Is "Pop Idol" every bit of the complete fucking joke that "American Idol" is over here? 'Cuz if it is, I'd really like to know why he'd care about it that much to do that. Even if he is one of the judges.

Maybe he had a lot of money on the outcome?

one true voice.

This is pretty much as near as Pete gets to success now, isn't it?

At least Stock has the Fast Food Rockers...

I was appalled by the way ppl said that Michelle wasn't Pop Idol material on account of her size, which is after all not only contributive to her being a good singer, but has been contributive to so many ppl being good singers! I mean how much quality material from the musical canon (pop or otherwise) would have to be binned if we insisted on all the singers being size 12 or something.

I was amazed by the blandness of the male competitors in this year's competition. And I think both Waterman and Cowell have figured out that unless they do and say controversial things ppl might actually start noticing that they have mno talent or other redeeming features themselves. Something that many other judges on music talent shows, David Grant or Paula Abdul for example, don't have to worry about.

It's like having all five of Girls Aloud in one!

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 21 December 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Calum to thread!

Has Pete Waterman had any hits since Steps split up?
Does he hold the record for most hits for a record producer?

That made me chuckle. Simon is every ounce as talented at what he does as Paula is at whatever she ever did. She... what? Sang, kinda? Danced around a little? Yeah, that must be why she's still an international superstar. Simon is at least still making money producing records.

I wonder if the journalist meant the juxtaposition of these two paragraphs to be as telling as it is:

"I am part of the British public and we won't vote for people because we feel sorry for them, we vote for them because they are talented," she said.

Michelle said she would like to perform a duet with Meatloaf.

One True Voice's "Sacred Trust" got to number 2 last Christmas, beaten throughly and convincingly by the mighty Aloud.

Did Paula not write Spinning Around for Kylie? Which is great, and did, y'know, pretty well. Were there others?

She did write Spinning Around. Didn't she choreograph videos, as well?

I can understand why he'd be pissed off. He no doubt thought - like most of us - that as the competition progressed the voters would "get real" and vote for more plausible candidates, and that he was just being honest.

But what would be most irritating is the hypocrisy of voters who have claimed the moral high ground v PW and the cynical money grubbers by saying "looks don't matter, given the choice we prefer talent" when their normal tv watching/record buying etc activities so prove otherwise. It's a variation of what McCauley referred to as "the British publich in one of their periodic fits of morality" and it's a pretty nauseating sight.

It wouldn't be so bad if Michelle was a remarkable performer. Yes she's got a big, powerful voice but what she does with it in terms of phrasing or interpretation is utterly predictable and bland. OK, even that may be a smidgin more than the other finalists had to offer musically, but the truth is she won because of her looks.

her voice is a bit nasal for my taste - she might make a good Disco Diva type with some vocal training but that will never happen.
