Courtney Love - Mono (new single)

I'm a huge fan of Courtney Love, not only as a singer/bandleader, but as an actress and media personality. I know a lot of people don't like her, and have never liked her; fair enough. And I don't want to start the thread off, or even start the buzz on her new single off, on a negative note, but after just listening to her new single "Mono" a couple times I must confess disappointment. At first I thought it would end up something like "Celebrity Skin" in its trashiness, but sadly I'm just hearing a lot of flailing about. No real hook, no discernable band sound, and little of Love's curdled charm. I have no idea if she's worked with any collaborators/'song doctors' on it, but I'd guess not. While on the one hand it's cool to stay punky and raw, etc., I was hoping in her maturation as an artist, and as her debut single under her own name, we'd end up with something more... substantial than this. Maybe it's just where I'm at personally, but how about something sexier? Catchier? Maybe even some beats or something? It just sounds like a throwaway at a time when I needed her to really deliver.

Maybe I'll grow to love it, maybe the rest of the album will be better, maybe it's too late at night for me to be making judgements on anything.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I haven't heard it, but... I actually like the sound of it from your descriptions. The fact that she's not "trying too hard" (which was a great fault of Celebrity Skin - oh the catchiness! oh the production! oh the wow-factor constantly on!) might make this a more enjoyable thing for me.

But we shall see.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard the streaming version, but I like it an awful lot.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"LICENSE FAILED
Sorry, this file is not available for download to your country"

I'm already disappointed :/

Sami (Sami), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I got that message to on the download. Hopefully nice people will be sharing it elsewhere.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This was going to be on Poptones, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

was. i think it's coming out on Virgin now?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

its a different version than the poptones one. the poptones one was much better. :- (

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i dig this! it sounds a lot like "celebrity skin" but i can think of worse songs to rip off.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

now i wanna hear kelly osbourne cover it.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to it now... Sounds great...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like it. The first half of the song sounded more appealing than the second half, but that may be because I'm tired. I'm curious to hear more.

(And Japan is another country where we can't download the track.)

John Fredland (jfredland), Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe anyone (outside of Alan McGee, who'll do ANYTHING for a cheap press angle) would even think of signing Courtney Love, never mind going as far as releasing a record. how did Virgin allow themselves to get carried away so far with this? it should've stayed oin Poptones where it could fester in obscurity with the rest of their artists.

is there not already just too much damn STUFF clogging up the world without this too?

lego legg, Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

someone need therapy!

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

when it comes to stuff that clogs up the world i'd take this single over ilx any day.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

its not that bad. i preferred the earlier recording. but yeah i hope its a hit.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

therapy?
why? because i made a comment about your buddy Alan McGee?
or because i questioned the quality of output from Ms Love?

either way, *feh*.

lego legg, Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what went wrong with the Poptones deal anyway?

isn't this record already 2 years overdue?

colin r, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

or because i questioned the quality of output from Ms Love?

You didn't say anything about the actual song.

I like "Mono" a lot, it has a big tune and a fuck-you attitude and Courtney can still pull both those things off very well.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"You didn't say anything about the actual song"

sorry. i meant to.
its exactly what one would imagine it to be.
that is, lacking in any tune in any 'real' sense of the word (its got the Courtney Love version of a tune though. you know, 'that' one. the one where she sort of slurs and meanders around it in an attempt to make it different from the last time she used it).
and the lyrics are terrible.
exactly the sort of meaningless bluster a 45year old multimillionaire with a vague recollection of 'punk rock' would produce.

lego, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, i think it's got a pretty clear melody and hook. she's just not singing that tunefully. which is fine, "tunefulness" isn't a prerequisite for rock singing.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

she's better at "tunefulness" than marissa marchant!!

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha
jody you rock.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Courtney's never done anything 'tunefully'!

I love the way the guitars pund on the line "so much better than you" which is of course the crux of the whole song. I don't think the lyrics are bad at all, admittedly I haven't listened to the verses very closely but the sentiment of the chorus is quite fantastic.

lego did you like Courtney when she WASN'T a 45-year-old multimillionaire or are you just using her success as a stick to beat her with?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

success has nothing to do with it.
my point was more about the fact that it sounds like a record by someone TRYING to sound angry.
its sounds weak and spineless.

lego, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a huge fan of Courtney Love, not only as a singer/bandleader, but as an actress and media personality

I can sorta understand being a fan of her music (though I think it's crap) and I can vaguely understand one's appreciation for her acting (though I think she's hugely overrated in that capacity), but why would anyone champion Courtney for her endeavors as a "media personality"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

marissa > courtney x 1000

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Song rocks. It's better than anything off the new Pink. And I like the new Pink.

