25. Portishead

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a tough one because a lot of the time a record comes out and it's the exact right time for that record to come out, so it's not ahead of it's time as such. was 'Autobahn' ahead of it's time in this case? wasn't it actually quite retro at the same time? what about picking tracks that were largely ignored at the time of their release but became cult classics years later?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't even have to be innovative records in which case

did portishead ever really use a theremin? i used to think they did, but then i saw that live symphony performance and they were using a moog for what i had always thought were the theremin parts.

Which record is that? "Hastings Street"?

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

49. Not a recommendation, but Kinky Machine arrived two years too early for Britpop when "Shockaholic" would surely have reached the top twenty for one week only...

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

51. La's: There She Goes
52. Procol Harum: In Held In Twas I

The Beatles tracks that were ahead of their time are too many to pick just one.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the La's ahead of their time? are you pulling my dick?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Pere Ubu's David Thomas, its not that you're ahead of your time, it's that you're OF it and everyone else is dealing with the past!

That said,

55. Pere Ubu

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

also, considering the Darknes...

56. Redd Kross

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the La's ahead of their time?

How many UK bands were doing highly melodic guitar based pop in 1989?
How many UK bands were doing highly melodic guitar based pop in 1994?

Certainly ahead of the phenomenon that was Britpop.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

57. MC5: Kick Out The Jams

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

38. Leon Theremin, inventor of the world's first electronic instrument, the theremin (see Portishead upthread).

Erm, he wasn't the first. There were different sorts of proto-synthesizers around years before the theremin; it's just that theremin became the most famous electronic instrument of the early 20th century via movie soundtracks etc.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

38. Leon Theremin, inventor of the world's first electronic instrument, the theremin (see Portishead upthread).

Erm, he wasn't the first. There were different sorts of proto-synthesizers around years before the theremin; it's just that theremin became the most famous electronic instrument of the early 20th century via movie soundtracks etc.

that might be so, but that ol' russian was still ahead of his time!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

64. Brian Eno - Baby's On FIre.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

that might be so, but that ol' russian was still ahead of his time!

I wouldn't say so. While the theremin has indeed an interesting sound, it can only produce that one sound, so it has more of a gimmick value (even today, when it's used, it's mostly as a gimmick), and it never had big influence in the development of electronic music. I think the guys who dreamed of machines which can produce any kind of a sound, and then tried to build those machines were far more ahead of their times than Leon Theremin.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

also, considering the Darknes...

56. Redd Kross

Yeah, not to mention Jellyfish, Urge Overkill, Pooh Sticks, and on and on...

I don't get the Darkness. The songs are so shitty!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Arthur, you need to think of it as a starter band, ie, "Oh, got it, this stuff can sound good. Now to find a band that does it better!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know, I'm an old crank, I shouldn't rain on anyone's parade. But I keep reading that despite the joke element (which I don't mind at all) the songs are ace and they just don't sound like it to me. I don't know, Dave Q and Scott Seward have kinda said all this already elsewhere and said it much better.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely a devalued concept. Pop has got so desperate for "fresh" ideas that practically every nook and cranny of the past has now been revisited and recolonised. Everything was ahead of its time.

ArfArf, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)
