Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the helium diva wail. runner-up: the waw-ing keyboard riff on Krome & Time's "The Slammer"

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

- xylobass in garage tracks eg. DND's "Pick It Up (Dub)" or UGC's "Mic Tribute (UGC Remix)"
- that spectral valkyrie wail that appears in heaps of jungle tracks from lots of Goldie's to the first track on Dom & Roland's Industry
- detuned and *slowed down* Amen break samples eg. the marvellous fill rhythms in Doc Scott's "The Unofficial Ghost"
- the sludgy bass in Basement Jaxx's "Yo Yo" and the different kind of sludgy bass in "I Luv U"
- the hesitant grunt "uh-uh---uh!" in heaps of jungle records eg. Goldie's "Saint Angel"
- the heart seizure electro riff in the Ewan Pearson remix of "Perspex Sex"
- the "Why?!?" from "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare" as used in Acen tracks.
- acid in anything!

I think jungle is particularly suited to this because of the use and reuse of mnemonic little samples in a hundred different contexts ('ardkore by comparison was *slightly* more "musical" in its use of oscillator riffs and keyboard vamps)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the hi-hats in stardancer by red planet

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A la early Orbital, obv.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the "church bell bred with a modem getting sucked into the sky" sound, as starring in hyper-on experience's "lords of the null lines (foul play remix)" & a bunch of other tracks I can't currently recall.

etc, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the synthesizer sound, or maybe the drum machine sound..

pete from the street, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

filter-house filters used not on disco samples but on hip-hop clips
marching-band 909 snares and hats
extremely fake "scratching" (afx's 808 state remix, crescendolls, etc)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There's an old RA-X track that sounds like this huge, acidic remake of New Order's "Temptation" (maybe it's "Mesh" or "Everything's Gone Green," I'm crap with titles) that's been remixed by Fennesz. Fucking massive.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

as I'm traveling the tunnel of light, ascending into heaven, I fully expect to hear filtered e-piano stabs, shuffly 909 hi-hat action, and pitchbendy juno strings.

tylero, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually , Italian house pianos are fantastic, aren't they?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmm italo-piano bueno

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

robin (robin), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that spectral valkyrie wail that appears in heaps of jungle tracks from lots of Goldie's to the first track on Dom & Roland's Industry

I've always heard that as a looped section of the Loleatta Holloway 'Love Sensation' acapella that was used by Black Box. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

snare drums that go "pap" instead of "kack" or "shwock"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

djembe loops

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

underworld synths

yes - is there a sound that defines Underworld more than the warm, epic, tense introductory pads at the start of 'King Of Snake'?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.K.E.'s reverbed 909 (?) claps.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably those U.R. strings a la 'Final Frontier, 'Journey To The Martian Polar Cap'.

Obviously all acidsounds and every rave hoover sound.

And I love it when tracks have that cross-fading stutter.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

chainsaw at the start of that morrissey track

kevin brady (groeuvre), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a great thread.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interpreting "noise" as "sound", I guess:

1)DX basslines.
2)Larry Heard's voice
3)Larry Heard's chord changes
4)The 808
5)The 909
