minna (minna), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Scribe is the shining star of New Zealand's much celebrated young hip-hop scene.

Who are other shining stars in this nascent scene?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i have no idea! etc to thread

minna (minna), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hamish, duane and george gossett to thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

etc, Friday, 12 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

other young stars - the breakin wreckwordz crew (CON PSY!), i'm a bit over mareko but savage is still k-gr8, um the footsouljahs, tyna from dubious bros has gone solo, etc.

hiphop nz

etc, Friday, 12 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

but yeah minna, i've been totally crushed out on scribe & p-money for ages. scribe's album has broken so many sales records in nz it's . . . weird, considering I used to see him perform to thirty ppl in bath st & stuff.

etc, Friday, 12 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hip-hop??????

RJG (RJG), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is the scribe album out on vinyl? if so can someone give it to me for my birthday

d, Friday, 12 December 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember the decepticonz winning all the freestyle battles in auckland

luke../, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no excuse for my reaction, but I was rather surprised to discover the prevalence of hip hop in New Zealand when I was there. I think I only saw Decepticonz and Scribe and maybe a couple others though (and this was just on C4 - the videos).

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

nza hip hop crush thread???

i aint the madd rapper but im mad at rap niggas, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

was also surprised to see that all the the Clean/Bats/Tall Dwarfs records were only available *at import prices* from fuckin Australia!! And here I was thinking Flying Nun was a local NZ label...

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

NZ hip-hop right now seems like West Coast hip-hop circa '92. Dawn Raid as Death Row, South Auckland as South Central, same horrible design (the Brush Script typeface in particular, on the Dawn Raid logo, NWA and Eazy records), probable gang affiliations... same air of excitement.

Scribe, Mareko, Deceptikonz, et al. are good--but they are so fucking New York. Scribe could very easily be Jay-z if he weren't shouting out Blindspott and the D4!

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 13 December 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Probable gang affiliations my arse. Where the fuck did you get that idea from?

anony, Saturday, 13 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah etc you got it, it's that facial precision! his merry eyes and his dancing and always on the brink of a big smile, so cute. anyway wish we could have giggled together over scribe earlier but i only saw the video last night for the first time, blundering in late aussie style. are there any other hot nz rappers (forget the quality of actual rapping)??? this thread is like the opposite of any thread about a woman musician on ilm - i wanted it to be a perve fest but it ended up being about the music...

minna (minna), Saturday, 13 December 2003 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry jaxon about the link, it doesnt work for me anymore anyway, here is a site where you can watch it: http://www.amplifier.co.nz/amp/home
the video is #1 in the chart to the left... you might have to sign up but you just fill out the form and they let you watch it right away, no back and forth getting passwords or anything

minna (minna), Saturday, 13 December 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they have a lofi dialup version of it there too

minna (minna), Saturday, 13 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Perve fest!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 December 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Probable gang affiliations my arse. Where the fuck did you get that idea from?

Mongrel Mob, et al. seem pretty huge right now (runnin' this P business) and are particularly big in South Auckland, I gather. Gang associations in the same way as Snoop, Dre, Eazy--probably not members themselves, but likely not very far removed. Obviously I was never making a concrete statement as much as I was trying to flesh out a kind of fanciful comparison that or may not have any actual basis in reality!

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 13 December 2003 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

voila @d@ml feast yr eyes

minna (minna), Saturday, 13 December 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

him and P-money are sub-par wanna be New York/R.O.C bullshit.
and he doesn't look very good in person.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 15 December 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

minna (minna), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one paul. Now minna has to mail Scribe an acid bomb and shoot herself.

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i live in the south island. he toured here recently, top of the charts. but i wouldn't make it across the street. even for female hip-hop, minna.
but hip hop does seem to be getting a big media push here, just like "P". I thought "P-Money" was a bad name, with that dumb drug-scene overtone, and the obvious derivation from "Ice T" et. al. is even dumber aggrevated cringe.

i'm just the white man on the Poly-chromatic street these days but nz hip-hop just seems to me like another imported sports franchise to keep people busy. Suffering from the cultural disadvantage of not having gangsta/goodie-boy rap shoved down my throat for the last few years, i can't differentiate the local stuff from american "culture". Maybe i should take the local night class that's being offered in "hip hop aesthetics" (incidentally also part of the music degree the university now offers), but "education" for "street talk" ? huh ?

maybe i'm just too out of touch for them streets. i couldn't give a fig about it. they play it on tv programmes that have coca cola ads, so i admit i haven't checked out that video either, sorry.

b.t.w.
(a)the flying nun material is more typically likely to turn up in museums these days.
(b)why do people spell my (normal) name with two 't's ?

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

OMIGOD SCRIBE SHOT HIS NEW VIDEO AT MY FLAT ON SUNDAY!!!!

it's the video for "dreaming", he's out on our balcony (haha lunkish brazilian-d&b-fan guy packing up the gear after the shoot's summary - "acting like a pussy to get some pussy". he also reckons DLT & Che Fu(!!) are mad P addicts right now!) writing rhymes & being all reflective.

!!!

other hott MCs - hmmmn, none of the underground kids is that good-looking; um, unique is sorta cute inna westie fashion. patriarch (on the left) is nice - see if you can find the "highway" video . . . king kapisi in screems from da old plantation is great. hmmn, I'm a bit out of touch w/the hip-hop scene - there's some cute MCs in the dub scene.

hey george EVERYBODY knows that P-Money got called that coz his first name's peter (aww!) & he was huge into ca$h money back in '97 or whenever.
fuck the great kiwi knocking machine, "why even bother" bullshit.

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

minna (minna), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Poly-chromatic", geez what a killer pun! Respect!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

hey minna you heard/seen nesian mystik?

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i didn't know that about the name.

I admit i hadn't gone out of my way to find out though. Maybe other people who don't know (if any other such people exist) will jump to that obviously incorrect suggestion i made above too. It _is_ a pretty loaded monicker. So the the gangsta implication is some ironic joke ?

I _did_ find out today that Scribe is from Christchurch (South Island), and that i'm the only person that hasn't heard his #1 single, and that P Money is 3rd placed in the world for his turntable skills (though i guess everyone knew that too)

good luck to them -- obv. i'd rather nz artists commanded the respect and attention that american acts can by comparison have taken for granted for all these years, if they're good.

but expressions of ignorance, that's not the same as "the great kiwi knocking machine", and the expressions of indifference are just boredom with a music genre, wherever it's manufactured

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"For The People" is fucking incredible, as far as Nesian Mystik goes--but have they every done anything else good?

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

havent heard/seen nesian mystik or hardly any of this stuff really... i know the name tho, i should dl 'for the ppl'? anything else?

btw how is the on yr balcony video going to look! do you have a good view?
