My 15 yr old brother to his friends: "My brother listens to great music - Charlie, what do you listen to again? The Beach Boys! No, man don't diss the Beach Boys, they're great. Alright, they're a bit gay, but they're great!"

Two spring to mind:

1. I was listening to the title track of "On the Way to the Peak of Normal" by Holger Czukay when my brother said, "He sounds like Kenny Everett putting on a German accent", I've never really been able to think of Holger Czukay's vocals the same way since.

2. I was at an ex-girlfriend's house and I'd just bought "76 Kids Forever" by Sudden Sway and I was playing it in her living room when her uncle, who lived with her at the time, came in and said, "Who are you listening to now, Rolf Harris?" And again, there was no escaping the fact that it did sound like Rolf Harris.

Depends on the pedals! If it's a Digitech Whammy then you have every right to be upset/ashamed.

It doesn't ruin them for me, but my friend always says the singer for the Clientele sounds like Mr. Burns.

a friend recently told me about listening to Fripp & Eno's Evening Star and her mom came in, picked up the record and read the back for a minute, and went "Hm... these guys sure do like the wind, then, huh?" and walked out

i once sent my brother Bonnie Prince Billy's Ease On Down the Road as a christmas present, via mom and dad's house, and my dad being my dad he had a listen to it himself before passing it on.

next time he spoke to me on the phone he said "god son, no wonder you'm miserable"

I was playing this beautiful tune and my roommate walked in and started singing Extreme's "More Than Words" over it. It didn't ruin Bert Jansch for me but it certainly ruined the song

Jeezy was briefly ruined for me by this Whiney post:

meanwhile, for a little while, Meshuggah was ruined for me by someone who said their music sounded like their amps "kept turning on and off"

I once put on Hammock at an afterparty at about 4am, a girl asked me to "turn off that new age massage parlor music."

It didn't ruin it for me, but my wife told me that Lindstrøm's Where You Go I Go Too "sounds like the music from a training video" and that did sting for a bit.

Like My Decals Off is definitely augmented by the idea it's actually a toddler with a pitch shifted microphone, I will say

Playing Holger Czukay's "Movies" when my brother said "He sounds like Kenny Everett".

Playing Sudden Sway's "76 Kids Forever" when my then girlfriend's uncle said, "What are we listening to, Rolf Harris?".

I had to admit there was more than an element of truth to both observations.

never forget

sometime around 2019, driving with my parents along coast hwy on a beautiful summer day, headed for a family event in orange county (laguna beach area) and dad asks me to put on some “nice music” to fit the mood

i say “how about the beach boys?” and they seem pleased with the idea (they mostly like classical and oldies) and so i put on pet sounds

after a few minutes my mom leans forward from the back and asks with a look of concern “… is this really the beach boys?”

i smile and nod yes and my dad gets this savage look of total disgust and sneers “they SOUND like they’re ON DRUGS!”

I was once playing Forever Breathes The Lonely Word by Felt and my dad asked if it was Dire Straits.

Many years ago when I played my friend Nick Cave he said, "he sounds like the Crash Test Dummies guy".

There was some Radio One DJ (I forget who) back in the day who played the The Dark Is Rising by Mercury Rev and then said the singer sounded like Orville of Keith Harris and Orville fame.

I gave a good friend a Phoenix album and he told me it sounded just like Razorlight (not a bad thing for him).

The Beach Boys were defo on drugs but Pet Sounds is far from an "on drugs" album. That's very funny

One that enhanced rather than ruined - Wow! by Beck appearing on the intros round in a music quiz and my dad going 'this sounds like THE CLANGERS'.
