What music has been ruined for you by someone's cutting comment?

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 25 December 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 25 December 2003 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and also:

Magazine's 'Song from Under the Floorboards' - "Who's this? Cockney Rebel?"

Band on the Run's Mrs Vanderbilt ('Down in the jungle/living in a tent..) - "Paul McCartney sounds like he's writing for Monty Python"

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 25 December 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

New Radicals, "You Get What You Give". All the celeb-rock hate seems out-of-place in such a great anthemic pop song, but I can live with the Courtney/Manson mockery. It's when they try starting shit with Beck that I get revulsed.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 25 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

in highschool, listening to the flaming lips in my room, father enters: "this isn't as good as the rolling stones"

brains (cerybut), Friday, 26 December 2003 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So was it the Flaming Lips or the Rolling Stones that got wrecked by that remark?

Jedmond, Friday, 26 December 2003 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

When a reviewer mentioned that Huggy Bear's boy singer Chris was the band's 'Einar problem'.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 26 December 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Guy goes through my DJ bag, finds 'Led Zeppelin IV', scrunches up face. "You don't actually like this do you?" "Umm, yeah..." "Never liked them. See the picture on the front? Whenever I hear Zep I just think of how that old guy probably smells"

dave q, Friday, 26 December 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf is wrong with Chas n' Dave anyway?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Chas 'n Dave are cred now - they supported the Libertines the other week.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone compared Allen Clapp to REO Speedwagon singer Kevin Cronin. I haven't been able to enjoy Clapp quite as much ever since.

mike a, Friday, 26 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Chas n Dave HAVE ALWAYS been cred.
Anyone who diises them is a music hata.

pete s, Friday, 26 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"We laugh indoors", death cab: "Hey, this sounds just like Billy Don't Lose My Number by Phil Collins!" Well now it does!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 26 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it seems as though I completely misunderstood the topic in question (i.e. someone else's acerbic one-liner about the song, rather than an acerbic one-liner in the song). Proceed to mock me as thou wilst.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 26 December 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate - ridicule is nothing to be scared of...

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 27 December 2003 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Enh, I'm used to it.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 27 December 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This happened today and although it hasn't put me off, I may as well include it cos it made me laugh.

My 15 yr old brother to his friends: "My brother listens to great music - Charlie, what do you listen to again? The Beach Boys! No, man don't diss the Beach Boys, they're great. Alright, they're a bit gay, but they're great!"

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 27 December 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

sixteen years pass...

Two spring to mind:

1. I was listening to the title track of "On the Way to the Peak of Normal" by Holger Czukay when my brother said, "He sounds like Kenny Everett putting on a German accent", I've never really been able to think of Holger Czukay's vocals the same way since.

2. I was at an ex-girlfriend's house and I'd just bought "76 Kids Forever" by Sudden Sway and I was playing it in her living room when her uncle, who lived with her at the time, came in and said, "Who are you listening to now, Rolf Harris?" And again, there was no escaping the fact that it did sound like Rolf Harris.

16 years on but the fact that it sounds like come up and see me is one of the things I like most about that track! Michael Caine by madness has those lalalas as well

Microbes oft teem (wins), Friday, 8 May 2020 10:49 (five years ago)

The band I was in recorded an album
Put it on in the car and the kids said "it sounds like the music from Horrible Histories"

thomasintrouble, Friday, 8 May 2020 12:11 (five years ago)

I was in a band that was once described as 'guitar pedal music', still hurts 20+ years later :)

Depends on the pedals! If it's a Digitech Whammy then you have every right to be upset/ashamed.

It doesn't ruin them for me, but my friend always says the singer for the Clientele sounds like Mr. Burns.

I was listening to "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" one day and my 10 year old son walks into the room and says, "Is this like a five year old with a microphone that makes him sound like an old man?"

BrianB, Friday, 8 May 2020 15:01 (five years ago)

LOL excellent!

a friend recently told me about listening to Fripp & Eno's Evening Star and her mom came in, picked up the record and read the back for a minute, and went "Hm... these guys sure do like the wind, then, huh?" and walked out

i once sent my brother Bonnie Prince Billy's Ease On Down the Road as a christmas present, via mom and dad's house, and my dad being my dad he had a listen to it himself before passing it on.

next time he spoke to me on the phone he said "god son, no wonder you'm miserable"

I was playing this beautiful tune and my roommate walked in and started singing Extreme's "More Than Words" over it. It didn't ruin Bert Jansch for me but it certainly ruined the song

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 8 May 2020 17:40 (five years ago)

Jeezy was briefly ruined for me by this Whiney post:

"xpost, like in that song he's rapping about his fucking sodium intake like a grown-ass man instead of being fucking snowblower that shoots cocaine onto the 50 yard line of the Georgia dome"

genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 8 May 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

meanwhile, for a little while, Meshuggah was ruined for me by someone who said their music sounded like their amps "kept turning on and off"

genital giant (Neanderthal), Friday, 8 May 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

I was listening to "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" one day and my 10 year old son walks into the room and says, "Is this like a five year old with a microphone that makes him sound like an old man?"

I played a Beefheart album at 45 and he sounded like Eric Cartman, which definitely is on my mind every time I hear him

a buddy of mine referred to "Horsehead" by Cardiacs as "the soundtrack to taking a shit" which I can't not think about now

Isaac Brock sounds like Bobcat Goldwaith.

Sorry!

Like My Decals Off is definitely augmented by the idea it's actually a toddler with a pitch shifted microphone, I will say

Playing Holger Czukay's "Movies" when my brother said "He sounds like Kenny Everett".

Playing Sudden Sway's "76 Kids Forever" when my then girlfriend's uncle said, "What are we listening to, Rolf Harris?".

I had to admit there was more than an element of truth to both observations.

never forget

sometime around 2019, driving with my parents along coast hwy on a beautiful summer day, headed for a family event in orange county (laguna beach area) and dad asks me to put on some “nice music” to fit the mood

i say “how about the beach boys?” and they seem pleased with the idea (they mostly like classical and oldies) and so i put on pet sounds

after a few minutes my mom leans forward from the back and asks with a look of concern “… is this really the beach boys?”

i smile and nod yes and my dad gets this savage look of total disgust and sneers “they SOUND like they’re ON DRUGS!”

Mark G, Saturday, 3 June 2023 13:12 (two years ago)

I have a few of these.

I was once playing Forever Breathes The Lonely Word by Felt and my dad asked if it was Dire Straits.

Many years ago when I played my friend Nick Cave he said, "he sounds like the Crash Test Dummies guy".

There was some Radio One DJ (I forget who) back in the day who played the The Dark Is Rising by Mercury Rev and then said the singer sounded like Orville of Keith Harris and Orville fame.

I gave a good friend a Phoenix album and he told me it sounded just like Razorlight (not a bad thing for him).

The Beach Boys were defo on drugs but Pet Sounds is far from an "on drugs" album. That's very funny

One that enhanced rather than ruined - Wow! by Beck appearing on the intros round in a music quiz and my dad going 'this sounds like THE CLANGERS'.
