how come everybody's feeling the screwed mississippi? what about da unbreakables? (da unbreakables, mississippi, space age 4 eva = the only major label s+c releases[?] not counting stuff packaged as an extra cd. and maybe scarface did a nationwide s+c, too.)

who's going hard in houston, sliced and slowed version:

botany boys / c-note -- some of the first boys down with dj screw and the freestyle pro himself, c-note.

big t -- with those million dollar hooks and the candy slabs.

lil flex / yungstar / esg / grit boys / lil keke (birds fly south, s+c, please.) / DSR (dallas boys that go hard) /

slim thugg / boss hogg outlawz -- the boss and his click

z-ro -- and ,,, i think he's part of guerilla maab, so they aight too. and he just got sent to prison for two years, so he's credible.

chamillionaire and color changing click (download this mix. not s+c but good. "bootlegger's special.")
paul wall -- just split with ccc and back with the house. (LOOK FOR 'STEP IN THE NAME OF LOVE' FLOW) (PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE BAG LADY FREESTYLE OR XXPLOSIVE WHATEVER. IT'S HEARTBREAKING.)

big moe -- another og screw guy.
h.s.e. --
flip, obv. -- a lot of people are trying to hate on what he's doing now but he's still dropping hot verses on every single thing he does (he only has three or four [seriously! he likes to recycle] but they're all hot). and he only sounds good sliced and slowed. the leprechaun and ug only sound good s+c. (PLEASE DOWNLOAD 'DA FREESTYLE KING')

all of swishahouse is going hard right now -- magno, mike jones (who?) mike jones. if you want to hear s+c with the newest beats and flows and all that, the newest third coast stuff, just get the newest swishahouse thing. lots of new stuff coming out next month.

those guys are all, like-- it's rare to hear them unslowed. not many 713 rappers haven't done a s+c album. just kazaa for them and get whatever sounds good.

there are tons of djs doing s+c albums themselves and putting them online and half of the stuff from them ends up labeled as "DJ SCREW" on kazaa. DJ SCREW - P.I.M.P. (SCREWED). using "dj screw" as a catch-all label for all screw music.

10 SONGS THAT GO HARD IN MY WINAMP PLAYLIST:

LIL FLIP - SOUTHSIDE STILL HOLDING (S+C)
MIKE JONES (WHO?)/MAGNO - 24S FREESTYLE
MIKE JONES - GOODTIMES FREESTYLE
SOUTH PARK MEXICAN - OOH WEE (S+C)
LIL FLIP - TEXAS BOYS
UGK - CHOPPIN BLADES (S+C)
LIL JON & TEB - I DON'T GIVE A FUCK (S+C)
YUNGSTAR - PUSSY WEED ALCOHOL FREESTYLE

the first time I heard anything screwed was when my roommate at the time was trying to download "Ms. Jackson" and ended up with the S&C version, it was a fantastically weird surprise.

at the moment my favorite song screwed and chopped is Cam'ron's "Oh Boy"..."boy boy boy boy boy boy boy boy"

Can someone explain what chopped and screwed is? I've noticed these words on several threads recently, with no clear idea of what is being talked about.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 27 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it's slow music and then it's cut up.

'walked out of heaven' sliced and slowed by wreckage.

cloverlandthug, Saturday, 27 December 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that link doesn't work right away. you have to do some clicking. and don't get distracted by the 'return of the mack' thing.

i've been listening to a lot of sliced and slowed r&b. straight to da room on 97.9. sunday at midnight?? (right after michael watts' swishamix.) 20% speed it just turns it into i don't know what. totally soft and wide and i don't want to describe a blanket. it's nice. really nice. and he has callers and he goes 'who you want to take to the room tonight?' and a girl -- no men -- says something like 'i want to take my boy andre to da room tonight' and the guy goes 'and why's that?' and she says ''cause i want him to know that he's my baby and' i really can't give you a good copy of it, but it's so beautiful. that alicia keys with the talking part, god.

there are dozens of mixes of that stuff with sex titles (STRAIGHT TO DA ROOM, COUPLES ONLY, TAKE YO TIME, HOTTT) and pictures of pretty girls. 'in those jeans'.

I just like the shit where they play out a song for about 15 minutes and just flow over it with the slowed down voice. Some of the old Screw tapes i've managed to find are alot like the radio in London; you'll get a big riddim like Destruction played for like 10 minutes so every MC can spit over it. And you can hear everyone else in the room giving gun fingers, except the only time i've heard people cheer and shit on Screw tapes is when they start spitting about God. Over here it's about gun lyric.

i love the way the screw tapes sound like a room full of guys fucking around. it just sound like a dj and five or six guys in a room. people talk over each other and clumsily sing along to the tracks they're not rapping over and improvise new words to the hook and stop to talk and laugh.

cloverlandthug, Monday, 16 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

he always lets the big song lead off and lets it go for ten or twenty minutes. southside still holdin leads with twenty seven minutes of the wanna be a baller instrumental and everyone gets a six minute flow. it's amazing.

cloverlandthug, Monday, 16 February 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got a load of Lil Flip freestyles with someone called DJ Non Stop.. They're good but they just don't have that same essence that you describe, load of people in a room just flowing, leaning off that purple drank. '2 hours later i was making tapes at his house and didn't noone go to sleep untill the mics went off'. The screwed refixes of proper songs are fun and interesting but most just make me want to hear the proper song. Like, alot of the Screw tapes just have the most obscure G-Funk songs that you've never heard before and are probably just original s&c tunes anyway. So you don't even think about the idea that it's 'revolutionary' or whatever to slow a song down and cut it up and shit, you just concentrate on the spitting. repetitve. trance. I'm desperatly searching for a screwed copy of Ridin Dirty though.

scg, Monday, 16 February 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Flip sounds dutty slowed down. Has he got a new album soon?

The 1st thime I heard S&C music was on homecoming night when I was with my date. We were on our way to the spot, smoking a blut, and chillin. That S&C was right on time. You notice every single sound in the song and it's great! HAHA

i wasn't really feelin' it. sometimes the slowed n' slurred technique is gripping. for instance, even tho i don't like the original song, the dj screw version of in the air tonight has burrowed into my head since i first heard it. but here it seems more just like a parlor trick. i did like how the producer chopped up roth's vocals on the chorus, but otherwise it felt flat.
