That appeares to be an old photo with Kris Bataille, their pre-Blackie drummer, since they're wearing their circa-'87/'88 suits. Which would leave me to believe that Blackie will not be part of the group.

But, 3 shows on the East Coast and none scheduled for Chicago...wtf?

Anyway, interesting; I'd love to see 'em again.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Err, 2 East Coast shows, 1 West Coast show...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

why?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

sfw

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not? I'd go see 'em. Heck, It'd be fun to see 'em with Bataille, that crazy fucker. BBT, maybe the out-of-town shows are meant to be like a warm-up for a big Chi-town hooha or something.

Have we lost Magglio yet?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Broheems, we haven't lost Maggs. Yet. I still didn't get what KW was trying to do, though -- why take on Nomah's $10.5M salary when you're just going to lose him at the end of 2004, too?

Maybe UOK will do "secret" shows at the Hideout, in which case I'd never find out...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 19 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe they'll reunute and do "Strange, I" type material again. That would be a pleasantly disturbing freak-out. (but I somehow doubt it)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Nate and Albini can reunite and do that one song they did on the Tellus comp, too!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 19 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

Actually, they should totally have a Ruthless fest, with the Strange, I Urge Overkill lineup, and a reunited End Result and Dark Arts also on the bill! Heck, get NWA back together too!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget Rifle Sport and Appliances SFB!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 19 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget Rifle Sport

don't encourage me!

Also, I liked Urge Overkill but I suspect this reunion will be embarrassing.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be curious to see them. I never caught UO live, but I did see Nash Kato playing a solo set as an opening act for Cheap Trick about three years ago, and he was entertaining.

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed Roeser once saved my young life. (It's true!) Also, I saw them on JBTV the other night, and Blackie was in the house, so ... they were hosting their own video retrospective. Hovered somewhere between faintly sad and faintly cute.

ermes marana, Friday, 19 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Jody to thread!

Oh god, this actually makes me really excited.

I mean...what if...what if they actually topped Saturation? How much would that rule?

They are great live, btw.

Does this mean that they have cleared up all the *cough* problems?

And

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it would be a little OTT of me to drive down for the LA show...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean that they have cleared up all the *cough* problems?

Hahahahahaha ... (tough call; the way they looked I could go either way, but history would suggest, well, you know.)

ermes marana, Saturday, 20 December 2003 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A little bird told me that they are opening for the Femmes at the Metro on New Year's Eve.

Vek (vek), Saturday, 20 December 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The first time I saw Sleater-Kinney, I'd never heard them and they came out and played "I Want to be Your Joey Ramone." I turned to my right and had a "WHOA!" moment with some guy who I double-taked and realized was King Roeser. Then my best friend followed him into the bathroom to tell him how awesome he thought "Supersonic Storybook" was. If Blackie's in, I'm down, but otherwise I'm still pretty much down.

We all scored pretty high on that Music Nerd test, right?

rainman (rainman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
and now they're coming here!!!!

i am officially 'stoked', bro.

eedd, Monday, 2 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, how did I miss this thread the first time? I'm super excited about this and wish there was I chance I could see it. Supersonic Storybook, Saturation and Exit The Dragon are all incredible albums. I thought Blackie was going to be involved, but I guess not...that's a shame, cuz "Dropout" and "Mistake" are classics.

New song here.

Not bad.

Moodles, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

awww, i like this song.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

I like the new track quite a bit. Hopeful that it will sound more like the T&G years.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

spin is right: it isn't the most melodic or hook-y thing they've done (not even close), but it is "raw and urgent" sounding, which is more than you could reasonably expect at this stage.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

four months pass...

Somehow I missed this when it showed up, but I found it yesterday and think it's great. I hope the album they're recording actually materializes.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

i used to really like urge, but i saw one "reunion tour" and it was p bad...the drummer had bleach blonde dreadlocks :/

pajamagram sam (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

New song was a little pre-Supersonic for my taste, but Rock'n'Roll Submarine is a pretty awesome title

Urge Overkill Return With Their First New Album in Over 15 Years!

Rock&Roll Submarine is Out May 10th

http://gallery.mailchimp.com/1d59aca4aeedaab429816159e/images/Urge_Overkill_Lo_Res_Press_Photo_3.jpg

Over 15 years since their last album, the two-headed rock ‘n roll behemoth that is Urge Overkill, will finally make its return. Their new album, Rock&Roll Submarine, is out May 10th on their own label UO Records. The band’s mixture of arena-ready hooks with punk rock ferocity is as potent as ever, as apparent on the rip-roaring new track, “Effigy.” As fans who crowded NYC’s Mercury Lounge this past October to witness the reunited group can attest, UO’s live show is in top form as well. The guys kick off a brief US tour in May, where they will be tearing through their new and classic material.

The reformed lineup is made up of original singer-guitarists/songwriters Eddie “King” Roeser and Nash Kato, along with drummer Bonn Quast (Polvo; The Cherry Valence) and bassist Hadji Hodgkiss (Gaza Strippers). As always, the chemistry between Kato and Roeser is at the driving force behind each song. Whether it’s the haunting way in which their voices blend or their striking, intertwined guitars, the dual frontmen exude a unique and magnetic presence that has been sorely missed.

two months pass...

Just got the download for the new album. They always had a melodic quirkiness that wasn't really well discussed in reviews, and it looks to be intact. Production seems flat on first listen, but will have to wait for a few more listens and the actual CD to figure out what's what...

dlp9001, Friday, 6 May 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

Got the CD, and better sound helps. I'm leaning towards saying that it sounds pretty good but never gells, but maybe someday it'll gell. Certainly not bad anyway.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

saw the LP in the record store yesterday, looks great. was tempted, but decided i had to hear it first as effigy didn't do much for me. maybe i should figure i owe them for all the joy they've brung (dubbledead! positive bleeding! 76 ball!) and just pay up.

always have time for the crystalline entity (contenderizer), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

Their music is generally kinda boring to me (save "Positive Bleeding" for one) but Nash Kato is one of the best looking rock singers I've ever seen in my life outside of Sebastian Bach.

Hugs on Weed (AaronHz), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

It saddens me that this isn't getting much attention. Anyway, after a bunch of spins there's at least one keeper on this album: "Thought Balloon" ("three bubbles connecting a cloud that floats over my head..." is a cute lyric.)

I'm still making up my mind about the rest. One thing I notice is that the arrangements are really pretty busy. One of the cool things about Supersonic Storybook and Stull was all the space left in some of the songs... I remain Stull>Supersonic Storybook>Saturation>Exit>Submarine>the other stuff.
