If Glenn Frey was never in The Eagles, would they be as critically maligned?

...cuz I've never minded the others, and of course Joe Walsh is a genius...Frey is the face of yuppie country-rock slumming.

Well there is the matter of Don Henley or as how Mojo Nixon put it, Don Henley must die.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Monday, 29 December 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

awww Don Henley wasn't so bad back then.

Henley was very underrated for his economical drumming. I can appreciate that, but I would never purchase any of it. Anyway, the Eagles were the epitome of indulgence and excess.
They could and still can harmonize like no other group that I am aware of and they sound just as good live as they do on record. I can understand why so many folks here despise them. They are excellent at what they do, and many folks here prefer mediocrity. So proceed on, slag 'em for being extremely capable musicians.

bahtology, Monday, 29 December 2003 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i can see the point. if you got rid of both henley and frey, then the eagles would've just been poco or america. i mean, who could work up a massive hatred of timothy p. schmidt (or whatever the fuck his name was)? you'd just switch off the channel and be done with it, just as you do with poco or america.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 29 December 2003 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they really critically maligned? It seems that whole El Lay/country rock/Mannassas scene has had quite the critical resurgence in recent years, with The Eagles at the forefront.

I do take issue with bahtology's claim that "They are excellent at what they do, and many folks here prefer mediocrity." Who the hell here is arguing on behalf of mediocrity? I mean, I don't think anyone's slagging them for being "extremely capable musicians," but rather that they're "the epitome of indulgence and excess." To that, I say "amen."

C'mon, you know we all love mediocrity!

Sean (Sean), Monday, 29 December 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

...witness all the gushing over yabbos like The Strokes or White Stripes or The Streets or Coldplay, etc.

ILubMediocrity, Monday, 29 December 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Heat is On" was rub, yes... But "Partytown" had the same opening as "NonAlignment Pact", so it scores points for that. (And then promptly loses more points for being a shit song.)

And while I genereally hate the Eagles for being totally dull, they were good at what they did (produce dull music) with occasional moments of OK-ness.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 29 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If Glenn Frey was never in the Eagles, somebody exactly like him would have been. Nothing would be different. Except the name of that one guy in the Eagles.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 29 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's call him, um... "Rob Thorne." In an alternate universe, Rob Thorne was an Eagle.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

If Rob Thorne were never in the Eagles, would they be as critically maligned?

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 29 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone in the eagles rules, whats wrong with you people? randy meisner was pretty ugly tho, so he gets voted off the island.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Glen Frey is the more country oriented of their two main singer/songwriters isn't he?

I have the impression their early country oriented material is generally more critically acclaimed than their later AOR stuff, so I guess that would credit Glen Frey somewhat.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Frey was into rock stuff tho, Henley was a singer-songwriter and country suited his purposes at the time, Bernie Leadon was the authentic hick

three months pass...
You are so shallow. I have been an Eagles fan since 1972, and been to every concert in the motown area for every album, and these guys sound just as good as they did thirty years ago. Who has been around as long and can still hit the high notes like these guys. NO ONE!! and your modern day angst ridden flash in the pans of today are okay, but can you honestly say any of them will be around in thirty years? Highly doubtful. So, take your Saliva, and put one you White Stripes, hang with your GOO-GOO Dolls, don't forget to pack some Eminems, and be an Outkast, and see what happens in thirty.!!! SEE YA!!!

The Eagles: the poor man's Byrds. They were, in theory, the Beatles
to the Crickets. Falling considerably short, they appeal to the
middle-of-the-road "rock" fan who wants to listen, but not too
assiduously, who wants to get up and dance, but not too energetically.
Nice, safe, bland, elevator music before being out there for 30-yrs.
And Glenn Frey, with all that Motown heritage . . . . Wonder if he and
his old buddy Bob Seger ever sit down and talk about where he went wrong.

if wasnt for glenn frey we wouldnt have sweet eagles litigations that span for years.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Don Henley also sang the Eagles' wretched comeback song, "Get Over It." No, I don't think Glenn Frey's absence would have redeemed them.

mike a, Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course Joe Walsh is a genius

Anyone who has a song called "I Love Big Tits" couldn't be that much of a genius

I read a great news story once about a singer in a band who battered his guitarist for fucking up the chord changes during "Peaceful Easy Feeling".

Eagles are now touting themselves as 'Americas Greatest Band'.

Surely that honour must go to the White Stripes?
