Music videos that actually move you!?

Has anyone seen Mike Mills' video for Air's 'All I Need'?

Isn't it like the cutest thing ever? These teenagers talking about their life and the footage of the californian sunset over the skatepark. So warm and gentle and touching. The bit where the couple are sleeping in the car almost brought tears to my eyes. It's supposed to be real, too, I read somewhere. They're not actors. Also, the video adds to the music and makes it even luvlier.

This movie clip just goes right through all my smartass barricades and decoding filters. Do you feel the same way about any videos? Are there even any other touching videos out there ('cause this is surely the only time this has happened to me).

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the resounding answer will be Johnny Cash's video for "Hurt."

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The "All I Need" video chokes me up too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The bit in Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere" where Chris and Tina grow up and old.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Blur's Coffee and TV can get my eyes watering sometimes, depending on what mood i'm in.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I for some reason get really moved by Kanye West's Through the Wire....it's kinda like his scrapbook or something, very nostalgic.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

david banner -- like a pimp. the ass-whomping coming to the lynch mob gets me every time.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenna's "Hell Bent" (actually just a short film which was borrowed and turned into a music clip) really makes me sad for whatever reason.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

johnny,
what is it about?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

nnng 'Maps' nnng

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno if I'd even like the song Maps if i didn't see the video first, it's like Coldplay's clocks video but even cheesier, there's this long shot of Karen o crying while she sings at the end that really makes me go all blubblub despite my better instincts

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

man, I must hear this Maps song everyone is talking about lately.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Kenna video is a Claymation thing about a downtrodden worker in a factory who discovers a way to make Rose-Tinted Glasses, uses it as a means to escape from his evil oppressive boss, then turns into an evil oppressive boss himself, realizing that he's stomped all over his last chance at private happiness at the end of his life.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the part where Rick James nods approvingly to Eddie Murphy in the "Party All The Time" video. Such coordination and vibe chokes me up.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Laibach "Life is Life". Never has a band worked so incredibly hard to be resolute than in this video.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG there's also that Motorhomes song where this guy says goodbye to his cute dog (the text is something like "you have nothing to fear"), and then it is sent out into space like laika. it has a photo in the space capsule of its owner, though. in the end, it dies all alone, like laika. very manipulating but it works. boo-hoohoohoohoohoo.....

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ancient, but "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Thanks, Alex. I didn't want to have to be the first to admit that this one still gets me.

rainman (rainman), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason Everclear's I Will Buy You a New Life...

For me, it's Father Of Mine. I almost cried when I first saw that and I like my dad! And Before that, I didn't think I even liked Everclear at all.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 20 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Joy Division - Atmosphere

Re: "Hurt" I wish they'd cut all of the footage of Cash shot for the video, and comprised it entirely of archive footage and shots from the House of Cash

Ben Dot (1977), Monday, 22 December 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf? i swear there was a thread about this b4, with 'All I Need' cited too!

my picks:

Massive Attack 'Protection'
Guns n' Roses 'November Rain'
Bjork 'Joga', 'All Is Full Of Love' and 'Bachelorette'
Sigur Ros 'Untitled' (recently won the MTV European Music Award gong for best vid and deservedly so) and all oher Sigur Ros videos
UNKLE 'An Eye For An Eye'
Radiohead 'Pyramid Song'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I was totally gonna mention the Sigur Ros video for, um, #7 on Agaetis Byrjun with the kids playing footie and the sudden kiss and them being pulled apart God that video was something else.

Also: Pearl Jam's "Do the Evolution". That video made me so emotional tumultuous, I couldn't stand the world for like the rest of the day after having seen it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen the Sigur Ros video i cited nick? kids in gasmasks playing in charred snow - it's breath-taking and i nearly cwy

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's that girl who did all the early, good manson stuff who diddit. gloria sigismundi or summin'.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

piscesboy, Monday, 22 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney when she's on top of that mountain, cause she's NOT A GIRL ANYMORE dammit, or something.

Actually that doesn't move me in the slightest. Maybe 'Joga'

kinski (kinski), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Technotronic " Move This "

triasum, Monday, 22 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Come Into My World - Kylie Minogue
Almost never fails to move me just because it's such a perfect video.

Also..
Teardrop - Massive Attack
Jeremy - Pearl Jam
Thirty-Three - Smashing Pumpkins
One - Metallica
Lost Cause - Beck

Definitely the Sigur Ros video with the two boys (Vidrar Vel or whatever) - this actually might be my favorite video ever made.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, there's also that one like 5 years ago "All You Good Good People" by some band who I think was called Embrace who I had never heard of besides this video.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I should also say I think that AIR video is gorgeous, and it was that video which convinced me to buy Moon Safari back in the day. 1998 was a huge year for music videos.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

- Reo Speedwagon - Can't fight this feeling (the one with the kid getting older; just like the sketch on "Road to nowhere")
- Smashing Pumpkins - Try Try Try (the worst Pumpkins song of all, but the video -especially the full, uncensored version- shakes me up every time)
- Sigur Rós - Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa (the one with the kids kissing - utterly disturbing)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

jay-z 'anything' drawing the picture, his mom, asthma, range rovering his mom out to the house in the picture, make you cry.

d k (d k), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh, yeah. sigur ros' "vidrar vel til loftarasa" or however it's spelled in fake Icelandic...and "all is full of love"

I cried hysterical tears the first time I saw that sigur ros video. it was dreadful.
