So, I'm in this CBS Sportsline football pool with my mom, her husband, my brother, and his wife. And it let's me ask a poll question each week (obviously totally not related to football), and this week I decided to make everyone pick a favorite Stones song, given the list of my nine favorites. Have at it. Feel free to be passionate about whatever I left out.....

Out of Time
Torn and Frayed
Satisfaction
Sympathy for the Devil
Wild Horses
Moonlight Mile
Love in Vain
Mother's Little Helper
Gimmie Shelter

rainman (rainman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Torn and Frayed.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

sympathy

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

gimme shelter

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wild Horses

may pang (maypang), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

torn and frayed was VERY close

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Satisfaction

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'd like to make it very clear that I'm saying that because i'm horny

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Ventilator Blues is the greatest song of all time

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, I took Torn and Frayed.

rainman (rainman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a thread somewhere where I ask what's so great about Gimme Shelter and somebody answers and I still don't get it

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile: Satisfaction is awesome

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter. It's all about the intro riff, and the way the song builds.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mother's Little Helper

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Satisfaction is the only one on that list that wouldn't be in contention (for me) at any time.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ... oyh my god this thread rules!!!!!!

yeah I would have to say "Torn and Frayed" too!!

actually i find it really fascinating that a couple of my most favored, interesting posters also chose "Torn and Frayed"!!!

I mean I REALLY find this to be an amazing ILX mind-meld type moment. I would seriously invite any ILX poster who loves "Torn and Frayed" to drink beers with me. I would buy. Multiple rounds. I would buy.

Anyway ... yeah TORN!!! and fucking FRAYED!!!!! Al Perkins' steel guitar solo on that song gives me a reason to live.

Al Perkins.

Al Perkins.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm such a nerd but i don't care --- Exile changed my life.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Gimme Shelter," no fucking contest

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos OTM.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 14 December 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wild Horses, but it's a close race.

sailor moonie, Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

but Matos, how do you feel about AL PERKINS!!!!!????

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you can be my partner in crime!

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the Stones more than any other band ever. except maybe Zeppelin.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Torn and Frayed"!!!

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you , my fellow ILM brothers who have EARS!

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

although ... haha now that I hear it - "Loving Cup" kind of rules.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah ... fuck it. "Loving Cup" is the best.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of those, I'd go for "Mother's Little Helper"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 14 December 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love in Vain"

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 14 December 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Moonlight Mile....but Gimme Shelter is the ultimate druggy dread Stones epic ever.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Torn And Frayed is not the best song in there, but it's the one I love most right now.

Second would be Moonlight Mile.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

As for what you left out, I'm starting to think that Tumbling Dice should get more recognition than it does, not that it's "obsure" or anything.

Blinded By Rainbows is also pretty good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out Of Time"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mother's Little Helper

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

usually I'd say Shelter, but I heard Wild Horses on the radio and it really got me, so I'm going with that one.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Of those listed, I'm going with "Gimme Shelter," but my fave Stones song of all time remains "Monkey Man".

Runners-up:
"When the Whip Comes Down"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" (natch)
"2,000 Light Years from Home"
"Bitch"
"Too Much Blood"
"When the Boys Go"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm gonna say Shelter

HuckleberryMann, Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Gimme Shelter," but I'm gonna say right up front that I like Grand Funk's version almost as much as (and, under the right/wrong circumstances, more than) the original.

My absolute favorite Stones song? "Casino Boogie."

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, those are all decent choices, but "Where The Boys Go" is absolute pants! Even "Little T & A" is better than that!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Satisfakshun! Why you all hatin on it?!

Aaron A., Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of time

cis (cis), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter. It's also all about Merry Clayton. W/ "Torn and Frayed" very close second and "Out of Time" very close third. The song I love the most right now is "(Walking Thru the) Sleepy City".

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe i'm the only person who said "sympathy". if i had free reign i would have chosen "jumping jack flash" or "as tears go by"

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Prodigal Son

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What can I tell ya...I love "Where the Boys Go." Maybe it's the quasi-ham-fisted of an arguably punky simplicity and the damn dumb lyrics or the embarassing "...and the girls all know" refrain towards the end, but I think it's great.

