what songs would be the best example of ILM-friendly Indian pop music? Ideally it should be poppy but musically progressive in some way.. maybe even a bit camp. bollywood musicals can be included here.

A few years ago A R Rahman's Taal beat was pretty huge... if you lived anywhere that had a large Indian community you'd have been able to get hold of some mixtapes with the mix made more ghetto/urbanised... there was great mixtape made by some dudes from new york.

So search Taal.

Really pop: "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" by Udit Narayan / Yagnik, Alka (from the film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai") is pretty good.

"Ghanda Hai" by Sandeep Chowta is a bit Gary Clail/On-U Sound, which is pretty fucking unique in Indian pop.

But the best Indian pop song ever (based upon my limited exposure to it) is "Aap Jaise Koi Mera Zindagi Mei Aaya" by the late, great Nazia Hasan.

I think she was actually Pakistani. But anyway the song rules. Its Disco.

And don't forget the Raj Trio.

would some MP3s be helpful?

Nik (Nik), Monday, 29 December 2003 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!

also, the kings and queens of bollywood compilation is a pretty good and widly available introduction to some of the older pop.

alrighty...

GhandaHai-SandeepChowta.mp3

KuchKuchHotaHai.mp3

oh, and everyone now knows Mohammad Rafi (guy who did that song from "Ghost World": totally ILM friendly).

I have a friend in Mumbai that makes IDM/Tricky-esque mumblerap. But that's probably not what's wanted. He may as well live in Shoreditch.

the links above don't work.

use these instead (the title is translated below each one)

Aap Jaise Koi Mera Zindagi Mei Aaya-Nazia Hasan
if someone like you were to come into my life

Ghanda Hai-Sandeep Chowta
er, not sure exactly; it approximates he's crazy or just simply be crazy, or crazy

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - Udit Narayan / Alka Yagnik
again, approximately Something's (always) going on

Nik (Nik), Monday, 29 December 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What year did those come out?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 29 December 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There's this unofficial (??) DVD we were checking out at Aaron Dilloway's house of all Bollywood videos and film clips, some really amazing music. I know it ain't much to go on, but does anyone know the title? It's like 4 hours long.

Aap Jaise Koi Mera Zindagi Mei Aaya-Nazia Hasan - late 70's/early 80's [ you can stream a bunch of her songs here

Ghanda Hai-Sandeep Chowta --- about 2 years ago [ here's info of the film it came from

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - Udit Narayan / Alka Yagnik - about 2 years ago

Nik (Nik), Monday, 29 December 2003 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, those streamables are great!

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 29 December 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, you can stream A R Rahman's Taal se Taal (1999) here (go for the Western version, then hear the original which is actually better)

A R Rahman came along and things done changed, or so I here. This was back in mid to late 1990s, I guess.

mosin, Sunday, 18 July 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
i might be in love with nazia hassan. Any more Indian disco recommendations? I just listened to a 1981 track by Usha Uthup called ramba ho ho ho and it keeps turning into a hindi "I feel love"

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

pleez. anyone got a copy of this?

Usha Uthup, Bappi Lahiri, and the "Disco Dancer" Chorus - "Auva Auva Koi Yahan Nache" - Hindi disco from India; based on the 1979 Buggles hit "Video Killed the Radio Star" but the lyrics are totally different

gaz (gaz), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

bappi lahiri is a god, production wise. he also sued dr. dre and won.(if i remember rightly) tim simeonon produced a single by him, 'habiba' in the early 90's. if anyone can track down a copy of alisha's 'madonna' album i'd be forever in their debt (well, for a few minutes anyway) - it's the songs of madonna sounding better than ever.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 August 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that bappi buggles song here

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, dunno if i'm late to the game, but Kishore Kumar is great, Mohammad Rafi is great, and R.D. Burman/S.D. Burman are great as well. These fellahs were my roomie's fav's and his family are big 50's 60's 70's bollywood freaks. I find this era most enchanting--combining pomp and wit and western influence together to make gorgeous music. brilliant hooks. You can get surveys at almost any Indian district in most big cities.

Jubaleeque, Friday, 20 August 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

bappi lahiri once featured as a guest on one of the jonathan ross shows years ago - probably channel 4. there was a small sample of his discography on a table - it was about a foot high. and seeing as i cannot find my tape of this, if anyone has the bappi lahiri soundtrack for 'pyar ke kabil' i'd be very grateful.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 20 August 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i came home with about 15 bappi soundtracks today (all on vinyl and all from the late 70's-mid 80's) thats not amongst them FB but i'm gonna make a comp of the best if you're interested.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and if anyone has the "i'm a disco dancer" soundtrack i need it bad.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

also the "tarzan" soundtrack.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

wahey!

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

is that a yesyesyes gaz i have those????

also Jubaleeque thanks. i am new to this (never too late i hope...)

gaz (gaz), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone ever sue bappi? i think he sued dre or something but fucking hell, so far i have found some strange resemblences not only to that buggles song but also karma chameleon and the wombles theme (!!!)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 22 August 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

something to do with copyright laws in india being somewhat different to anywhere else. i might be totally wrong tho. in fairness, what percenage of indian music from the 60's/70's/80's and indeed 90's made it to the western world? probably not a lot.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 22 August 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

at least two tunes break into the synth and vocal refrain of i feel love too!

i love the way these 8-10 min tunes veer from synthy wooshes through pumping disco to bollwood strings to slow sensitive sections to fistful of dollars twang to synth arpeggios and back again.
