP with Silver Bearings, i think.

i will dblchk later.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 6 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The logical result of hardcore taking itself seriously. Rorschach are equally embarrassing if you're into this kind of thing.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Saturday, 6 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ur, well embarrassing or not, for 1988, Moss Icon were pretty fucking ferocious. (and conveniently timed for a certain project i'm working on) More than you could say about Rites Of Spring, certainly. (I like Rites a lot too, but seriously, they sound less furious than the Lemonheads at the time)

The embarrassment, as far as "emo" goes, started when bands pretended to be serious but were so transparently not serious, but had foxy lead singers so it was ok to swoon over them. (i.e. Spanakorzo, for example, were the first "emo" band I saw live that left me feeling empty afterwards.)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(weeeelll, maybe not as embarrassing as much as just plain sucking, for the latter part there)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT... (self refuting here), to what degree were the Rites and the Moss possibly pretending as well?.. if we're already going to get all accusatory about this shit.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe not as embarrassing as much as just plain sucking

What did you expect with a name like SPANAKORZO? Sounds like an American attempt to mass market a Greek dish to the masses.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Try the Spanakorzo with a leetle lemon jooz... eez good, eh?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Toast and jam!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Depeskis Moudis "Mousakka For The Masses"

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them back in the early 80s. I cried, and they rocked so hard. They broke up and members went on to form Dolma and Saganaki Karkass who were were also fucking rocking too. And then they broke up.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And you cried again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also reminds me when I saw Constantine Sankahti, who then moved on to become Tristeza.

(One of the two statements above is a lie and a truth. Guess which one)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Constantine Sankathi didn't become Tristeza, did they? They became Agna Moraine's Autobiography! And the singer sang on a Deadwood Divine track.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 6 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Though now I'm hardpressed to think of who DID become Tristeza, who are really boring. Clikitat Ikatowi, maybe?

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the drummer from clikitat went on to be in black heart procession didnt he? and didnt the singer go on to one of those ill-advised glam-goth bands? the get hustle? or was that antioch arrow?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the drummer was in black heart procession initially, but i don't think he is anymore.

i never paid attention to get hustle.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

easily one of the worst shows i've ever seen.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 6 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Constantine Sankathi didn't become Tristeza, did they? They became Agna Moraine's Autobiography! And the singer sang on a Deadwood Divine track.

Wait, you mean you're not joking about these names.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

No joke--pretty bad, eh? Some were WORSE!

ian j0jnhonssdjfhjdk1``, Sunday, 7 December 2003 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian, i know one of the guys who was in Constantine Sankahti did go on to Tristeza for sure.. the bigger guy with the sideburns.. (Christopher?).

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, many San Diego musicians discovered Leonard Cohen or the Chamelons all at the same time or something because many hardcore musicians there then formed pretty and/or low-key bands.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

All of 'em idiots but Monica. The drummer was at least a friendly, trustworthy idiot.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

?????

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(ouch)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 December 2003 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(The Moss Icon people, I mean. Second guitarist added later may also not be an idiot, I don't know.)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 8 December 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

offtopic (although "the life" is my POO moss icon choice):

I will stand up for Spanakorzo and will try to remain relatively objective/unbiased here. the first single and split with swing kids (that's an emo law, right?: the first single and/or the first split are the only relevant releases) were very unifying to the largest components of the 90-92 san diego emo scene (namely the inland faction vs. the beach punks... real/imagined class warfare... typical socal zipcode segregation). early/mid career shows at world beat center and the che were well attended and enjoyed by myself and my friends.

five months pass...
Does anyone else think the vocals on some Moss Icon are SO MUCH like freaking Monster Movie by Can?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to have a few mp3s like 2 years because I basically used Audiogalaxy to download every Gravity Records or San Diego band ever. I need to get somme TMP and Clikitat crap.

best moss icon song = kick the can

xpost-
but hey, lync is a good band.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, 24kbps

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

this reminds me of the band I want to start that records onto an answering machine which is then recorded into my computer from the other room via a cheap microphone at an absurdly low bit rate.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I've heard Jon's solo stuff recently, and it's great. So I only stand by my assertion of "idiots" with regard to Tonie and Mark (and Mark was always a nice person).
