Is the Supermen Lovers' "Starlight" actually any good? (yes, and how, IMHO.) Is Britain going to the dogs definitively and forever because Bob The Builder is back at number one? (nope, though someone named Kortbein might have a second opinion.) What of the rest? Redman at number 11, wow!

I'm glad BTB beat that dreadful dirge by the Superman Lovers to number one.

Oh come on James, it's not that bad. May not sound as wonderful in three years' time as "Music Sounds Better With You" still does, but knocked "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)" into a cocked hat the moment I heard it. Isn't the underproduction of "Starlight" part of its charm?

Again I ask, WHERE IS ALCAZAR?

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it's at number seven in Germany:

Maybe Robin. I just get distracted by the dreadful video. I will close my eyes next time it is on.

The dreadful video is part of the charm! That, and the fact that they do the full-on disco vibe unapologetically and without nods to current technology. It's also 8,000,000 light-years better than that Jamaroquai song that tries to mine the same era and FAILS UTTERLY.

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, you weren't talking about Alacazar. Sorry.

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what you said applies to Supermen Lovers as well, Dan, so I don't really mind.

Shock of the week - new Fatboy Slim single at #30! I thought everything he does would break the Top 10 (don't read that as a recommendation though, I can't stand FS). Nice to see plenty of 'alt- rock' rubbish way down in the 30s (Marilyn Manson, Lifehouse and American Hi-Fi), but Staind at #15? Eek! Staind = Mega-Dud.

DG, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dg, don't take this the wrong way, but what DO you like? i swear i have never seen you positively refer to any musical artist, although this is very possibly because i do not read threads which are about bands i have never heard of.

Supermen Lovers suffers from nice backing/rubbish vocal+lyrics chart dance syndrome, and has a pointless video. "grotesque"/"dark" claymation = dud. Ed Case doesn't appear to have done well off the back of his played to death Gorillaz remix, though that might have a lot to do with it sounding exactly the same. All the other new entries seem to be directly proportional to press exposure and airplay.

Ethan, I like plenty of stuff, but as with most things there is more I dislike than I like. If you're really interested, you could search for my first ever question/post 'The Associates: Have The Years Been Kind?'. There's one. Now about The Smiths...

Lifehouse and American Hi-Fi - Can't we ship these duds back to the States?

DJ Martian, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You have to suffer them as penance for letting Travis and Coldplay stink up things here.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haven't heard most of the 40 artists. Don't think I like any of them.
