Aphex seems to be consistantly great, but is all the other stuff on Rephlex just aphex imitation, at one point there was a rumour that all rephlex reseases where aphex alliases, not true but understandable...

i can't believe its taken this long for a Rephlex thread. I'll leave the Aphex stuff because there is already an Aphex thread or two knocking about here (synopsis of my opinion: classic).

i think there's a lot of variety on the rephlex label, certainly more than i would have thought. much of it isn't very good, but there's loads of wonderful stuff on there too.

Search:

Cylob - Rewind 12" robo-Steven Hawking funk in 80s style. the original is good, but the DMX Krew remix is so much better because of dmxs way with a melody, adds in nice strings and stuff.

DMX Krew - Fffrreeesssshhhhh!!! LP. is this supposed to be electro, becuase it isn't, its more 80s pop really (and, yes, i'm sure we've all probably had enough of that by now, but this album is so much fun. all my family like it. apart from the ones that don't). see also the We Are DMX album, which is sort of halfway between Plone and Duran Duran.

Gentle People - Soundtracks for living. Serge Gainsbourg swirly lounge muzik

Yee-King - super user. patchy album but with 3 great tracks which, i think, make getting the album worthwhile. 2 are drill'n'bass type things which sound like Squarepusher, if he was actually any good. the third is raw Two Lone Swordsmen style electro.

Bogdan Raczynski - Samurai Math Beats, or Boku Mo Wakaran. low fi drill'n'bass that gives you a headache, but is very danceable and has emo vocals (but is good)

more later...

Universal Indicator = tasty (i.e. banging acid rave).

more search:

Cylob - Diof 97. rather BOC-esque melancholy
Global Goon's Cradle of History - twee and nice,
Ovuca's King Stacey 12". although his albums can be seriously hit and miss affairs, this single encapsulates all that is good about Ovuca, frenetic, silly, quite harsh but beautiful at the same time.

Cylob - are we not men who live and die 7" i think this is quite hard to get hold of now, but its worth getting. is just a voice repeating the title, but sounds so fractured and haunted. in the same way that the robovoice in daft punks digital love sounds so emotional. Destroy:

lektrogirl album is very irritating. computer game sounds can be ace, in someone elses hands that is.
what i've heard of the JP Buckle album just sounds like aimless meandering.
PP Roy's album is very disappointing and sounds like bad Bentley Rhythm Ace (yes i know), but there's one nice track on there - "just say yes" or something.
squarepusher? well, a little harsh i know, but i do think he is a talent unfulfilled because his records just aren't very enjoyable, yet theres a nagging feeling that they could be.

I don't like everything on Rephlex but as record label they operate with consistent agenda. Plus all their artists are purely in it for the love of making music, or thats the impression I get from listening to their records. Not a big fan of Cylob and what the fuck has happened to Aphex is anyones guess

No worries... Aphex Twin is going to release one hell of double album next month. Every Aphex fan is going to be very happy, trust me.

theres bits of the new aphex album floating around on WinMx, it does sound very good, very typically Aphex.

seven months pass...
Gareth, Christ man, "Stephen Hawking funk" is the funniest thing I've read all week. Thank you so much for that!

PS, what do you all think of the Braindance compilation? I almost picked it up the other day (it's so cheap), but I wasn't sure if it's worth it...

i like a lot of this sort of stuff, especailly aphex twin himself and mu-ziq,but out of all that i've heard, two stand out particularly: nannou, the b side to windowlicker, which is based around the sound of sort of wind up toy,and the already mentioned rewind by cylob, which for a vaguely gimmicky song never seems to get old and always puts me in a good mood
