Queen's Flash Gordon OST: Classic Or Dud?

I must admit: I really cannot stand Queen; their supreme tackiness is, by and large, overrated. However, the space trance of "In the Space Capsule" and "Football Fight" are pretty fuckin' terrific (and admittedly, the least Queen-ish in the bunch). And then, of course, there's "FLASH!! Ahh-ahh!! (Dwing! Dwing!)"...

fuckin classic just for the theme alone. the big battle at the end is soundtracked brilliantly as well.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"General Lukala - Flash Gordon approaching."

"What do you mean - Flash Gordon approaching?"

"On a Hawkman rocket cycle. Shall I inform his majesty?"

"Imbecile ! The emporer would shoot you! Interrupting his wedding with news of this kind. Fire when Gordon's in range!"

Berkeley / Sackett (calstars), Thursday, 25 December 2003 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't agree more. Ufkin Classic. Dudstroy Queen elsewhere.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 26 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Funnily enough I bought the DVD for my nephews (ages 7 and 9) and they're luvvin' it...classic! Apart from Brian May's wedding march anyway. Also classic : large parts of Queen 1, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack and Night At The Opera.

In my opinion, ALL Queen is classic for the balls they had to expand their musical horizons with every album they did...Hell, make that every song that they recorded. Any genre, any style was fair game to make an attempt at. Most of all, there will never be any equal to Freddie Mercury in the otherwise ghettoized world of rock. Most vocalists are one trick ponies. Mercury's talents knew of no such boundaries.

That summing up was like a Queen song in miniature.

pete s, Friday, 26 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Queen, but "Flash Gordon" is one major piece of poo dud.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 December 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

'the hero' rocks mightily

stevie (stevie), Saturday, 27 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Flash's Theme" is a classic, both on record and when it shows up in the movie. The rest of the soundtrack works well in support of the movie, but I remember being unimpressed with the tunes when I bought the cassette re-issue of the OST back in 11th grade.

John Fredland (jfredland), Sunday, 28 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Flaaaaassh! Aaaa-Aaaahhhh!"
How you top that?

...

alot of ways, really. Dino DeLaurentiis needs to cut back on the cheeeeze in his movie soundtrack choices.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 28 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, because Dino's oeuvre is so impressive otherwise...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 28 December 2003 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ouch

Queen's soundtrack: Dud.
Terminator X's use of said soundtrack (on "Terminator X Speaks With His Hands"): Classic.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 29 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Flash" is good, but it's no "Night at the Opera."

cuts from this rekkid have been sprinkled around the likes of Steve Reich and Lil Jon on mah pod. And goddamn: Bri's riff on "Battle Theme" is crushing!

love pretty much all of it…

Veronica Moser, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

Is "Battle Theme" the song that's played when Flash is flying the rocket towards the city? Because that's way over the top even for Queen, but totally fits the film.

snoball, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

1980-82 was an awful period for Queen quality-wise. And this album is no exception.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

do you dislike the Flash soundtrack more or less than you dislike Hot Space, Mr. Hongro?

Veronica Moser, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

Well I agree that 80-82 was dud dud dud for regular Queen albums, they were messing around with synths and funk and none of it was really working. The Flash Gordon soundtrack and "Under Pressure" were probably what kept them from slipping from the public's radar. Personally I don't like "Under Pressure", but the FG-OST is where Queen's bombast, pompousness, and camp really works. Actually I can't think of another movie soundtrack by a rock band that works nearly as well. So I say classic. And "Hot Space" is just bleurgh.

Veronica Moser, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

the only good track on it's a kind of magic is 'one vision', which was from the movie Iron Eagle. the Flash! soundtrack is all gravy though.

stevie, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

hot space had some kind of electroclash cache attached to it didn't it? and 'body language' that's on it too isn't it?

pisces, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

GIMME GIMME GIMME ... FRIED CHICKEN

sexyDancer, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

hot space had some kind of electroclash cache attached to it didn't it?

Yes, and it has a lot in common with electroclash - both are a) shit, b) derivative, and c) based on a style of music that was already seen as yesterday's news [disco in the case of "Hot Space"].
Actually I think that HS falls into the same category as albums like "Their Satanic Majesties' Request". Albums where bands lose their nerve and start copying whatever style of music they think is popular at the time, getting it badly wrong, and alienating their existing fanbase and the new fans they were hoping to attract.
