"I feel that I'm cheating myself and this record if I don't listen to it straight through, without interruption."

This is in relation to Roger A's thread, and I think the title says it all.

Here are two of mine:

Sightings, "Absolutes"
Pavement, "Wowee Zowee"

I have WZ on vinyl and can never make it through becuase of the deeply unsatisfying THREE SIDES. I usually turn it off early, even if I'm enjoying it, cos I know that i'll somehow be let down by it.

The only record I would put in thie cateogory is 4 violins by tony conrad. I have only done it twice. worthwhile tho

some records I can listen to in one go. others I need to take my time with so i listen to 3-4 tracks then stop.

concentration does go down over time anyway so it makes sense to listen to records in bits.

I dunno... I usually don't worry about what I owe my records. They never judge me.

The last three Talk Talk albums.

My original answer on Roger's thread is my answer for this one: Mr. Bungle's California. I think society is cheating themselves with not including this in the "canon". I own and love lots of albums almost as much, but none of them I feel deserve it so much as this one. That should bother me, but it doesn't.

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet. Though it's not something I listen to often. More like once every couple years.

It's true of Talk Talk if anything, but sometimes I just listen to 'After the Flood' on repeat, honestly

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely, the Mekons', "Journey to the End of the Night."

This is probably my favorite record by the band, and despite a couple of not-very-engaging songs ("Powers & Horror," "Neglect"), this is one of very few records of mine that is consistently accorded start-to-finish treatment.

i listen to pretty much every cd/record i play straight through, even the 12" singles/remix records where sometimes there is little variation.

Sometimes I isolate "New Grass", and am vaguelly planning a video project involving it, which would involve a prolonged engagement with it out of context. Much as I love it though, I think those openign bars work better after the tumult of the previous tracks.

It's NOT normal to always listen to albums straight through?! I rarely if ever do it any other way.

the last album I put on and just sat in my room and listened to from start to finish was ill communication by the beastie boys. mostly because it was a big deal for me when I was 13 and its a nice little time warp.

new order's technique also works in this category, but it benefits by being under 40 minutes long..

wow. I was thinking the same thing! Ive only done it 3 times (the newer, longer version, not the LP) but for some reason I have to listen to the whole thing each time I put it on.. and no, Im usually not the type of person who can play with a slinky for hours on end either.

early Amon Duul II.

"Wowee Zowee"? I feel the opposite. that's Pavement's trademark shuffle mode album if they ever had one.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" doesn't really have any skippable songs. There are a zillion other examples, but that's one I've been listening to a lot lately. Never skip a song, but frequently play "King of Carrot Flowers (part 1)" and "Two Headed Boy" twice.

Almost every Mountain Goats album needs to be listened to all the way through. Especially the last three or four.

To tell the truth, I pretty much always listen to albums all the way through. It's probably comes from being raised on LPs.
