listening to Mars' "Helen Forsdale" from No New York right now and it is sublime. probably pretty close to being one my favorite bands from the late 70's -- especially bands from NYC.

I've only heard the NNY tracks, liked them, and meant to get the 78+ compilation disc that Mr. Foetus threw together (yet, I never have).

Not something I'd listen to on a regular basis, mind you...but yes, classic.

There's another Mars CD that just came out that's all the studio recordings in the band's original preferred mixes (rather than the weird alt. mixes and live takes from 78/78+). There's also a live album (conveniently called "Mars Live") which came out on Les Disques du Soleil et de l'Acier sometime in the mid-'90s. I'd say go for the new comp first... I want to be in a band like that. Badly.

ha, douglas, now that you live in my city we should form one. ;-)

just ordered the new Mars preferred mix thing. whats the sound like on the Mars Lives one?

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 7 December 2003 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

mars - classic. making that new collection limited edition - total fucking dud.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 7 December 2003 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, did those cool guys make it limited edition? screw them, I'll GLADLY hang on the 78+ CD I bought used for like $4, thank you very much.

Jack, the sound on the Disques du Soleil Live cd is HORRENDOUS, if you must know. Not really worth the effort of tracking down. Email me if you want a burn of it (I'm finally on top of the trades I owe other people - hurray!)

Also, the John Gavanti lp totally slays everything. I think I like it better than the stuff under the Mars name. It's just completely warped and fucked up in a beautiful way..

I always thought "Helen Forsdale" was the catchiest song on *No New York,* even though they're probably the band on there that people remember least. *78+* is as good as Teenage Jesus and the Jerks'
*Everything,* and WAY better than anything Black Dice will ever do. I used to think *John Gavanti* was unlistenable, but I stumbled across a $3 copy of the CD at Kim's on St Marks two months ago, and it was way better than I'd remembered it being. So yeah, get that one too.

I got most all of my no wave on slsk. I'm not paying the asked prices on any record, even if they are as fine as these. fuck 'em!

'helen...' and the first track from james chance and the contortions are the two best cuts on no new york.

john gavanti is interesting bcz that is the one no wave alb I've heard which i found quite tough going as far as the vocals were concerned. but i liked the arrangements on that.

78 is a record you can't go wrong with and I still have to hear that live album. That with 'everything' and the DNA 'last live at CBGB's' are the best post no new york records that the bands involved made that i've heard (james chance were really too patchy post no new york, I think frank kogan said as much and i have to agree though like i said i haven't heard everything)

can we not mention black dice on this thread anymore please. its upsetting.

''I want to be in a band like that. Badly''

I was listening to Ut's 'conviction' today and i had similar thoughts.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 8 December 2003 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So does it sound better?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 December 2003 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

I guess it does sound better.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

It does sound better, I agree!

But...

I feel moderately guilty: the most exciting thing (for me) about following the above link was learning via Xgau's review that there's a new Dandy Warhols album coming out in a few days. Oof.

Good album, that Dandys one. I'll have a review in the OC Weekly next week.

(Alerted to the presence of this via an email that began "Boston Indie Quartet Mars Release New Classic Rock-Indebted EP")
