What Should Tanya Do Next?

As I have recently grumbled on my page, Tom has decided to put I Hate Music out as a weekly 'feature' not as a weblog. This gives me a smidgen of free time which I will mostly use drinking gin. However some of my readers have suggested I use my critical skills to cover artforms other than music, something I would be entirely happy to do for obvious reasons. What if anything would you like to see me write about it, assuming of course that I am likely to spell badly and swear a lot as ever.

Tanya.

Webpages...

since it is almost unfeasibly trendy to trash the internet these days.

Erm, Tanya, isn't the point that you genuinely do hate music? I just can't see it working if you went for, say, sit coms or impressionist painters. What's good about I Hate Music is that every single word is believable (at least, it was after I spoke to you on AOL Instant Messenger - I admit I didn't quite believe it until then).

Well, obviously if I was writing about something else I would either a) only write about what I disliked or b) write about the things I like too, depending on whether the people who write to me saying "Oh why don't you write about other things?" want cheap sweary fun or actual criticism.

Tanya, I think Greg's right. Music was your first hate, and you should be loyal to it. Perhaps you could do something related though...

Like, have people write in describing their musical tastes, and then you build up a loathsome picture of what this person must be like. A sort of reverse AICON, perhaps?

I'd drink more gin but that's not exactly constructive.

Uh, so I would say, uh, use your critical skills and expand them to other subjects because I would have to take to drinking more gin if I don't have a lot of swearing to read. Even if drinking more gin would be, uh, nice.

I would suggest extending "I Hate.." to any of the following: Broadway musicals, sporting events, video installation art.

These might not be terribly challenging subjects, though.

Since IHM is already, um, influenced by Mr Agreeable, it does make a fair bit of sense that she swipes Cretinous, Useless, Negligible Tosser of the week, too. ;)

Tom, Tuesday, 6 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seeing as the NME appear not to have taken on the only good bit of Melody Maker, perhaps you should actually marry Mr Agreeable...

Failing that, why not simply turn your attention to the many familiar characters of life's rich tapestry in Mr Blair's Britain-- politicians, students, indie kids, DJs, TV presenters, overpaid sportsmen and women, people who drink in coffee bars, or buy sandwiches in Pret, or write weblogs, or... Do you get the idea?

alex thomson, Tuesday, 6 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or how about turning your attention to the readers and contributors to I Love Music itself, now they've so obligingly introduced themselves... I'm sure you can persuade Tom that it's a good idea, in a post-modern ironic kind of way. Tell him to think Kid A. ;-)

I think it would round your personality if you wrote about something you liked. Do you collect stamps? Maybe you have a favourite stamp you could tell us all about.

Turn your attention on me, Tanya. Destroy everything I believe in and stand for. I will repeat your words to anyone who has never met me before :).