spittle (spittle), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

marissa > courtney x 1000
-- Pashmina (pashmin...), December 18th, 2003.

i think that - though - because marissa is not a celebrity i am growing tired of her. i prefer her more undergroud werks.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

*because marissa is not a celebrity i am growing tired of her. i prefer her more undergroud werks*

can we have that translated from its original gibberish please?

monstorio, Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, i really wish i could hear the original recording of this song because the only problem i have with it is the production, really. it sounds too expensive. i was hoping for a warmer live through this-kind of sound, which courtney herself talked about aiming for.

wellyeahwowmyname, Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

but why would anyone champion Courtney for her endeavors as a "media personality"?

makes perfect sense to me. she's been manipulating the media and her own image in the media since the beginning. it's impressive to me how she inserts herself into all kinds of things, for better or worse. she's like her own mad publicist.

anyway, the song sounds good but Sean's right, there are absolutely no hooks to speak of. I had heard it was going to sound like "City Slang" and it sort of does, but again there's nothing memorable.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a huge hook! In the chorus! It's almost as big as the "Celebrity Skin" hook!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was pretty "meh" as they say....but did anyone else think the first part is a knock-off of the old MTV News "You Hear it First" guitar riff?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean the Megadeth 'Peace Sells But Who's Buying' bassline?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but they used to use that too....it was a distorted guitar riff that MTV used alot...it went like dah....da,da...da,da,da,da – dum, dah, dum

*realizes the futiility of trying to "sing" a guitar riff over ILM*

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, the *other* one.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I read a thing with her the other day (an ID article maybe 1 year old) where they had her old quote about 'If you're a girl, you're fragile, if you're a guy, you're a genius, girl is a harpie, guy is tortured', etc etc. These are good insights but then on the facing pages she's topless in a few different kind of lingerie. The really courageous thing, it seems to me, would be to act on her good insights into the problems facing women - to really make the personal political. But then you would have to settle, perhaps, for poverty and obscurity and perhaps that's not so wise. She faces difficult choices.

Amity (Amity), Thursday, 18 December 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

she's been manipulating the media and her own image in the media since the beginning.

Seems the other way around now, though, as she's constantly entangled in one or another embarassing hijiinx (from child custody flaps through the infamous Q cover).

She's pathetic, as is her music.

one month passes...
Revive.

Rolling Stone pans her new album, and I'm starting to think what I always suspected was mostly an act (the unpredictable behavior, disheveled appearance, etc) is actually indicative of drug addiction and/or a completely unstable personality, but I hope not (I know most people always thought this, but I thought she was too smart, too knowing and too glamorous for it to really be true.) Why has it taken *so long* for her to put together this album? I'll buy it regardless, and I still regard her as a potential icon, but I've got to admit I'm concerned.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I figure she's this generation's Marianne Faithful now. Only difference being that Faithful actually did fall from grace whereas Love's been a drug-addled cuntsack with limited songwriting/acting abilities from day one. RIP.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oh dear.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 31 January 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Rolling Stone would probably pan her no matter what. OK, the chance of her topping Celebrity Skin is almost non-existant, but it's bound to have a few good 'uns on it no matter how fucked she is at the mo.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 31 January 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this to review. Slated it. It was crap!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It was co-written by Linda Perry by the way. I just find it seemed like she has "a cynical attitude to the trappings and experiences of celebrityTM", and like WE KNOW IT'S NOT ALL GREAT, we know this by looking at people like Courtney not necessarily listening to them.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Explain.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm such an idiot, why am I down here at midnight, looking for the skin of a woman, who is really a seal.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, yeah, I forgot.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the video is very silly. Courtney looks alarmingly clean, not sure what's going on with her breasts these days, but who cares huh? She pulls little girls out from under her dress and proceeds to chase big surly men with anti-Love spray out of a mall. It's a contrived 'do you see' extravaganza that's barely a step up from Amy Studt but that's our Courtney eh?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a bit worried by the Live Through This comparisons

I just realized yesterday it's been almost exactly ten years since Live Through This. Nutty.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just listening to this album now. I think the rating Rolling Stone gave it is a bit unfair. It's not that bad, really. A lot of the better songs do go on a minute or so too long and a lot of it just sounds like she's busy treading water but it's not truly terrible by any means.

