I've been hearing a lot of talk about them lately
I have heard a few goos songs but have no idea of the names.

The first one, Real Life is a good place to start, and the next two, Secondhand Daylight, and The Correct Use of Soap (I think these are #2 and 3, anyway) are also good. I'm not familiar with any other of their LPs, or know if they have a compilation out.

There is an fairly comprehensive greatest hits album "Where the Power IS". Real Life is a fab album.Secondhand Daylight is a bit heavy on the keyboards for me.The Correct Use of Soap has a very thin guitar oriented sound & lyrically focuses on relationships. All 3 are excellent examples of a band using production & arrangement skills to recreate themselves from album to album.

I'm afraid I am unable to suggest an album to you in this manner, but you might do well to check out Rolling Stone, as they have published their Top 500 albums and this may provide some starting points.

You need to buy all of their albums really, since they're all so different, but all so wonderful. 'Real Life' is their most punk (but with tons of proggy keyboards), 'Secondhand Dayligh't is more atmospheric and goth (with bass more upfront now), 'Correct Use of Soap' is more new wave and funky (my favorite album of all time, coincidentally), and 'Magic, Murder and the Weather' is more synth-pop--a very weird album, very underrated. I don't think getting a best-of does the band justice. They're definitely an album band.

If you search for Magazine you should find a thread about them.

Rays And Hail is a superb Magazine compilation - of all the 'greatest hits'-type dealeys that I own, it's definitely one of the best. It inspired me to go out and buy Secondhand Daylight, which is a grower.

yeah, buy all the original albums, all four of them -- sorry they don't have all the singles though, so you may want to hear them on the greatest hits compilations -- and the live album Play is very good too, better than most live albums usually are

the bands great genius is that they knew when to shut up, so there are some very funky songs and some very heavy songs, sometimes all at the same time, but there are no awful extended 12" mixes (uh, except one song they covered) -- the band is very good at being big and small at the same time, concise

oh, and they pioneered a very heavy synth and bass sound that is both funk and rock integrated within a "rock band" format, cf: today, where so many bands that use synths are just synth bands

and then there are the lyrics, which are interesting and thought provoking

You might be better off starting with the Rays & Hail greatest hits comp first, as it gives you a good enough overview of their stuff. And then get Scree for all the other singles, B-sides, and what have you. Then go to the records.. if comps are not allowed, then Correct Use Of Soap is a good one to start with, then work backwards from there.

As much as I love Magazine, I find Magazine lyrics as gauche and often crap as the band are great.

1) Where The Power Is
2=) Real Life
2-) The Correct Use Of Soap
4) Secondhand Daylight
5) Maybe It's Right To Be Nervous Now
6) Play
7) Magic Murder & The Weather

'Rays and Hail' was the first Magazine thing I owned, it is a good starter.

Andy Kellman to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 December 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Me to thread!

You have to get everything, but to start with get Real Life, Secondhand Daylight and Correct Use.... then play in that order. You'll never recover.

I don't know the comps/best ofs, so I don't know if this is on it anywhere, but the 7" of Rhythm of Cruetly is very different then the mix on Secondhand Daylight, and much better. Or maybe I just think that because I heard the single first.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 8 December 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that version can be found on 'Scree'.
