TS: Magnetic Fields vs. The Aluminum Group

Near-precious, almost-disposable pop with surprising weight once you think about it. I think Magnetic Fields does it with too much fashionable sadness. Aluminum Group keeps it slick, smart, and a little mean-spirited. So that's where I am on the issue.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and More Happyness is available January 20, or now from Wishing Tree records. :)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

do i really have to choose? i love them both, and to my ears they're so different!

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, they're very differnet to the ears, but conceptually similar I think.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

really? i see the aluminum group coming from soft-pop and heading for a more experimental approach, whereas the magnetic fields come from indie-pop and have a poppier approach to their songwriting.
plus AG are filed under 70's in my book, and MF fit better under 80's.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, you could comfortably place them both in the 60's. Any way you want it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If the MGs are actually "sad" it isn't fashionable, and if they just sound it Merritt's being a dick. Don't hear the disposable thing.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But you make me wanna try the AG, I must say.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the MGs were great, they had the best rhythm section around at the time...

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Merritt's being a dick

I think that's what I was trying to say without saying it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well you should've, I adore them and I did

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But you make me wanna try the AG, I must say.

Yay! Tempting as it may be, don't start with the Jim O'Rourke-produced album. Start with Happyness.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but... the jim o'rourke-produced album (pedals) is GREBT!!!

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, good question. I was trying to figure out recently why I didn't like the Magnetic Fields as much as some of my friends, and so I came up with, "Maybe I just don't like low male vocals," and "Maybe I don't like the 'cleverness' of his lyrics," and then I stopped and said, "Christ, but I LOVE the Aluminum Group." I think I'm just a sucker for the lounge palette, though. Merritt's perhaps too lo-fi for me. (Btw, what do you think of More Happyness, Kenan?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

69 Love Songs is a bit of a sacred cow for me, it helped me a lot through my worst-ever-breakup. I like it for the same reason as the film Swingers-- when you're single it sounds reassuringly bitter, when you're together with someone it's kinda romantic-in-a-non-vomitous-way.
Thanks for the AG recommendation, though, I'll definitely check that out.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I only heard the Magnetic Fields after seeing them (ahem) close for the Aluminum Group a couple of years ago. Liked them, and got "69 Love Songs", and liked that. But still, I'm more partial to the AG.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

well, they're friends and all, aren't they?
you can like both bands, it's not a blur vs. oasis thing

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true, Joan. I do think Kenan is right in that there are some similarities, though (and we've actually gotten this far without referencing homosexuality) -- and so it's interesting to see who people prefer. (Not like some ridiculous Taking Sides from a few months ago: Stereolab vs. Queens of the Stone Age.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what about heavenly vs andrew wk?

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

magnetic fields, because they're way more catchy.

and, um, heavenly in a cakewalk.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

aluminum group are pretty bland, too well pressed and mannered, don't stereolab call them the gay brothers? magnetic fields are great though it seems fashionable to disown them a bit. colette carter sounds s bit like the magnetic fields circa 'wayward bus' but with some beats, it's odd since they look like ashford and simpson.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Pedals" but "Happyness" went in one ear and out the other without touching the sides. V. dull I thought.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it had great songs. Like the aptly named "Pop," which has this brilliant bouncy little chorus, and is all about a guy whose friends are all abandoning him because he won't stop doing drugs. Deliciousness.

(Btw, what do you think of More Happyness, Kenan?)

I like it. It stretches out a bit more than Happyness. Has more going on in the corners. Very nice.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

More on Happyness: the two things I most easily compare it to are Everything But the Girl's Amplified Heart and Steely Dan. So right there, you gotta know I love that record.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh... check it out, Chicagoans. AG playing tomorrow night at 7pm at the Apple store on Michigan Ave. So then after the set, you can play with expensive toys!

http://www.apple.com/retail/northmichiganavenue/

Scroll down to "music nights."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that! I think my brother may be going (he sorta knows John). Maybe I'll try to go, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The first AG song I heard was "Impress Me", an excellent song, and it set the bar too high. The rest of Pedals was a disappointment.

