i have been listening to dmx krews 'fressshhh...' and 'nu romantix' albums for two days and it now appears to e that there is no need for any other musci ever. is this right? or is parody/ironic 80's electro horrible and worthy of utter hatred?

is dmx krew ironic?

the critisicm of people that trying to be 'ironic' is that its not even funny, even les good. but i love it!

so maybe thats all that matters.

here are all the amazing dmx krew hits:

'body rock' - lyric check! 'im all alon' - 80's urban paranoia par excellence, cylob mix even better. 'bonkers goes back to school' - its awful. i like it 'you cant hide your love' 'mouse' 'a place called love' 'come to me' 'ready to roll'

and on and on!

so whats 'we are dmx' like? ive heard a track called er.....well, something in japanese. that is brillaint.

I had a similar reaction to DMX Krew that's hard to articulate - they do seem funny and ironic, but then it's hard to say how smart they actually are, and the music isn't really fascinating, but then is ironic music supposed to be fascinating? Sorry to be so non-specific, but perhaps if you've heard them you'll know what I mean. Songs like '20 Minute Affair' seem really clever on one level, and on the other hand, maybe just boorish and stupid. That's the fucked thing about irony, it really does protect you from analysis. Because perhaps they understand simplicity, and they're doing something beautiful, or perhaps they have a really low-level understanding of irony, and it's just a thin veil for their stupidity... that's a bit harsh, I mean the music is fun, so they're not just 'stupid.'

Perhaps someone actually knows this band. They seem like the kind of people someone would know.

DMX Krew are actually one guy, Ed DMX. He has a website:

http://www.dmxkrew.dircon.co.uk/

Ed DMX was instrumental in getting Mira Calix a deal on Warp.

I am IDM as fuck. :P

i think dmx krew are/is fabulous. totally agreed about the whole irony deal, but at the same times its like post-irony or something. cloaking something quite sincere and almost naive and then acting like its ironic. i think where dmx krew really excel is that ed upton has a real way with melody.

i love aphex's mix of 'you can't hide your love', which keeps the sam fox 80s euro purposely bad vox but then rdj puts on that otherworldy sheen.

We Are DMX is worth getting Ambrose, i would say it is better than Nu Romantix.

I used to work with Ed DMX and he was a luvverly fella. He's also a superb piano player and likes Neil Young!

i thought mira calix got a deal cos she was one of autechres girlfriend/wife?

we are dmx. gonna get it today.

ambrose, thats what i thought re mira calix too. but then, it may have been you that told me that.

GD Luxxe? i've heard this is similar to DMX Krew but i haven't heard them

gareth, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GD Luxxe is just someone on breakin i think., think i have a record by them .i have two breakin records and they are both a bit weak. nothing like dmx krew.

irony: to be honest dmx krew i think surpasses all critiscims of 'unfunny' parody or whatever by virtue of a)having unbearably funky tunes b) as gareth said, wicked melodys c) actually just generally wicked music. i guess the only irony claim you could put to dmx krew is to the lyrics. well cos i have such a badly developed sense of humour i still find them very funny. anymay maybe its like jimi tenor ie no irony intend

G.D. Luxxe is Gerhard Potuznik. He has done records on Ersatz Audio, Interdimension Transmissions, and Cheap, among other lables. He is a middle aged producer from Vienna, Austria who has been making electronic music for over 20 years.

I think his best track was Red on the Oral-Olio 12" on Ersatz, dark hard electro with vocals sung to the tune of Heart And Soul by Joy Division. He is definitely an artist worth keeping up with.

You guys are right about Mira Calix, I have her confused with another female UK producer. I distinctly remember reading something about a woman saying how much help Ed DMX was, and I cant think of who it is. This is really bothering me now, do you guys have any ideas?

The other thing I should mention is that if you are feeling Ed DMX you should look into his Rephlex label-mate Cylob. His album "living in the 80's" is top notch if you are looking for 80's irony. "Cylobian Sunset" has it's moments as well.

as for GD Luxxe, the material I have heard is not silly 80's rehash, it is probably a bit darker than what you are looking for.

Michael, i think you are thinking of Lektrogirl, who signed to rephlex with eds help. shes from tasmania i believe. unfortunately her album is irritating and rather bad.

as for cylob, yes, agreed, although i think 'living in the 1980s' is one of his weaker records. 'rewind' covers similar ground in a far superior way (the dmx krew rmx being the best version)

gareth, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

agreed, the DMX remix is a serious rock jam.

thirteen years pass...

*synth bass* I AM... A MOUSE!
