Hell, I can do this one!
--------------
September -- pop's most perfect song it is
Be Ever Wonderful
Can't Hide Love (the MAW remix is pretty damned good, too)
Can't Let Go (jeez, I agree a lot with you for a change, Geir)
Runnin'
Lady Sun (a certain Basement Jaxx song made good use of this one)
Africano
That's the Way of the World
Mighty Mighty
Keep Your Head to the Sky

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I would substitute:
Evil
Runnin' - Brazilian Rhyme (Interlude)

three years pass...
I've been listening to a All'n All and Raise! a lot lately, and I think I like their disco cuts like "Let's Groove" more than the funk and Afro-soul tunes, even though they're great too. So what else should I get? What about the first couple of albums, which are supposed to be more jazzy and experimental, are they worth anything?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone should own I Am.

The tracks I have heard from their early LPs didn't do much for me (not funky enough I thought) but I found their contribution to the Sweet Sweetback's... soundtrack to be quite arresting when I saw the movie years ago.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

Is I Am more disco than All'n All? Based on AMG snippets Powerlight sounds kinda what I'm looking for, is it any good?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

I Am is 1979, so was recorded at the apex of their disco phase. Contains "Boogie Wonderland".

I don't know Powerlight.

btw my POX:

1. Star
2. September
3. After The Love Has Gone (esp. the segue into "Let Your Feelings Show", also a top tune, call that #4)
5. In The Stone
6. Fantasy
7. Back On The Road
8. [something from Sweet Sweetback's Badasssssssss Song? e.g. "Come On Feet", if they play on that]
9. Shining Star
10. [something else I've forgotten]

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'll have to give I Am a try then. Has anyone heard their electro-funk record, I think it's called Electric Universe? AMG doesn't give it much praise, but it was highly regarded in some Guide to Funk I read.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

Is I Am more disco than All'n All?

As in having a considerably more straight 4/4 beat all the way through: Yes.

I might change the order a bit, but your top 10 is pretty much the same as mine. :) And I like that you didn't include "Boogie Wonderland", which I've always found a bit too blunt and simplistic and therefore overrated in the EWF canon.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 12:47 (eight years ago)

Anybody read the Maurice White autobiography that's just out...any good?..,

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 13:31 (eight years ago)

14. Can’t Let Go

Just a perfect disco song.

ILXorcist 2: The Heretic (Eric H.), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 13:37 (eight years ago)

I regret not including "Changing Times."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 13:42 (eight years ago)

As years go by, I've become more and more convinced "Fantasy" is the best pop song of the 20th century. It's so transcendent in its melodic beauty and immaculate arrangement that it escapes any of those binaries and categorizations so often set on popular music (especially pop made by black musicians), such as gritty/artificial or raw/refined. It's just a perfect world to get lost in.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 14:39 (eight years ago)

I just watched The Jonas Brothers perform "Boogie Wonderland" at the Kennedy Center Honors and tbh I really don't understand how this happened

John Legend was ok but not Jonas Brothers.

nine months pass...

However, songwriter Allee Willis says the seasons have little to do with the date of choice here:

We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth … ’ and the one that just felt the best was the 21st. I constantly have people coming up to me and they get so excited to know what the significance was. And there is no significance beyond it just sang better than any of the other dates.

I learned my greatest lesson in songwriting: Never let the lyric get in the way of the groove. So … sorry!