She sounds pretty fucked up on Plague but everything else is pretty much business as usual and not at all like the way RS were going on about it. Really lame tortured Hollywood princess lyrics though. I'm talking really wince-worthy stuff here. But who knows.. seventeen year old girls might really dig it.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah Ned, I was thinking about that when I was watching Courtney Love's "True Hollywood Story" on E! this weekend. Or more precisely, starting a thread called "Come anticipate the 10th anniversary of Kurdt's suicide with me".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This album deserved less than the 2 stars it got in RS. My friend played me The Plague and tried to make me guess who it was. I guessed Juliette Lewis.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OUCH

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And then i listened to the rest of it and said "So has Courtney met Shane McGowan yet?"

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to get the album tomorrow!

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll like it. I'd give it 3 stars out of 4. I just finished writing a review a few minutes ago. I guess I'm just a sucker for a woman that rocks in this day and age. I mean, who does anymore? Fefe Dobson doesn't cut it for me.

M Deeds, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Boy, Courtney threads ain't what they used to be. Where's Queen G?

I have mixed feeling about it, but I think you'll like it, Sean. The rockers are really good. "Mono" you know. "But Julian..." is the Skids meets the Muffs. I thought it sounded like a dumb idea at first, but her delivery is great. "I'll Do Anything" sounds like some band that was superpopular a decade or so ago and has some funny lyrics. It's great. Taking self-obsession to new heights, la la la. "Hello" does the boys gang backup vocal "hello hello hello" thing, is it a nod to Gary Glitter/Oasis or Cheap Trick? I like it. "Zeplin Song" reminds me of the Hollywood rock scene of the late '80s, I just picture some gross apartment complex around Sunset and La Brea filled with G 'n R wannabes and the women who love them. It reminds me of Redd Kross, too, actually. Which is the highest compliment from me. It's her "Jimmy's Fantasy"!

The songs that actually sound like Zeppelin I don't much care for. Her Robert Plant/Candy Slice impersonation on "Life Despite God" is pretty dire. "All the Drugs' would have been OK but songs about drugs are so boring.

The mid-tempo songs are so-so. "Almost Golden" is "Boys on the Radio" Pt. 2, that "poor pretty rock star boy let me save you" sentiment. "Sunset Strip" has that "Downed"/"Dear Prudence" descending guitar thing, which is nice, but the lyrics are incredibly corny. I hate it when she tries to do these profound Los Angeles songs, it's much better when the lyrics are jokey and throwaway, like on "Celebrity Skin" or "Zeplin Song". The "timeless" Stevie ballads like "Hold on to Me" and ""Never Gonna Be the Same" are not my thing, generally.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like a great album, but I've only played it through twice. I just keep getting stuck on "I'd Do Anything" - and since "Boys On The Radio" was my favourite track on CS, I wuv "Almost Golden" lots.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really loving "Zeplin Song" now, I think it's my favorite on the album.

" 'Will you accept a collect call from Robert Plant?'/
We picked him up on Vine/
On a bus bench, singing that song, he cannot stop/
This is not the first time/
He was so cute/ Johnny Punk Rock, so cynical/
You would have jumped him, too."

Story of my life, har har.

Edward, I love your blog, it 's the greatest!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about Zeplin Song is that it goes for 2:48, so it's nowhere near as long and bloated as it should be based on the title. Oh and because of the snarling competition between Courtney, the backing vocals and the riff.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it just me or are those lyrics so very Liz Phair'ish?

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the last quarter of Uncool is absolutely pretty good.

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

reminds me of the Hollywood rock scene of the late '80s, I just picture some gross apartment complex around Sunset and La Brea filled with G 'n R wannabes and the women who love them

I think I'm gonna love this!

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sunset Strip" sounds like "More Than A Feeling", thus: album of the year.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better as an album than as a collection of songs, as noted above, the album's strengths are when the girl is shouting ("Mono", "But Julian I'm A Little Older Than You", "Zeplin Song"), so those songs that sound like the middle tracks off "Celebrity Skin" do drag when listened to in isolation. But, as part of a full product, it's... it really is great.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Uncool" is the album's "Use Once & Destroy" = goodness.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I may give this 10/10 on principle.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm digging this so far, but I'm a bit puzzled by how low the vocals are mixed on the whole album.

Anyway, the thank-you's are fantastic as usual, b-b-but the Church of Scientology?!

