Any thoughts? (Beyond the inappropriateness/appropriateness of the title in light of today's tragic events)

This album was recorded in NYC?

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well deserved. All I can say right now.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what for??

she's very much well past her use-by date

nice

loop dandy, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NYC indeed, though I've never got the impression that it was a particular City, much as it's not a particular Sea. I must listen again. And of course a song called Kamikaze on it. Spooky.

Apparently she's touring in DC today, so her acceptance speech was a little... distracted.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I predicted this. This was the best album by far this year.

anthony, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a great record. PJ Harvey rocks. the opener in particular is probably my favourite single song of the year.

DV, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus, was her 3rd nomination, so it's about time.

berbis, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This result + failure of Lloyd Cole to be nominated = final and utter discrediting of MMP.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay. Thought so, she deserves it. Thank gawd it wasn't Zero 7 or Turin Brakes as was predicted.

I would like to feel happier about it but... I can't.

I think its pretty typical. Mercury Music award is and has always been caught up in its own petty politics. Someone dancy will win next year, its high time. PJ Harvey is good but I get the feeling they took their chance to give it to someone who has made a few good albums as opposed to giving it to the person who made the best album of the year.

Have you heard the sex and the guttral vocals. How it sounds like Alberta Hunter and Kim Gordon. It haunts me , like a train right thru me one minute steam the next electric !

I'm going to stick my neck out and say I would have rathered Super Furry Animals to win. They may be nothing profound or amazing but they seem to have serious/funny/weird songs all at the same time unlike many other bands. Also they fuse genres as if they were having a cup of tea. And then there was the time they played God! Show me magic on Good Morning Televisions "Search for a new Take That" with t shirts that said "take drugs" and "swear at your parents" and stuff. Very very funny. So I think they should have won. do you reckon I can put a bet on the chems winning it next year at this early stage?

Ronan, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know Ronan. Do they have bookies in Ireland?

mark s, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe they're generally used for trading pretty looking pig hooves, however if I jump on my sure footed hog and trot down to the local meat market I may find someone willing to bet shiny shells or bits of glass. I can only hope.

Ronan, Saturday, 15 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You Dubliners and yer fancy-dan hogs. I wish I had a hog to travel me to and fro to the local meat market. All I have for company is a hoop and stick. And when I get home my alcoholic father makes me hula hoop and flogs my arse with the stick simultaneously.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did you read Hot Press this week Michael? I'm famous.

Ronan, Sunday, 16 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hang on a second, Ronan, The Chemistry Experiment haven't even finished recording our album yet!

(oh, how we larfed... or perhaps not)
