Nelly: Classic or Dud?

I think Ride Wit' Me is one of the best singles of the last year or so, i bought the album a couple weeks ago, but i've not really been in the mood for playing records so i haven't heard the rest yet. i didn't much like Country Grammar (the song) but with the single mentioned above i have high hopes.

so, opinion on Nelly?

gareth, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have not heard the album, but the singles have all been doing well in america. I give those St. Louis guys credit, they can all flow and they swing like motherfuckers. Their achillies heel is that they do not make their own beats. Their beats and phrasing aremuch more sophisticated than cash money or any of the other Dirty South lables (timbaland/missy excluded.)

The jury is out until Nelly's follow up and various St.Lunatic solo records. If they can keep the momentum up, they were talented and if not...

Michael Taylor, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Country Grammar" was, strangely, a grower - the repetitive sing-song chorus put me off, but then the compelling beats/bass/chime interplay won me over and now I like the whole thing. "Ride Wit' Me" is definitely the better song but overall I find it a bit tame, with less of the skank factor that made "Country Grammar" so distinctive (though the guitar part at the end of every other bar is cool).

"E.I." is the real classic though: a totally addictive and instantly recognisable chorus and some of the most beautiful, none-more-stoned bounce ever concocted. Nelly's narrative is more interesting too.

Tim, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All the songs sound the same. But who cares? (know 1 is saying the OBV: "Where the Party At" !!)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Comments like all the songs sound the same make me want to shoot myself in the head, cos they don't.

Isn't it a bit early to really have a great opinion on him? He's good, definitely good, Country Grammar was pretty immediately great to me, I love the bounce on it. Batter Up is FANTASTIC.

Ally, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally come one - E.I. (aka "old macdonald had a farm"), Country Grammar, Where the Party At, Midwest Swing all share a certain... CHORUS. I know not exactly but it's real close. Tho my point was that it's beside the point.... oh well.

Nelly was on some awards show right after Country Grammar blew up and in what should have been his shining moment he apparently decided that what the song had thentofore lacked was off-key bleating. In retrospect he was wrong.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a certain style of flow that is very distinctive, but to say that the choruses all sound the same or even THAT similar would be akin to saying any act with a distinctive style keeps sending out the same songs.

Ally, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer, was that the MTV Video Music Awards of 00? I think they were a late addition because DMX flaked out (AGAIN). They were runnin' around wherever, just shouting & whoopin' & hollerin', and damn if the song didn't suffer because of it.

I'll refrain from making any qualitative judgements regarding Nelly, because for whatever reason, I can't stand the sumbitch. I can't stand the similarities between the songs, I can't stand his "E.I. / uh oh" schtick, I can't stand his crap-ass monotone blathering, and I sure as hell can't stand the motherfuckin' bling bling. Nor can I stand any of his proteges / offshoots / hangers on. I have the songs stuck in my fucking head, and I hate it, and I hate him. GOD DAMN HIM.

And what's with that Phantom of the Opera / Hannibal Lechter mask bullshit?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, if only because I know people he went to high school with. St. Lou in da house, bizatch.

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's alright. Country Grammar was good, I thoguht the rest were pretty vacuous. I heard the St Lunatics album is quite good. I don't think he has the charisma to pull the whole thing off really.

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, does not sound all the same. Beat styles differ from track to track, some use the Cleveland singing-rapping, others don't, etc. (I'd elaborate but I don't have time.)

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmm yes, I would have backed up my wildly exaggerated claims as well but I wuz sleepy. :)

I mean they sound the same in the way that all Stereolab songs sounds the same - it's instantly recognizable for what it is. Which I'm saying I LIKE, dammit. Novel iterations of irresistable formula = essense of reusable fractal hip- pop.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nelly is definitely no dud. And Country Grammar is definitely a classic. You can't sell 7 million albums without having some type of talent. That being said, I believe Nelly was simply in the right place at the right time. His city is relatively new in hip-hop and his sing song voice was perfect for following up Juvenile and Lil Wayne. I do not like Nelly as an artist, but his production is excellent, which is why I like Country Grammar, Ride Wit Me, Batter, Party At, Midwest Swang, and the song with Lil Wayne. So Nelly has a lot of things going for him, but as a pure artist Nelly is cliched and played.

