Technical question re: iTunes and track lengths

So, I downloaded "Me and Giuliani..." by !!!, and when I launched it on iTunes, it showed up as like 15:32, even though the song is only 9:00 long. The song plays fine; it just stops when it looks (on the bar at the top) like it's only a little more than halfway through. I thought maybe this was a quirk with the mp3 I downloaded, but then I uploaded Stereolab's "Jenny Ondioline" from a CD, and it "read" the time as 28:18 instead of 18:05 or whatever. Same deal. As of right now, it's more irritating than anything else, but I'm really curious how this happens and if I can fix it.

somehow i tunes judges tracklengths according to bitrate - i have a copy of guiliani which says 40 minutes at 36kbps but in reality its a quarter of that length at 4x the bitrate - i dunno how to fix it.

does anyone kjnow how to update the sound library in itunes without actually deleting it and uploading everything you've got - including the new files you've downloaded - again?

one month passes...
I had the same problem with my iTunes library. When I first started using iTunes I would sometimes get double track listings for some MP3s when I updated my library. Eventually the problem just seemed to go away, and hasn't happened now for a few months. I would just dump everything and build your library again, although I sort my MP3s both alphabetically by "Artist" and chronologically by "Date Added", so rebuilding my library is kind of inconvenient for me now-a-days.

My copy did the same. I converted it from mp3 to AAC and that fixed it.
