Alright, who here actually downloads and uses Ringtones on a regular basis?

When the chart first appeared in NME i thought "how far from the punk years have we fallen" re capitalism/commerciality, but thought no more of it.

Now they are another format of single to count for the chart, nearly.

So, do you?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i never really found out how to do it. i would love to have eminem's 'stan' for a ring tone. though. can you help me? i have an ericsson phone.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it's probably a good way for people to make money to replace revenue lost from illegal downloading of music

i still just have a simple 'ring ring' tone tho

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

(Imagine if back in 1978 you could have had your mobile ring to the sound of "Complete Control".... how differnt the world would have to be)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I don't. All the people at work with special ringtones have film themes, never pop ones.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently they are a much bigger moneyspinner than releasing singles themselves.

jed (jed_e_3), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone who sits by me has some crazy bullshit ringtone. It's annoying as hell. Just let it fucking ring like a goddamned phone.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Abba - "Ring Ring" ?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i downloaded and have used for the last year "California Man" by the Move. nobody understands or recognizes it tho'.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

what, the intro? I'd be on that one....

So, what if you used that "somebody answer the phone" track from a couple years ago? would your phone like implode?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

So, basically, everyone will be making songs called "Hear me calling you" next year and making a fortune and being number one for ever...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

intro yes

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hardcore. I programme my own. I mean, where on earth am I ever going to be able to download Velvet Underground or Spacemen 3 ringtones? I make mine own!

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this fantasy about when i one day have a cell phone (I am a Luddite, FYI) and program my own fucked up obscure song bits into ringtones... but then I felt guilty about making beautiful art into a petty signifier of everything I hate.

It would still be fun, though. But not fun enough because no one would recognize the songs and I would blow my chance at looking totally cool and impressing everyone. And isn't that the whole point?

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, "Revolution" must be the easiest ringtone to program ever....

(not the beatles one, for anyone that doesnt do scrolling up...)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That's why I love Spacemen 3 ringtones! Because they're so simple!

(That said, I still hvae the bassline from Spz's Run right now, which is not so simple)

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend programs his own and keeps telling me that "it's simple, really" which i don't quite believe.
the only tone i've ever truly wanted was "eye of the tiger," but it wouldn't work in my shitty budget nokia. my u.s. phone has an irritating trip-hopesque ring, and my u.k. phone bleeps out "ignition" which people either don't recognize or makes them scream about me lining the pockets of a kiddie fiddler.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not in a million years. I hate the idea of doing something for the sole reason that some stranger might think it clever (like wearing a clever t-shirt.) The nadir of vanity.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't owned a cell phone for almost a year now. i think the only thing that might bring me around is a numan ring tone or two.

a friend of mine just got a new cell and told me that the ring tones that came with the phone are so irritating that he has no choice but to download better ones. now he's downloading new ones, like once a week.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i once spent about 20 minutes trying to compose the Roobard & Custard theme but got bored/saw sense

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Everybody knows "On Broadway" is the best ringtone

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Entertainer" is a close second, though

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got my first cell phone back in October and immediately downloaded Wilco's "I am Trying to Break Your Heart". I plan on getting New Order's "Blue Monday" soon.

I don't get enough calls that I would need to more than one ringtone, though.

boldbury, Friday, 12 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(I am a Luddite, FYI)
That's an interesting thing to say on an internet message board. Whee!

(jump magic jump)

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 13 December 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i keep that shit on vibrate

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've no clue how to download 'em.
But I'd probably choose The Shadows' "Peace Pipe" if I had the chance. Or any peppy Baroque dance tune.

Once in a cafe, I was quite surprised to hear "Smoke on the Water" on someone's phone - o boy, did it sound twee and pathetic that way!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 13 December 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a whole bunch -- mostly jay-z, but also nappy roots and sean paul. most recently, "step in the name of love".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 13 December 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had a cell phone, I'd try to make my own "Eruption" ringtone.

Clarke B., Saturday, 13 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried, out of curiosity, to download a Mr Scruff ringtone from the Ninja Tune site but it didn't work sadly.

In 2000, I self-composed a ringtone version of Stereolab's "French Disko" which nobody recognised cos I couldn't work out how to do notes of different lengths so it all just zipped through in superfast semiquavers.

I now have a ring. Just a ring. Like, y'know, a telephone. Woo.

Meh.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 13 December 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i never have and probably never will
my current phone used to belong to my cousin though, and when i got it the ringtone was the theme to "murder she wrote."..
one of my friends made his own ringtone of the bells by jeff mills...

robin (robin), Saturday, 13 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it'd also really like to hear elfman's "the breakfast machine" (you know - from pee wee's big adventure) as a ring tone.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've downloaded a few, but haven't really looked for them since I found the right one.. a nice midi rendition of "Big Poppa".

I don't see the point in changing your ringtone constantly, but it's nice to be able to find what you want to use.

I also read ILX from my phone on breaks from work.. in fact I discovered this thread while browsing from my mobile. heh.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have "Hole In The Head" by Sugababes and "Girls & Boys" by Blur on my phone because I was drunk and mistakenly thought they might sound something like the original songs. They don't.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I got the Rapture album and all the tracks are available as ringtones.

I have to admit it: If my phone could accept them, I would be using HOJL for it.

"Aint there one damn song that can make meh..
Break down and upload it to my phone to tell me someone is ringng me..

And not only that, there's been a magazine out since January? I've never seen it in the shops, but there's their website: http://www.ringtonemagazine.com/ It's answered quite a few of my questions about ringtones.