Also quite like "Dance pt.1".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

From that list, I'd go with "Gimmie Shelter" first, "Moonlight Mile" second and "Out Of Time" third. But it's close -- I really like all of those songs.

All time, my favorite Stones tune is "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)." It's somewhat overlooked because it came after the "Let It Bleed"/"Sticky Fingers"/"Exile" salad years, but I've always found it a nifty attempt by the Stones to do "Theme From Shaft." Mick Taylor's guitar work on this one has long been a favorite of mine, as have the horn charts.

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sympathy" for the film....

Gimme, i like more as the "Let the music play" remix thingy...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Out Of Time.

(Isn't it the only other song that has a marimba, apart from Under My Thumb? Even if it's not a Marimba, it's the one that's got the highest Brian Jones content, which makes it the most classic.)

(Though it was a close call with Mother's Little Helper)

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

sympathy!

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Shelter is good. But Streetfighting Man knocks all of them to the pavement, sneers, drops its aviators and struts off to a bar with a beautiful lay-dee on each arm where it proceeds to get seriously high. Honourable mention to Jack Flash.

Alex K (Alex K), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter by sooo many miles ..

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sympathy, with Moonlight Mile and Wild Horses nipping closely at its heels.

The best Stones song ever is the left channel of "The Latern".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Moonlight Mile

Dave Vinson (Gaughin), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Scientifically the best song there is Gimme Shelter, but Wild Horses gets my vote. Torn and Frayed is a very close third (both of those are Gram inspired compositions, i'm a huge Gram fan).

pete s, Monday, 15 December 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out of Time"

Burr (Burr), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I choose "Moonlight Mile."

My real favorite is a dead-heat tie between "Monkey Man" and "Jigsaw Puzzle."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sympathy. Loved it as a kid because I liked any record with a narrative - on the downside that meant I was also into Moonlight Shadow and Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. Also, all those shitty bands who say they're into the Stones (Black Crowes, Reef, Jet) rip off Satisfaction, Wild Horses etc but they never even try to make something as loose and dark and weird and funky and radical as Sympathy. What went wrong, Sir Mick, you crumpled old fool?

Shangri-La (Shangri-La), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

'Gimme Shelter'

But my fave is 'Sway' from 'Sticky Fingers'

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 15 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mother's Little Helper pisses over the rest of the list from a great height and it still isn't the best Stones song.

gerrynemo, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Satisfaction, which nobody else seems to have picked. Wow.

(It's probably not my favorite Stones song, but I forget what is. I'll definitely take most of their '60s stuff over most of their '70s stuff. Their most underrated LP is still *Emotional Rescue,* though.)

chuck, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sway" indeed.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

out of time

dan (dan), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Satisfaction". Then "Mothers Little Helper". Then "Wild Horses". Then "Gimme Shelter". Then "Love in Vain". Then "Sympathy". The others I don't know.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimmie Shelter

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter rox, u r all gay.

Seriously, few songs give me goosebumps the way that does.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be in the extreme minority and say "Moonlight Mile." I love that song, it;s so droney and strange and corny, in the best way. It's like "Daydream Nation," only better.

Though, not to be nitpicky but who really considers "Love In Vain" a Stones song???

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love In Vain" overall but "Torn and Frayed" from the list of originals.

bitter_buffalo (bitter_buffalo), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What J.Lu said above.....there are few songs that can conjure the gradual chills like the intro to "Gimme Shelter" does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

+ when it kicks in!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

those 2 reasons + the solo = why i pickt it

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

another "Gimme Shelter" vote here

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 22 December 2003 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sentimental favorite: "Out of Time."
Real favorite: "Gimme Shelter."
Favorite not included in the nine: "She Said Yeah."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 22 December 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

wild horses.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 22 December 2003 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Wild Horses--It's about one of my favs, Marianne Faithfull.

DaleK, Thursday, 25 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wild Horses for me.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Thursday, 25 December 2003 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Sympathy For the Devil by a nose over Gimmie Shelter.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 26 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Wild Horses. As of this week, at least.

Maciej, Friday, 26 December 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme Shelter.

But otherwise "Under My Thumb"

Nik (Nik), Friday, 26 December 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)