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I really really really love the ballads on here; the rockers (aside from "Zeplin," which is hilarious and which I think is actually Courtney crying foul on HERSELF and her not-so-"punk" Zep and powerpop fixations and her cheesy slacker drug ethic) wear out their welcomes a bit quickly, but "Hold on to Me" and "Never Gonna Be the Same" have CL on some serious next-level vocal shit that spits all the processing right back at the Pro Tools rig and gives us the perfect measure of breath and scratch and pillmouth garble & what I love about it is that it DOESN'T immediately sound like Janis Joplin and it DOES sound amazingly like Bette Midler emulating same in The Rose, sorta like Toni Collette impersonating ABBA in Muriel's Wedding in that it's a tribute that ends up saying more about the original artist than the artist could ever say about herself.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend's been giving it a few spins a day. I didn't realize how little it was doing for me til the Auf Der Mar came on the radio and I realized how much better it was than the Courtney (and the Auf Der Mar isn't that great at all.)

anode (anode), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Almost Golden" is "Boys on the Radio" Pt. 2, that "poor pretty rock star boy let me save you" sentiment.

haha it's about arson ("almost golden," get it?)

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? If that's true, then I think it's my second favorite song on the album. I just listened to it again--that's so creepy!

I wish I felt the same about the ballads/vocals...maybe they'll grow on me.

You know The Rose was one of her favorite movies (Kurt's appearance at the start of Reading in '92 was supposed to be an impersonation of the Rose in the final scene of the movie) and her first manager (circa Straight to Hell was trying to promote her as a young Bette Midler?

Her new album is really good. I feel bad people feel compelled to tear her down, people who have never ascended beyond a hand to mouth lifestyle. When the morons who put her down ever create something beyond a microwave dinner, I might take in what they say. People are upset becasue she doesnt fit into their mold of what a person should be like, picturing an infinity of lemmings following each other off a pier is easier for them to handle than people who dare break their idea of what normal is. Viva la Courtney. I vote we hope for the best for her and stop all the petty negativity.

Courtney Love Arrested on Assault Charge
Associated Press

NEW YORK - A few hours after a loopy "Late Show" appearance in which she lifted her shirt to expose her breasts at least six times, rocker Courtney Love was arrested early Thursday for allegedly throwing a microphone stand and striking a man in the head.

The 24-year-old man was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said. Police said they were charging Love with reckless endangerment and third-degree assault after the 2:30 a.m. incident at a posh Manhattan nightclub.

Messages left for representatives of Love early Thursday weren't immediately returned.

Love, who is facing felony drug charges in California, repeatedly lifted her olive shirt several times on David Letterman's CBS talk show.

Her back was facing the camera when she exposed herself while making an entrance. She then stood atop Letterman's desk, sang a few bars of "Danny Boy," and offered the host an up-close viewing. The video was altered so a profile of her breasts could not be seen.

She alluded to actress Drew Barrymore, who similarly exposed herself to the talk-show host.

"Very sweet of you," Letterman said. "We're going to lose our liquor license."

Love sat down on Letterman's couch, gestured to her chest and said, "FCC!"

Of the Federal Communication Commission's recent crackdown on lewd content on television and radio, Love said, "Is this like Reagan trickle-down economics? Is this like Bush trickle down?"

Love, the former lead singer of the group Hole, was arrested in October after allegedly trying to break into the Los Angeles home of a former boyfriend. Police later called to her home allegedly found painkillers when Love was taken to a treatment center for a drug overdose.

Love has been charged with two felony counts of possession of controlled substances. She also faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

A preliminary hearing in the felony case has been postponed to April 15. She showed up two hours late Tuesday for a court hearing and was scolded by the judge after talking out of turn in court.

During his show, Letterman asked Love whether she could talk about the court case. "Yeah, I'm not supposed to," she said.

When Letterman later asked if drugs were involved, Love said, "One expired Percocet and one Ambien." Love later lit up a cigarette - defying New York City's strict anti-smoking laws - and asked Letterman, "Are you going to cut this because I'm smoking?"

"That won't be the reason we cut anything," he replied. Letterman looked profoundly uncomfortable with Love's scatterbrained performance, but he did get the last word. He was looking to cut to a commercial, but Love insisted he ask her one more question.

"How much do you weigh?" Letterman said. Love looked shocked. She didn't answer.

Hi, I don't know if anyone is reading this. It is better to sing well then to sing on tune all the time.
Even the best sing off once in a while. I don't have a pitch shifter nor do I want one. I don't want to rely on talent buttons.
You must read my gig section, if you don't start supporting artists by writing positive messages about them all over the internet I will change my stage name and titles and you will never find me again.
You people have two months. I will get a new breed of appreciative people. Comments..like ..." I am growing tired of Marissa cause she isn't a celebrity." these are mentally abusive comments coming from people who are lowlife.
If you google search me, you will see why we don't have good music on the radio anymore.
People are truly abusive to artists..and not supportive of them.
]the radio sucks and it is because of the masses..they suck..
the only people who suck and who sing off key all the time ,, are the masses..
