What's the Priest's best? My roommate just threw on Metal Works, and we're both too blown away right now to think critically.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell Bent For Leather, no, wait....yeah, it's too hard.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Helion/Electric Eye"

Actually, "Hell Bent for Leather" is a damn fine choice as well. As would be "Breakin' the Law," but I'm standing by my selection.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God. No band has ever ruled so hard. Let's see...

Electric Eye
Killing Machine (the song)
Hell Bent for Leather (the song)
Painkiller (nutty solos from both guitarists!!)
Deceiver (silly but great)
Take on the World (football scarves aloft!)
Delivering the Goods
Breakin' the Law

So many of these tracks are from 'Hellbent for Leather' (aka 'Killing Machine'), where they had such a great sound that was not a million miles from a heavier, glammier AC/DC, and I'm bummed because I recently broke my copy of that CD taking it out of its case. Must buy a new one, like the music nerd I am.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought that the best thing about one was the way they changed their songwriting and production sound so radically from one record to the next, without actually ever sounding like a different band.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad someone mentioned Painkiller, that whole album is pretty amazing, especially for latter-day Priest...that song "Hell Patrol" OWNS!!!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And 'Leather Rebel' really does it in the preposterous lyric department. God bless Rob Halford and his ridiculous over-the-top lyrics, sung with piercing gravitas in complete seriousness. That guy is the Ralf Hutter of heavy metal.

"Oh God. No band has ever ruled so hard. Let's see..." - No post on ILM has ever been so OTM!

Let me add the following to the venerable selections above:
- The Rage
- Victim of Changes

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Take on the World (football scarves aloft!)
You just made me really happy, as that one and United always reminds me of crap footie songs, and no one ever agrees with me.

Anyways, my favorites are Victim Of Changes and Painkiller.
Funny how the band's had their best albums near the start and near the end of their career (well, ok, the career might still go for a long time)

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 18 December 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Iced Earth, not Iced World.
Best song: Painkiller or Screaming for Vengeance

Cacaman Flores, Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Let us also praise Metal Gods and Riding on the Wind.

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The one and only - Victim of changes -

but also
Dreamer deceiver (Perhaps I should point out that Sad wings of destiny
is the greatest album of all times)
Killing machine
The complete B-side of Sin after sin
Run of the mill
Heading out to the highway
...

Sad Wings, Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Victim of Changes seconded (or thirded or ...)

Runners-up:

Better by You Better than Me
Hell Bent for Leather
Breaking the Law

Well "Victim of Changes" is probably my ultimate favourite, but I've always loved "Dying To Meet You." Early Priest had such a great guitar sound...

Hmmm I also love "Dissident Aggressor" as well... *sigh*

Wrapped tight around me
Like a second flesh hot skin
Cling to my body
As the ecstasy begins

Your wild vibrations
Got me shooting from the hip
Crazed and insatiable let rip

Eat me alive

Sounds like an animal
Panting to the beat
Groan in the pleasure zone
Gasping from the heat

Gut-wrenching frenzy
That deranges every joint
I'm gonna force you at gun point

To eat me alive

Bound to deliver as
You give and I collect
Squealing impassioned as
The rod of steel injects

Lunge to the maximum
Spread-eagled to the wall
You're well equipped to take it all

So eat me alive

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 19 December 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Victim of Changes." No question. But I like "Green Manilishi" if only for the Fleetwood Mac connection, which I find infinitely amusing.

M Deeds, Friday, 19 December 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Yeah, recently been getting into 'Rapid Fire', a song which just flashed by for about 15 listens before I really began to appeciate its titanium qualities (aw, come on! This is a Judas Priest thread! Hyperbole, cliche aand panegyria are not only acceptable, but in the spirit of the occasion)... the thing is, they've written so many great, great songs, but never made the mistake of releasing a perfect album, unlike say Kraftwerk or Slayer. And so, there remains work for them to do, there still being a goal to achieve, or potential unfulfilled. Moral: write wonderful songs, but never write a perfect album.

