Some crazy shit. This Nolan dude is the only one left from Bucks Fizz and he needed another guy so he hired the fella who used to be in Dollar. Then they had a falling out (apparently over the fact the guy from Dollar didn't like the bright costumes and wanted to wear black - no shit) and the guy from Dollar cut his own tribute band instead also called Bucks Fizz. So Nolan took him to court and lost and now there's two bands called Bucks Fizz playing alternate dates at Butlins around the country. The funniest bit in this doc. was when Nolan said: "I have taken Bucks Fizz to new heights".

Well, in a sense, he has.

How?

I saw a prog about 80's stars not so long ago which had footage of the guy from Dollar at his day job (making hotdogs). He actually did say that making hotdogs is a lot like making pop music.

Dollar were never that big in North America - in fact I first heard "Mirror Mirror" on a Mini Pops record back in grade school. A friend played me the original a few years ago and I loved it - just a classic, classic electropop song. (Didn't Trevor Horn produce them?)

Did they do anything else as good, or was "Mirror, Mirror" a lucky fluke?

"Shooting Star" is about the same level of quality as "Mirror Mirror". If you reckon MM is a classic you'll probably love it.

What was the Dollar song that went "made my heart beat now I'm waiting for you" (or something) - was it "Mon Amour?" That was so bad that I'd dance to it if I was really pissed and probably have a laugh.

Eighties Ed, Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Think it was "O L'Amour". I'm remembering "hand held in black and white" too. Bit more new-wavey.

Dollar's four Trevor Horn singles are all classic: Hand Held In Black & White, Mirror Mirror (Mon Amour), Give Me Back My Heart, Videotheque. Everything else (before or since) is pretty awful, although I'll confess to a grisly fascination with their airbrushed "Mod revival cash-in" cover of I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

i remember that documentary: it was on in the uk a couple of years back, IIRC. shortly afterwards, i saw the matt lucas/david walliams "rock profile" spoof of bucks (buck's? bucks? subs please check) fizz; it couldn't hold a candle to the real thing.

the really tragic thing is that nolan and david van day (for it is he) look *exactly the fucking same*.

David Nolan came off worst in the Bucks Fizz Coach Crash. He took a long time to regain his short term memory etc. This prob did not help him in his case against David Van Day.

Remember that 'reality' thingy?

Sonia: "you're a nasty smug selfish piece of work!"
DVD: "Welllll. As we can all see that's not truuuuue..."

(you do the maths)

An incredible amount of enthused drivel about Buck's Fizz and Dollar appeared in the NME in the 80s, by messrs Penman and Morley IIRC

And now, I'm quite sure, they never write, they never call . .

But there are cracks in the shining symbol of the dollar in hip hop, with a recent video by Jay-Z - known almost as much for his reported business acumen as his music - where he riffles a wad of 500 euro notes.

^^^whatta homo

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

Jay-Z made his first million from buying cigarettes from France and selling them on for profit in his local boozer. True fact.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

Oh dollar are actually mentioned! i thought Dom was just joking.

Hah, they are as well. A footnote in the history of the US DOllar no 23) Theresa Bazaar and David Burger Van Day named their group after it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Even Day is affected by the weakening dollar, as he is currently selling his home in Hove and planning to purchase a holiday home in dollar-pegged country such as Barbados.

for FUCK'S SAKE. if i want to read viz, i'll read viz, not BBC news!
