Since no one responded to my challenge (in the ZZ Top thread) to talk me out of buying the Hardcore UFOs box set, I searched the archives and fond that it hasn't been mentioned here yet. Blimey! Anyway, to briefly reiterate what I said in the othr thread, I'm not really what you'd call a 'rabid' fan, but the stuff I love, I love well. Guide me, ILM Voices of dissent.

Buy it! We all need to support Bob's beer drinking!

Well.. what's on this one? Isn't this like.. the third box set? Jesus, man. Prolific is one thing, and reissues are good, but sometimes too much is too much.

(x-post) He supports his beer-drinking habit quite well. He is the man who once appeared in an American women's magazine for the sole reason that he could espouse the joys of Budweiser and beg for free beer.
I suspect his touring schedule is based on the riders. One night's gig = one night's free beer.

There's a brief discussion of this in the "Why in the Name of all That is Holy..." thread.

There are several songs on the b-sides and EPs disc that are worthwhile if you like the band. Some people think the songs left off Mag Earwig (doled out as b-sides and foreign bonus trax) may actually be better than what ended up on the album. Just be sure not go in thinking that it collects all of the EPs GbV did for various labels in early-mid 90s. It strictly collects non-album Matador material.

And the live disc is probably a better overview than the actual best-of CD.

Tanya Headon truly has a point when it comes to these guys.

My god, that's hilarious. Who is this Tanya person and why do I suddenly find myself an instant fan? She's brilliant!!!! How long has she been at this??

The box set is only worthwhile for hardcore fans. I'm more or less one of those hardcore fans, and I don't really like much of it. There's some great songs on the Devils & Painkillers disc with all of the previously released but out-of-print material, "Back To Saturn X" on the previously unreleased disc is awesome, and there's a few interesting live versions on the live disc, but that's about it for them. The first ep isn't that great, and you can buy the (very worthwhile) best-of cd and dvd on their own for a lower price. Unless you're fanatical, get it on on p2p and delete the stuff you don't like.

Sure, if you live in Crazyland! The tracklisting on that disc is pretty lousy. They should have instead commercially released one of the shows that you can find on soulseek - the 2001 Atlanta show in particular would have been a perfect choice, as it covers most of the biggest GBV hits from Bee Thousand up through Isolation Drills, and contains a kick-ass version of "Back To Saturn X" that puts the version in the box set to shame.

three years pass...

I found a copy of this used for only $25 - but it's missing the damn booklet! Anyone have one they would part with? Can trade something maybe...hard to navigate the terrain without a booklet, especially on the B sides disc.