Phoo boy, make up your mind.

Anyway, I find Nelly rather lightw--wait, that's not the point, is it? Okay, after the first couple listens, I find his singles totally boring.

Jack Redelfs, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm saying Nelly is not a dud. And Country Grammer is a classic. He sold 7 million and he is one of the hottest MCs out now. And I lik his BEATS!!! As far as Nelly goes, I don't like HIS flow or HIS delivery, bu I like a lot of his songs because of the BEAT!!! Jackass.

Hillis 3000, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight years pass...

wow -- funny that this thread ended on such an angry note. so, reappraising Country Grammar almost ten years after release, what does everybody think? How has this dude's sound dated?

Just curious as I've been buying up a lotta rap albums from this timeframe for a buck or so on Amazon, and don't want to leave stones unturned, but my brain has mostly shut this dude's music out of the memory banks.

San Te, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Country Grammar is pretty damn great, couldn't really get with anything after that tbh.

nelly is great

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

country grammar is amazing as is the first st lunatics album

he was obv spotty after that but the joints w/ rowland & mcgraw are incredible -- so melodic

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

u think 'over and over again' is incredible, really?? sounds like nostalgia

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

country grammar the song is totally amazing, still my fav thing he's done. i wasn't super crazy about the rest of the album but it's pretty good.

the radio edits for the singles from that album always bleeped the lyrics in such a way that actually somehow enhanced the songs' catchiness. i was actually quite impressed, even though that's a very strange thing to be impressed by.

i heard nelly's new single on the radio a couple days ago. it's not bad.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

for real deej

i've talked about the bleeping on ilm before -- "midwest swing" using barn animal noises etc

"over and over" is the "i swear" of the 2000s

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 06:22 (fifteen years ago)

Brilliant run of singles but I've never been able to listen to any of his albums without skipping over and over and over again.

Moka, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 06:33 (fifteen years ago)

singles from nellyville are all varying degrees of i f/w this

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

even "pimp juice", which i totally accept that no one will ever back me up on, is a better 3rd-rate c. mayfield than pharrell

ballerrr (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 07:25 (fifteen years ago)

"pimp juice" is actually okay, but yeah, no

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 08:20 (fifteen years ago)

i hafta say the line "til you top the Super Bowl, put your mouth on lock" always bothered me considering that he was a last minute replacement for somebody and gave a pretty unmemorable performance.

he also had a few lines that were kinda groan-inducing like "you can't hold me if your last name was hand". but at least his music was catchy enough to make ya forget

San Te, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

i'll totally back pimp juice

nevermind, we totally did one and i forgot: nelly singles poll

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

i'm serious re: the radio play! granted i live in nelly's hometown so i guess they might feel somewhat obligated to play any shit he puts out. like when they put his "wadsyaname" into heavy rotation when that came out -_-

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah whenever i'm in stl i flip to the rap stations and always invariably end up saying to myself... "i didn't even think that they still cared about murphy lee here either"

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

country grammar is still pretty great front-to-back. (great, great bass sounds on that album.)

eating my words, Nelly actually has a big top 20 hit song in 2010:

song is ass

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 August 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

the one i was talking about, btw, was "tipping in the club." i actually haven't heard this one on the radio.

teledyldonix, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

er, excuse me, apparently it's actually "TIPPIN in DA club"

teledyldonix, Friday, 27 August 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

four years pass...

So I was revisiting Country Grammar and Nellyville the other day, and both of those hold up nicely. Haven't heard any of the albums past Nellyville in full, but I know singles like "Just a Dream" (2010) don't retain any of the distinctive regional accent/slang/vibe that's so prevalent on the first two albums, and it may as well be any generic Top 40 pop-rapper singing it. So when exactly did Nelly jump the shark with his albums? Is it worth picking up Suit, Sweat, Brass Knuckles, or anything after that? I realize it's diminishing returns after the first two, but I'm just wondering if any of the later albums preserve the St. Louis vibe as opposed to going full-on generic Top 40 radio rap.

six months pass...

Pretty small haul for Nelly bus bust:

The trooper was about to do an inspection of the vehicle when he reportedly smelled marijuana. He along with another trooper then searched the inside of the bus.

That’s where they found a plastic bag containing five colored crystal-type rocks that tested positive for methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.
