Sally Oldfield's "Water Bearer": Classic or Dud?

I find myself playing this one more than any other album over the last few months...have people here heard it, and what do you think? Classic: A bountiful catch of beautiful folky songs (particularly "Wampum Song" and "Land in the Sun") which flow together quite well, and even some fairly crafty thematic development. Duds: 1) The Tolkien lyrics, made marginally more bearable than usual due to the fact that it's a woman singing it for once (not Geddy Lee), and also because here they sound almost Hawaiian. 2) The ridiculous tenor male singer who pops up (mercifully briefly) on two of the tracks; a very solo-Rick-Wakeman move.

Just a classic. i haven't find another album so beautiful and so perfect from other artists. try to listen WB when you go in a mountain or in a forest, lying in the grass.. watching the sun and the clouds...

Does it have "Mirrors" on it? That's the only song I know by her (one of Terry Wogan's "Pollyanna records").

I heard this album (Sally Olfield's "Water bearer" for the first time about 20 years ago. I used to ride on my motorcycle to a little town in the mountains on summer listenning to it. One time I lost it and have been looking for it ever since. If I could get a hold of this album I will buy a motorcycly and transport myself back to that era again. Can anyone help me?

Jose.

Bumped coz there was some talk on the Studio thread about her track Hide and Seek which was included on a mix by Studio.

Hide and Seek comes from her second LP which I haven't got my hands on yet* but I got her first "Water Bearer" and it's great; like a Angloid Linda Perhacs mixed with an Italian horror soundtrack (not suprisingly since they copped a lot've moves from her bro Mike, who I'm guessing produced this). There's some good proto-Balearic bongo action and some quasi-disco synth.

Recommeded for noise boarders and balearic/beardo thread posters.

*coz hardly anyone on slsk has it compared to her other LPs--maybe a good sign?

her second LP, Easy, is well, easy to find on the blogs. i listened to it this morning and didn't love it. "Hide & Seek" is pretty great, but the rest is kinda eh. a bit too elfish folky. her voice kinda reminds me of early Kate Bush, and some of the music is sorta tropical Shuggie Otis. it's produced really nicely, and the guitar solos on it are great, but i dunno, just wasn't my thing.

The rest of it is phenomenal, forward-looking and beautiful and a ton of fun as long as you can tune out the Tolkein lyrics.
