Lil Jon Needs To Fall Under A Truck

So I got the compilation Crunk And Disorderly (TVT) in the mail the other day, and listened to it yesterday. And I have come to the realization that "crunk" is the worst style of rap I have ever heard, and that includes the Surf MCs.

If anyone wants to explain the appeal of these country-ass, bellowing morons, please go right ahead.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wait wait wait...you like DEATH METAL, right?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Some people don’t like it and can’t get their ear around it. But I’ve got my ear around it and went ‘oh OK, this is how people feel about me.’ How I feel about them dirty South people, when I couldn’t get my ear around it I realised there’s a whole load of people who listened to me and think ‘I cant get my ear around it.’ Eventually if they keep listening and listening they will. But dirty sound is just grimey, dirty music." - Wiley

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"country-ass"

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil John is pretty funny. When I first saw him on the MTV awards I thought he was a comedian poking fun at rapper excess.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's that quote from, Blount?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm guessing phil doesn't "get" the limbo either

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean this isn't some alex in nyc style thing where i have to explain why dmx "bellowing" is no different than hank rollins or him out of killing joke (nb: i have never heard killing joke so i dunno if they bellow or not)...i mean...DEATH METAL!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

But maybe he just prefers music that doesn't rock to music that does!

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi! was SO much more rocking than death metal, for crissakes.

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to not be down with crunk, but thank god for booze.

(nickalicious), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil John's appearance in Britney's 'I Got the Boom Boom' is also excellent. His accent on the second syllable of her name is strangely appealing and makes me laugh.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

alex in nyc actually kinda likes lil jon in his fashion

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW Killing Joke bellow.

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it possible to "get" Li'l Jon and still think he sucks as bad as Pastor Troy?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckin' A, the "dum dum dum dum dum" intro bit of "Get Low" is one of my favorite things in music this year.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

are you listening to this by yourself or in your living room or something daft like that?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The song and it's many versions live in the world THIS year. Who the hell cares when it was per se' "released to record stores"? The merengue version just came out, for crissakes. And it is FAST FAST FAST. If the link I posted above isn't enough, I also recommend reading recent Voice pieces by Carol Cooper (on Lil Jon), Frank Kogan (on Ying Yang Twins, Youngbloodz), and Chuck Eddy (licks on David Banner's screwed album, Hitman Sammmy Sam, plus a NEW all-crunk roundup including the great aforementioned *Crunk and Disordly* that'll appropriately run the week of Christmas.) On the other hand, as Frank has pointed out, Southern crunk and Scandinavian dark metal increasingly have many beautiful gothic North European melodies in common, and if I remember right, Phil's not a big fan of Scandinavian dark metal, either. So maybe that explains...something.

chuck, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like "Get Low," no matter how crass the lyrics are.

But wait....who are the Surf MC's? The hip hop equivalent of....http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc400/c422/c4226570233.jpg ???????

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw, what other tunes have skeet skeet chants? A couple brass bands I saw in New Orleans were doing it, I couldn't tell if it was something they came up with or altered or what, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean this isn't some alex in nyc style thing where i have to explain why dmx "bellowing" is no different than hank rollins or him out of killing joke (nb: i have never heard killing joke so i dunno if they bellow or not)...i mean...DEATH METAL!!
-- fiddo centington (dubplatestyl...), December 11th, 2003.

I like all of the random, nonsensical attacks on Alex in NYC you've been spouting lately. It's like you're drunk at a dinner party.

David Allen, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but what differentiates crunk as a style from other kinds of rap? Is it just the macho shouted vocals?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess has a personal axe to grind these days, it seems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, you forgot Sterling Clover (Bone Crusher).

:-(

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Onyx's Bacdafucup proto-crunk?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

why, because they shout?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

were they fat?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That's my question exactly. Does shouting have anything to do with crunk?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

did they have a jewel encrusted goblet?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

phil wanted them to fall under a truck

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Two of'em were, as I remember. The other two were slim. And they were all bald. I have that album, I'm somewhat embarassed to say.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

closet biohazard fan?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"JUST THROW YA GUNZ IN THA AIR, AND *BUK BUK* LIKE YA JUST DON'T CARE!"

etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

An interesting tidbit about Bacdafucup from AMG:

"The album even beat out such stiff competition as Dr. Dre's rap classic The Chronic at the Soul Train Awards for Best Rap Album that year [1993]."

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really. I saw Onyx open for Public Enemy and Ice-T and House of Pain at a show at the New Ritz in 1992 that most of the bands refused to show up for due to poor promotion. I remember thinking that Onyx were pretty entertaining, so I picked up the album when it came out. Biohazard kinda ruined "Slam," actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

are you listening to this by yourself or in your living room or something daft like that?

It sounds great in the living room alone too, though!

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"If anyone wants to explain the appeal of these country-ass, bellowing morons, please go right ahead."

i think this is the kind of question that answers itself.

does anyone know when crunk became a noun? i'd never heard it used like that until southern rap became 'big' again this year.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought "crunk" was an adjective that implied "crowded, happenin' and hoppin'," as in "we're the type of people who make the club get crunk".

You tell me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

crunk = crazy + drunk

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I always heard heard it used to mean getting high.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

happenin and hoppin!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be imagining this but I somehow remember a Conan O Brien skit where they were going to make up a new dirty word....and the word they came up with was "crunk"

Does anyone else remember this or am I just cr8zy?

How fucking stupid. There's a lot of great death metal. Lil Jon, however, sucks, from everything I have heard.

Confusing that terrible trash with real rap is a joke.

This is why people think rap sucks nowadays, because all they get exposed to is crap like Lil Jon, and miss out on the good shit.

Oh well.

Rob D, Sunday, 25 April 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

believing there's such thing as "real rap" is a joke

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 25 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, okay, moron.

Perhaps I shouldn't separate rap into "real" and "false", because that's fucking stupid on a "true metal/false metal" level, but if you're insinuating that there is no rap above the bottom of the barrel aesthetics of Lil Jon, then you are by and large a fucking idiot.

uh, Sunday, 25 April 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought the first UGK tapes out of the trunk of Pimp C's Grand Prix when they did shows at Club Venue in Corsicana. Get your mind correct, you wannabe Athens thug. I've been to Athens. I know how you bitches roll. Come to Acres Home or Cloverland if you think you're hard and you want to learn how the shells burn.

The first time I heard Lil Flip was on an episode of Fastlane. I'm fucking lame. I drove through the Midwest once, when I was a kid. I mostly remember the hotels. I saw the baseball stadium in Chicago, on the way through, just from the highway. I love expensive running shoes. I have more Radiohead CDs than UGK ones. But sometimes I just want to pretend! "Don't rap about what you saw in the Scarface movie, nigga, when you can't even spell Uzi, nigga. We live this."
