Me = Black And Blue. not perfect by any stretch, but pretty damn satisfying. Memory Motel is probably my favorite Stones ballad, and that's saying a lot.

For this purpose, use your own definition of the canon.

Second place would be any of Aftermath, Tattoo You, Between The Buttons, and Voodoo Lounge. And the first album.

I like Aftermath and Between the Buttons, but maybe they are in the canon?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 20 December 2003 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, in my opinion, with the exception of "Satanic Majesties" and maybe their first LP, all their records up thru "Exile" are in the "canon." I don't love "Between the Buttons" that much, but it's a good example of almost-happening, over-thought, attenuated rock and roll. Which needs a canon of its own, I guess.

One that gets neglected, maybe, is "December's Children," with the great "Gotta Get Away." "Aftermath" is of course the essential Jones-era, pre-'68 Stones record; nothing gets me off more than "Think."

I think "Emotional Rescue" is a very good record indeed; "Black and Blue" has its moments. "It's Only Rock n Roll" isn't very good, neither is "Goats Head." So I'll say, for (maybe) non-canonic choices, "December's" and "Emotional."

Well, leaning on eddie hurt's opinion then, inna manner of speaking, I reveal my (half)love of (approx. a half of) Their Satanic Majesties

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

They're kind of all in the canon, aren't they?

I pick Aftermath.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Black and Blue and Goats Head Soup.

roger adultery, Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Around and Around. Yeah, it's a comp, but it earns bonus points for the cool pictures on the back cover.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(cool pictures?=not in the canon)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Between the Buttons is my favorite and it *is* in the canon but you don't see it getting the hyperventilating encomiums that Exile on Main Street or Beggar's Banquet or Let It Bleed gets. It's like the canonical Stones no-one talks about, maybe because it's almost folk-rock and twee in parts, and hence nowhere near as butt-wigglingly bad-ass as the others.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit I forgot about Goat's Head Soup...I changed my mind, "Winter" is actually my favorite Stones ballad.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Satanic Majestiy's Request count as in the canon or not?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose the "canon" is the '68-'72 Big Four. Or you could say, their representation in that Rolling Stone top 500 - which would add, what, five or so more?

Anyway, I find something of value in all their records. Anytime Charlie Watts is behind the kit, there is something worth listening to. Then again, I have this strange habit of listening to what the individual musicians are doing when I listen to music.

I'd pick Steel Wheels or Voodoo Lounge; if I was forced to choose, let's go with Voodoo Lounge. THere is a really nice breadth of feeling on that record, a great batch of songs. Only downside is they could have excised one or two songs (it seems they discovered that CDs could fit more than 45 minutes of music); but I will forgive. The arrangements and production really bring out the songs. Ronnie in particular shines; he turns in some real nice slide playing.

I'm partial to "Goats Heat Soup." "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" is my all-time favorite Stones song. "Dancing With Mr. D" (which contains what I suspect is the only Jagger-Richards lyrical reference to the state of West Virginia) and "Star Star" are a bit cartoonish, but I find them to be a lot of fun. I also like "100 Years Ago." Plus, when they recorded the album, Mick was almost exactly the same age as I am now, which is a bit of a bizarre thought.

"Between The Buttons" is another good candidate. I suspect that I could put "Emotional Rescue" on the list, but it's been at least ten years since I listened to that album, so I don't remember what several of the songs sound like.

John Fredland (jfredland), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Metamorphosis in the canon? I seem to remember the critics and the band being dismissive of it when it came out cause it was put together by Allen Klein rather that one of the Stones and it's their demo versions of songs for other people [not that I ever heard the other versions, except Chris Farlowe's "Out of Time" and that was 20 years later]. But it's got some of their sweetest ("Sleepy City", "If You Let Me") and sickest ("I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys") songs. And "Jiving Sister Fanny"' is just great, it could go on forever. The only flaw is the very inferior version of "Memo from Turner".

2nd Choice: Between the Buttons, definitely.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

They all are awesome. The Rolling Stones fuck you up like a train. This question is ridiculous. This board is ridiculous. U R ALL GAY FAGORTS

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dean has spoken.Eh.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Yer Ya-Yas Out is my favourite Stones by some distance.

Hayden Nicholls (Pop the Weasel), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Got Live If You Want It. Just because it's so terrible.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So which Stones albums aren't in the canon?

rainman (rainman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

S/T "England's Newest Hitmakers" if it qualifies

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

How are "between the buttons" and aftermath" not in the canon? Is the canon relegated to "greatest hits" compilations?
The only Stones album that I love and most people seem not to is "some girls."

antexit (antexit), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to say Some Girls but assumed it had to be "in the canon." That was the first Stones album I ever heard!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Only Rock and Roll, for that Mick Taylor tune 'Time Waits for No One,' for the incredible solo and unique guitar tone. Bravo Mick.

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Whenever "canon" is in a thread title I expect it to be a Geir thread.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I like pretty much all of It's Only Rock 'n' Roll but I think the title track is like the definitive Stones song. Self-referential, great hook, exellent rhythm guitar, funky, quintessential Mick vocal.