But I don't like the Magnetic Fields at all. Just a schtick band.

adam michel (adam michel), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is the indie rocker love for ag due to their connections to tortoise?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 19 December 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly. they do very little for me.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. I loved 'em before they worked with Tortoise. I was working at the Minty Fresh label when they released Plano, and I was already a fan of loungey stuff like Stereolab, Komeda, the Cardigans, High Llamas, Combustible Edison, Steely Dan, Burt Bacharach, and Antonio Carlos Jobim -- so it fit right in. (And if I was into all of those bands, it was probably because I grew up playing showtunes and jazz standards on the piano!)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 December 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And I grew up listening to show tunes and jazz standards. I have a soft place in my heart for that shit. Makes me feel like Christmas all year round.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder sometimes about how some of our primary, almost subconscious listening experiences shape our tastes. I know I'm always going to be a sucker for stuff that's "jazzy," for lack of a better word, and I can't help but think the fact that my dad listened to a lot of jazz around the house has something to do with it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be a different person without those early listening experiences. I remember the day dad brought home Thriller like it was yesterday. I thought that Paul McCartney song sucked then, and I still do now. There was no Prince in my house because mom wouldn't have approved, but dad had a cassette of Purple Rain hidden in the glove box of the car like some dirty secret. Is there anything better to a 7 year old than that which is forbidden? I would sneak the cassette out sometimes and listen to it with headphones, then sneak it back in the car before morning. It was better than touching myself.

*whew* This is pretty off topic.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(And again, my math is off. I was at least 10 when I discovered Prince.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you were touching yourself when you were 10?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a whoooole other thread. Whole other board, really.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I was about to ask the same question.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"For God's sake, Alvey, even Freud speaks of a latency period!"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My parents were both huge Sinatra fans so I grew up with him in my blood and I still think he's God.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

magnetic fiields vs. aluminum group? goodness gracious!

I remember the afternoon I found the wayward bus and distant plastic trees. oh my god! who did I rush over to play it for? frankie, of course. we were both so floored, moved and excited.

so my answer is kind of one-sided, but I love frankie's songs and spirit so much. what can a brother say? I love them both, the fields and the other half of the aluminum group.

the apple store, by the way, was fantastic! It was perfect. we performed with ipods and sang our little songs while we navigated through our website, exploring the cool new features, projected on a huge screen behind us. who could ask for a more perfect set? It was like self-improvement seminar meets aluminum group with powerpoint presentation. I loved every second of it. I just wish paris hilton had been there. we're going back to apple store in feburary 2004.

check out our new website, go to:

thealuminumgroup.net

thanks for thinking about us. It means so much. wait till you hear little happyness, the follow-up to more happyness. we've spread our wings a little wider. frank's songs are killer! headphones, milligram of happiness and beautiful eyes. It's been a beautiful week. happy holidays. johnny navin/the aluminum group

john navin, Sunday, 21 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I have your autograph?

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 22 December 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes! What a turn up. I think it's only fair we summon the Ghost of Christmas Gloom, Prof Merritt, to give the other side.

(Pam and Gail send their love, JN).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 22 December 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

JN, if you're still reading, thanks for the lovely show on Friday. :)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 December 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps this gets me in trouble but ... Magnetic Fields, that's just sorta gay. The Aluminimum Group, now that's really, really gay.

Chris O., Monday, 22 December 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn near fabulous.

Mr. Navin, you are loved.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 22 December 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god! I think I could get addicted to this! mark just asked me how I found this site. seriously, i was looking for something else to link to our website and saw this, which, of course, is very interesting to me, as I'm sure, you're all very interesting people with wide interests and lots to say. and you're nice! but be mean, too. It's all good!

kenan, you are a very special person to frankie and I. you've been such a support. I look forward to meeting you someday. and when we meet, wherever that might be, well, I'm just going to hug you, that's all.

london lee, can I autograph your panties? a t-shirt? can I have my friend jason make you a t-shirt (or panty if you prefer) for me to sign? he also has been sewing vinyl vaginas, which we sold as merch for a show at the hideout and at the fez in nyc. you're a girl, right? if not, I'll have him make a jock.

jaymc, the show was kind of good, wasn't it? sort of funny. there was magic all around. so many lovely folks turned up. sheila brought us homemade cookies, which we devoured on the spot. pete took us out for supper right after the show, across the street to ralph lauren's restaurant (so christmassie). gabriel and jessica brought frankie a spanish telanovella glossy magazine (frank's adddicted to the spanish soaps- I could only sit through mari mar and betty la fea, betty the ugly, they're all pigmailian myths, my fair lady, etc., etc.). what else?

