Other than "Bank Robber", which is great, and thanfully available as a 7", I can't think of a single clash number that doesn't make me feel totally miserable when I hear it.

clash hata foreva (Pashmina), Friday, 19 December 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm OK.

Rock The Casbah
Train In Vain
London Calling

The Street Parade/Lover's Rock

pete s, Friday, 19 December 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm amazed by how many people are picking "Rock the Casbah." I thought real Clash fans groan whenever they hear it on the radio (that and "Should I Stay ...").

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ilm's hate for the clash will never cease to amaze me.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

also i could never get it down to 10.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

IT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT APPEALED TO me the most aBOUT ILM WHEN I FiRST FOUND THE PLACE. AT LAST!! A LOAD OF PEOPLE WHO think they suck as well!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

jazzbo- I'm not a clash fan.

'rock the casbah' is great bcz its: 1) great and 2) bcz you can use it as a stick to beat 'real' clash fans with. It amuses me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 'em but think The Jam were way better.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(whisper whisper the ruts whisper shisper)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ruts are so fucking dollar-store. Babylon's Boring!

Aaaaaanyhow:

"Complete Control"
"What's My Name"
"Stay Free"
"Tommy Gun"
"Bankrobber"
"Spanish Bombs"
"The Card Cheat"
"Magnificent Seven"
"The Call Up"
"Straight to Hell"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(actually I just said that to be a dick and have no real concrete opinion vis a vis the Ruts but mocking the subject in a POX thread = trash)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't fathom hating The Clash. I can understand not getting into them, or having it not be to a person's taste, but intensely disliking them seems like a very reactionary move to me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless you're a pigeon fancier, maybe

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 19 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't believe we haven't done this.

1. "Complete Control"
2. "Clash City Rockers"
3. "Police on My Back"
4. "London Calling"
5. "Magnificent Seven"
6. "Armagiddeon Time"
7. "Janie Jones"
8. "Know Your Rights" (live version from ..Eternity)
9. "This is Radio Clash"
10. "Innoculated City"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

shit....
11. "Guns of Brixton"
12. "Koka Kola"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always thought "Guns of Brixton" was their "News of The World" - a cliche-ridden, third-rate song recorded to keep the bass player happy.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The first ten that come to mind -- there are at least 47 more:

1. Garageland
2. Stay Free
3. Safe European Home
4. Jail Guitar Doors
5. Police On My Back
6. Police & Thieves
7. Washington Bullets
8. Straight to Hell
9. Lost in the Supermarket
10. London Calling

What a woefully inadequate list.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

a cliche-ridden, third-rate song recorded to keep the bass
player happy.

Coulda been, but I still think it's a pretty cool track. So did Norman Cook.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This is easy...

1. The Clash
2. London's Calling
3. Give 'em Enough Rope

...oh, wait. You mean songs? Sorry, impossible.

Not That Chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez... off the top of my head...

Armagideon Time
Straight To Hell
Hateful
White Man in Hammersmith Palais
Janie Jones
Complete Control
Rock the Casbah
Career Opportunities
Train in Vain
This Is Radio Clash

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Not That Chuck; more like this:

1. The Clash (American edition)
2. The Clash (British edition)
3. Give Em Enough Rope
4. Black Market Clash (any version)
5. London Calling
6. Sandinista!
7. Everything the 101ers ever did
8. Cut the Crap
9. Whatever Crap they did after Cut the Crap
10. Joe Strummer's post-Clash solo career
11. Big Audio Dynamite

that chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, how could I forget?! I left out:

7.5: Combat Rock

chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

...And Out Come the Wolves would be around 3.5, by the way.

And *Oi! The Album* would be 7.25, I guess.

chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1. The Clash (American edition)

Cheater. Guess I'll just never convince you Yanks that's not a proper album and more a compilation. I get the same snooty feeling when I see The Buzzcocks "Going Steady" cited as one of the greatest albums ever made.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear That Chuck,

Well, I'd switch the US and UK versions of The Clash (US better cut for cut, but UK better as an album) and I do think you underrate London's Calling but what the hell...

Not That Chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, if you're including Everything the 101ers ever did; Cut the Crap; Whatever Crap they did after Cut the Crap; Joe Strummer's post-Clash solo career; and Big Audio Dynamite; what's wrong with Havana 3AM?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, forget that stinker (if it was indeed a stinker -- actually, I forget.) I do expect that "!!! imitating Big Audio Dynamite" would finish a few spots below "Big Audio Dynamite" itself, however.

chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
Garageland
London Calling
Guns Of Brixton
Stay Free
Janie Jones
Lost In The Supermarket
Police On My Back
Rudie Can't Fail
Street Parade

This is by no way definitive. Straight away I realise I missed off "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Groovy Times", "The Magnificant Seven" etc. I hate myself for this and this may develop into some sort of long-term mental health issue for me. Merry Christmas, ILM.

Colin Cooper, Friday, 19 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That Chuck -- I know that it makes for a nice theory (that the band got worse as it went along), but what's your rationale for preferring "Give 'Em Enough Rope" over "London Calling" and "Combat Rock"? I can see ranking "GEER" above "Sandinista!," but putting it above "LC" and "CR" seems a bit harder to justify.