I think, really, it has to be "The Helion/Electric Eye', if only because, as well as being a perfectly constructed song, it presages the future of music, which is techno-metal.

Today, the Judas Priest song that rules the most is: Metal Gods.

It's hilarious, of course (laser noizes! funny vocal processing! mechagodzilla!), but you can't laugh because you're too busy ROCKING.

Bonus points for borrowing from Wall-era Floyd while pointing toward Metallica.

Man, Pantera WISHES they were capable of producing something like Painkiller. But that song is so truly, deeply weird. It slips in and out of three decades of metal completely organically, and Halford's falsetto singing that "what key do YOU think we're in?" melody is more terrifying than any Rollins or Cookie Monster imitator modern metal has ever produced. It also contains the most gorgeous modulation in the history of music, just before the second solo.

Reading this thread inspired me to put on Metal Works '73-'93. This band is so great that a 2CD 32 track collection (really '77 to '90) of their most famous years can still miss several important moments. (like "Green Manalishi" or "United")

Still "Hellion/Electric Eye", "Victim of Changes (live)", and "Painkiller" is a nice way to start.

My favorite stuff is still the British Steel, Point of Entry, era that still sounds closer to what I thought punk was then than other metal of the time.

Is it me? am I the winner here? (james k polk), Sunday, 24 May 2009 06:23 (sixteen years ago)

"Exciter" was THE song that changed the course of heavy metal history forever. Shocked that it wasn't mentioned on this thread. Obviously the commenters made a distinction between "JP track they love" and "JP track which CHANGED THE COURSE OF HEAVY METAL".

Because obv 'Exciter' did the latter. Nobody had sounded so fast & nimble before. Les Binks helped. the whole "Stained Class" lp is just a marvel

DREAMER DECEIVER

Matt #2, Sunday, 24 May 2009 09:21 (sixteen years ago)

I made the intro arpeggio of Beyond the Realms of Death into my ringtone. Every time my phone rings, it plays a song that made someone shoot their face off. I love that.

For me, the first 4 albums are head and shoulders above the rest. But British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, and Defenders of the Faith are also very very strong albums, albeit from a different era and mindset.

If you haven't seen the Old Grey Whistle Test footage on Youtube, you should right away.

That footage is all about eye contact. Plus maybe also KK's cool hat.

wasn't "Better By You, Better Than Me" the song that "inspired" those kids to kill themselves?

Yeah -- a song Priest didn't even write (it's a Spooky Tooth cover, if memory serves).

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 24 May 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

anybody ever try to play the Spooky Tooth version backwards?

henry s, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, it turns into a song where a girl is trying to persuade her worst enemy that she is not the appropriate person to explain to her ex-boyfriend her reasons for leaving the navy.

moley, Monday, 25 May 2009 03:11 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed on Ripper. I mean, Island of Domination is on the same album. And we don't even want to get into later era stuff like Jawbreaker, Eat Me Alive, Love Bites, or Take These Chains.

***

I'm always repping for the song Sinner, especially because of Simon Phillip's amazing drum breakdown in the middle. There are more soulful solos out there (particularly Dreamer Deceiver), but the drumming on Sinner has the best "feel" they ever got.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 10:12 (sixteen years ago)

I saw em at Hammersmith when they were touring Screaming for Vengeance. They brought over the US arena show, which obviousl.y didn't fit into the Odeon. The opening of the arena show had the Marshall stacks underneath the drums opening up for Halford to ride out on his Harley to the lip of the stage. At Hammersmith the distance from stacks to lip of the stage was only a few yards, so instead of riding out, Halford was pushed out by a couple of roadies. It rather diminished the impact. Even so - and I was at the end of the back row in the circle, literally the worst seat in the house - Priest were terrific.

ithappens, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

the drumming on Sinner has the best "feel" they ever got.

I totally agree. You know sometimes the first time you hear a track, the groove is so good you just freeze in the middle of whatever you're doing until the song finishes?