michael, be nice. stephen's a sweetheart to be sure. my god, the pressure that boy is under, our modern day irving b. frank and I don't have to worry about such things. we always get lumped with the cheese from the 60's and 70's. you know, fluffy stuff. it's all good. but if you ever have a chance to get stephen on a one-to-one, there's no one funnier or more brilliant. he stayed at frankie's house once, claudia at mine. It was during the 69 sessions. at that moment he wanted to do 100. could you imagine? anyway, he was staring at himself in the mirror, and frank was like, "what's wrong? wrinkles? get over it, stephen!" we had a fun weekend. we took them on a tour of chicago, but not meis or sullivan or calder or miro or anything of the sort. we took them on a special tour, of mansard roofs we like in the city. oh, it's silly. we're obsessed with that style. but stephen's not so grim, or if he appears so, it's because so many people (believe me, I heard them) fawn, flaunt, all the "f" words, all over him. frank walked into his dressing room once and almost puked. but he deserves it. he's a national treasure, just like paris hilton.

chris, why are we more gay than merritt? because there are two of us?

so kids, looks like I'll check up on you every now and again. It's fun, and thanks for having me. I will not go on and on. promise. but I will try to answer honestly to the best of my abilities.

does paris check this site out? poor thing. i want to be her spersonal assistant. seriously. I can type.

we're in the studio all day tomorrow with john mcentire. can I tell you a secret? maybe we might be styling tortoise for a photo shoot. we've been kind of laughing about it. bettina said, "okay john (me, not mcentire), navin eye for the tortoise guy, what do you think?" I was like, "girl! I've only been asking to style tortoise and sea and cake for years!" not that they need it, but could you imagine what fun we'll have with the guys? "okay, doug, try to smile, just a little. that's it!" of course, johnny herdon (he's expecting his first baby!) is perfect, so handsome and sweet just the way he is, and his hair is all kind of hippy now. mcentire? how can you improve on that? he's so photogenic, such a handsome man. jeff is perfect, too, with his beautiful hair and eyes. bitney is the one who always smiles inside. he's the happiest camper of them all I think. thank god for bitney! we all need his joy. stay tuned.

I've gone on too long. I'm completely exhausted having worked all week in the studio with mac and frank, and launching the website, so forgive me. forgive me all!!!!!!

merriest christmas days and chanukah days, light all the candles, one by one, with children, let them light the candles. oh! it's perfect, isn't it? sometimes we get it right. and then happiest new year to you all. not little happyness (that's for frankie and me), but great, big, wonderful happiness to you and yours.

johnny

john navin, Monday, 22 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

John, was completely just kidding about that; there's a lushness to your music that exceeds Merritt's sound. He's going on charm; you have cleaner, prettier arrangements. No offense meant. Happyness is a cool record; I once referred to it to a friend as "69 Love Songs in French ticklers."

And who knows, maybe two is better than one. :-)

Chris O., Monday, 22 December 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Navin Eye:

http://giganticmag.com/images/navineye.jpg

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that McEntire? He's lookin' sharp!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He is now.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

so we're a merritt baby french tickler band? it's all good!

I started laughing so hard when I saw this! you're brilliant!!!!! gosh, I hope mcentire doesn't, no, I hope he sees this. It's so sweet. I was like, "that's not frankie!"

"It's macky!"

you're hysterical.

you're wonderful.

you made my night!!

johnny

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so it was kenan who put together that photo. I'm still not used to the signals here, like gray lines, which mean someone else's entry. kenan, will you design an aluminum group record someday? since you're a wiz at photoshop?

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm no wiz. But I can't exactly say no to that offer, now can I?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has caused much love. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ned, it's all about love, isn't it? you said it right, especially in these days of orange alerts. who wants a poem? I do. I do. this poem will appear somewhere on little happyness, probably in print only. I send it out, as my christmas gift. It's called, the proud towers. It's the first and only piece I've written about the world trade disaster. I'm afraid, but also eager to hear criticism.

but have I completely fucked up this discussion booth/thing/website? I think I have and I'm sorry. It's just kind of nice, knowing you're out there.

the proud towers

as in paradise lost, let us conjure up a scene
for you know as I, just what these towers mean.
Icarus takes off, he is proud and he is free,
but in the chaos, he is drowning there at sea.

somethings seem ordered like they're right where they should be.
I cut an olive branch off of an olive tree,
the oldest olive branch off of the oldest tree-
off of a tetrach's plant, a redwood by the sea.

something so simple is still unknown to you and me.
it's not the towers for we know just what they mean.
it is a theory about strings we cannot see-
and is a consolation like that of philosophy.

something has happened.  yes, it happened on the streets
of Pandemonium, our capital- paradise retreats
to where? and when? but we know why
Icarus takes off, how he must die.

