Bands/Artists Respected For Music More Than Politics

Crass.

(Not that I don't disagree with their political angle generally, but as they got older, their music got artier and weirder and better, while the confrontational poetry and preaching just starting becoming more of a distraction and more of a prototype for DHR bands, maybe with more run-on sentences and less exclamation points. "10 Notes On A Summer Day" notwithstanding, which I think is their most outstanding release)

Radiohead, obviously.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Benn

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking every band except for Rage Against the Machine.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Merle Haggard - who a lot of left-wingers managed to love despite "Okie From Muskogee" and "Fightin' Side of Me," and who a lot of right-wingers managed to love despite the likes of "Irma Jackson." all of 'em great songs.

A lot of hip hop - the misogyny is just way too much for me sometimes. I know a lot of it rebels from it, but its still there in a lot of the more gangsta stuff.

Big Red, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

And apparently the very first Skrewdriver record (i.e. "the good one" by most accounts) was before the pre-white-power line-up, so if that's the case, you can't say "first Skrewdriver"... (unless you musically like later Skrewdriver, or, um, if you are pro-white-power I guess)

Dead Prez
Fugazi
Toby Keith (seems to be getting better reviews lately)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

same thing happened to flux of pink indians when they became flux and came out with an uncarved block:Taoist On-U Sound Post-Punk!!! gotta love it. although i love their first album and the neu smell/tube disaster single just as much. and i don't agree that 10 Notes is crass's best album. my vote would go for Penis Envy.

Gang of Four, Nina Simone

guns 'n' roses
gary numan (though he's New Labour these days)
every dancehall reggae act out there (unless you like "bun de chichi man!" lyrics)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Kennedys (East Bay Ray is the shit)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(though I do like a few aspects of the DKs' politics -- "Nazi Punks Fuck Off"; "Where Do You Draw the Line"; "Moral Majority")

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(and by Frankenchrist their politics -- "This Could Be Anywhere"; "Chicken Farm"; "At My Job" -- were frequently better than their music)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Minutemen..

(That doesn't mean that their politics were excessively bad or too preachy.. Just that their music kicked ass and the politics were secondary..)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Joy Division

Schwingung (Damian), Friday, 12 December 2003 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dare I add Phil Collins...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If the thread title had been "Bands/Artists Hated For Music Less Than Politics" you might have onto something

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like mostly lefty artists have been mentioned. We are so condescending to the bohemians in the post-Soviet era... What about the rightists? Can anyone stomach skinhead punk etc., overlook the unpalatable politics? Or is the right wing to powerful and threatening to be tolerated in that way?

Another thought is that any political band's messages will necessarily be overlooked by a great many young'uns once they reach a certain level of popularity--and that includes Public Enemy.

kdjfe, Friday, 12 December 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, about Crass--was there a turning point in their politics? I stopped listening around "Don't Get Caught," and yes, the music was getting better, but the message of that song was a bit more defeatist than the earlier stuff--am I misreading?

kdjfe, Friday, 12 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul Revere and the Raiders

they got really really burnt out. the screaming at a wall syndrome. theirs was an intensity that was almost impossible to maintain.

adam michel, Saturday, 13 December 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

adam michel, Saturday, 13 December 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Move/Roy Wood/Wizzard

DaleK, Thursday, 25 December 2003 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)