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Better lyrics, more consistent, less detached, catchier, rocks harder (hey, I'm a Blue Oyster Cult fan!), prettier melodies, more danceable, better production. I dunno; *Rope* has always been ridiculously underrated. *London Calling* has never had a single song I LOVE, though it also doesn't have any I actively dislike; *Rope* has plenty I love, and unlike *LC* doesn't have THIS IS IMPORTANT written all over it. Never liked *Combat Rock* much at all; the two hit singles on it are okay, but there's nothing they do with dance music there that they hadn't already done better on *Sandinista!*.

chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e.: I'll take these over ANYTHING off London Calling or Combat Rock:

1. Safe European Home (Jones/Strummer) - 3:50
2. English Civil War (Jones/Strummer/Traditional) - 2:35
3. Tommy Gun (Jones/Strummer) - 3:17
4. Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad (Jones/Strummer) - 3:03
5. Last Gang in Town (Jones/Strummer) - 5:14
7. Drug-Stabbing Time (Jones/Strummer) - 3:43
8. Stay Free (Jones/Strummer) - 3:40
10. All the Young Punks (New Boots and... (Jones/Strummer) - 4:55

Never was a huge "Guns on the Roof" or "Cheapskates" fan, I guess.

chuck, Friday, 19 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If it helps, "Guns on the Roof" is apparently about getting arrested for shooting pigeons.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 20 December 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, limiting myself to things not previously named in this thread...(one way to narrow it down):

Capital Radio One
The Prisoner
This Is England
I Fought the Law
Wrong 'em Boyo
Remote Control
Charlie Don't Surf
Justice Tonight/Kick It Over
City of the Dead
I'm Not Down

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Pressure Drop
Brand New Cadillac
Junco Partner
Midnight Log
Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice)
1-2 Crush on You
Are You Red...Y?
The Cool Out (someone needs to mash this with House of Jealous Lovers -- "House of Cool Lovers" -- it would sound great)
Protex Blue
Stop the World
Somebody Got Murdered

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck -- I agree that "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is underrated. It was good to see "Stay Free" get some airtime during "School Of Rock."

I think my personal preference for "Combat Rock" over "Give 'Em Enough Rope" and "Sandinista!" probably has a lot to do with the circumstances under which those records came into my life. "Combat Rock" was the first Clash recording that I owned -- I bought it in the fall of '92, when I was a senior in high school, and I listened to it all the time. It wound up being the opening of the floodgates to all sorts of music that I had missed -- I bought "London Calling" a couple of months later, that Rhino "UK Pop: 1976-79" a couple of months after that, and the two-disc Mott The Hoople set a couple of months after that. With "Give 'Em Enough Rope" and "Sandinista!", I didn't get to explore the records at length until I bought the reissues in 2000. I liked them fine, but they just didn't have the same life-changing impact. Of course, it's fairly easy to conclude that my preferences would be reversed if one or both of "Give 'Em Enough Rope" and "Sandinista!" had been my intros.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Many years ago I shared a house with a lesbian couple who had an Alsatian dog. I used to take Sappho (the dog) for "walks" on my bike, and when she was running fast along a tarmac path the sound her claws made was just like the intro to I Fought the Law. This is why I Fought the Law is the best Clash song.

Andrew Norman, Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

POX? Sorry. No can do.
Not that Chuck SOOOOO OTM.
A 'POX' on PASHMINA AND THE HATAZ, sez I!!!1

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Stay Free
Train In Vain
Safe European Home
Armagideon Time
Rudie Can't Fail
White Man In Hammersmith Palais
This Is England
Police and Thieves
Charlie Don't Surf
Groovy Times

The Clash is probably still my all-time favorite band, but I can see why people would hate them. Their idealism seems to annoy a lot of people. But what's fascinating about ILM Clash-hate is that it doesn't come from the usual suspects (prog/Malmsteen virtuosity-fetishists and kneejerk anti-canonists/guitar-haters) - Dave Q and Mark S and Norman Phay all seem to dislike them from wildly disparate angles (I still don't get Mark S's "the clash = not punk" thing - dude, neither is your mom!). And I'm completely baffled by charges that they can't rock (cf. Joe Carducci) and that they were clueless about reggae (just compare their "Armagideon Time" to the original).

Also, I'm thrilled to bits that Tom has found 5 Clash songs he likes, and agreeably surprised that Jess is a fan.

Patrick (Patrick), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Chuck OTM about Give 'em Enough Rope - it's their most passionate, big-hearted album, and sometimes I prefer it to all the others (I've probably listened to it more too).

And despite "Rock The Casbah" and "Straight to Hell", Cut The Crap > Combat Rock.

Patrick (Patrick), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My 2 cents:

"Complete Control"
"Washington Bullets"
"Cheat"
"London's Burning"
"Train in Vain"
"Spanish Bombs"
"Revolution Rock"
"White Riot"
"Rudie Can't Fail"
"This is Radio Clash"

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean we haven't done these guys before?

1. (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
2. Death Or Glory
3. London Calling
4. Armagideon Time
5. Straight To Hell
6. Jimmy Jazz
7. The Guns Of Brixton
8. Clampdown
9. Revolution Rock
10.Clash City Rockers

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 21 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

I was watching the Weather Channel the other day when there were tornadoes heading our way, and the bed music for the local forecast cutaway was the Clash cover of "Time Is Tight."

Carlos Pollomar (WmC), Friday, 9 March 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

Much as I love many Strummer/Jones songs, a great proportion of my picks are their covers, like Police on My Back, Armagideon Time, etc...

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 9 March 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

This is on near Covent Garden until the 22nd if anyone fancies it:

https://www.rocknrollpl.com/about

Really neat concept, basically an exhibition of Mick Jones' stuff - records, CDs, comics, books, old VHS tapes (many of them self recorded).

One great aspect of it is that with a few exceptions (including, understandably enough, an issue of Action with the "kids rule ok" cover) you're allowed to interact, rifle through his records (I was amused by the amount of MOJO free cds), dip into the books, investigate what Mick has taped off the telly.

It's free too.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 17 March 2025 10:36 (seven months ago)

Anybody know if Mick makes any music these days?
Seems to have an incredibly low profile for an artist of his stature... and doesn't appear to have done much in the way of writing/recording since the BAD reunion.