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

but have I completely fucked up this discussion booth/thing/website?

Oh, goodness no. You're refreshing uncynical, compared to the rest of us, and we're glad to have you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

McEntire's lucky I didn't find this photo first:

http://giganticmag.com/images/Neg01b.jpg

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny, seriously, we LOVE having you here. "It's all good." One of the first times I saw you perform (it's been 9 times now, I think!) was at a Borders in Oak Brook, Illinois, of all places, back in '98. I got up from my seat to get a drink between songs, and you complimented my shirt. And then you talked to a little girl about her Pocahontas outfit. And that's how I knew you were an all-right fellow, a real good egg, on top of the fantastic music. Well, that, and I think you and Frankie are hilarious on stage; you always make me beam. So please, stick around. :)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mark just asked me how I found this site.

Hey, do you mean my brother Mark?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc, you're like a pillow of sweetness! like snuggles, you're snugglie fresh. pochahantas! I think I said, "come her little pocha, pocha-hant-as!" who could forget her? I l-o-v-e the babies, especially when we're whoring the aluminum group for record sales at the borders bookstores, there's always 1,000 kids around. "we make wonderful a christmas gift!" I know you heard me say that.

I remember that afternoon, and so do you. how funny! life is funny. I'll never leave you, I promise. unless, you ask me to.

mark cunningham is who I mean.

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

right kenan, but could you put mcentire right between my ipod? you're such a wiz.

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

mark cunningham is who I mean.

Yep, that's my brother.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like this photo of frank and I?

It's from the morehappyness series. I know it's kind of over-the-top, but didn't sandro do a good job? frankie and I styled it. the dog is sasha, frankie's landlord's dog, the ipod's mine. the sweaters are of course another generous, wonderful gift from our friend, one of our oldest , fabio, at prada (names, names, names). birthday presents!!! we opened them the same day. they're so soft and rich. knitwear. love it! he sent three ties for each of us, and shoes and shirts. can you stand it? we used them for this shoot. we didn't wear the sweaters in london two weeks ago, because they're so warm. we sweat too much on stage. I bought an argyle (it's everywhere this season) cashmere for me and a powder blue one for frank from brooks brothers. we performed with a card table set up- the new set design. I love the card table when I can sit across from frank and sing (or fiddle with a pencil or my maker's mark or the set-list or the ipod. don't touch! frank cues the songs!)

I came up with the underwear idea, and frankie came up with us kissing on a motorcycle. we're happiest with these photos. my girlfriend, susan, loved when we modeled the underwear idea in my apartment. you never know.

tortoise, well, we're researching old photographs as we speak, avedon, etc., etc., but what I said to john was, we'll shop for what we like and make it modern. It has to be modern. john mac has many ideas. he's brilliant and has an artistic eye.

what am I going on about?

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Something about Fabio at Prada. It sounds like you're making that up, but I know you're not.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, I love the photos. And I envy the sweaters.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

kenan, you have to know frankie and I don't make stuff up, except in our songs. fabio, zambie as I love to call him, is an old friend who happens to be design director at prada. we're so proud of him! he's come so far. his story is great. no one works as hard as fabio. he would blow your mind. people think fashion is all glamour. step into the prada laboratories and you'll see what goes on. It's like willy wonka! without the umpa-lumpas.

I mentioned fabio because: 1) so proud of our friend, 2) so great is our friend, look at the shoes! look at everything at prada, and 3) he's our guy, he's always supported us and cared about what we've done since day one.

kenan, you have to know that fabio organized the first aluminum group show in milano in 1987 when we weren't aluminum group but still bleakhouse. he got us a show in the most historically cool discoteque in milan, killer plastic. nicola, the owner of the club, booked us then and booked us llast spring. how happy we were to retiurn to plastic 13 years later, thanks to fabio. thanks to nicola.

he's so important to frankie and I. he's our brother.

john navin, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Obligatory joke post: Magnetic items have no effect on aluminum, therefore Aluminum Group has the advantage.

Okay, carry on.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at DSW the other day and saw some great Prada shoes--sparkly purple and pink men's shoes!--for only $60. (i've been trying in vain to find a pic) too bad they were a size too big. i don't know if the aluminum group would rock them though--perhaps not as tasteful as the ones modelled above (love the white ankle socks!), but amazingly interesting none the less. also had some great Miu Miu shoes, too. Yeah, Prada! someday when I'm rich...
