Is anyone interested in Neurosis produced by Steve Albini?

Their last recording was with Jarboe (Swans). A great but underly produced album. Apparently they are playing their new album out live in Chicago? Not released yet. FIND ME A BOOTLEG! I have no idea what Albini will introduce into the mold.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I could guess. Tinny and loud, right?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

and the drums will sound fantastic ?

michael bott, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am afraid to answer both of those. Are we answering to Albini's metallic drum engineering? I answered myself. What about the songs, MAN! THE SONGS! Righteous white stoner retort.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, tinny and loud are a bad thing, right?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the BONG, MAN, THE BONG?

(x-post)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It is what it is. It works great with some people, but not so well with others. It's the aural equivalent of turning the contrast all the way up. Every edge suddenly gets very sharp, every color polarized. On an album like PJ Harvey's "Rid or Me" or Nirvana's "In Utero," this is a very very good thing.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's going to sound great. As far as sharpness it sounds like you are referring to the compression/gating issue in recording terms? In these types of albums every nuance should be preserved. Banging guitar strings don't usually get recorded well and you find limiting and compression more out of necessity. That's what you refer to as sharpness and colorization? Innit? The louder you can play a loud album without busting a speaker because of bad 'plosives is good. Either way, I expect it to get good reviews. BTW, I did post this on Neurosis' merits more than Steve Albini's.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as sharpness it sounds like you are referring to the compression/gating issue in recording terms?

Well, yeah. Take "Rid of Me," of of my favorite records. There's a quiet/loud thing happening, which is a separate issue, but once the full force comes in, nothing is left flat. The snares crack like hell and the kick drum is all attack. It's fucking brutal.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to listen to that PJ Harvey again to remember it.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you like Neurosis at all? Kenan?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard them except as a random name drop.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

We're talking metal here right? I keep meaning to learn more about that. But I'm the guy who just revived the Hall and Oates thread, so I think I may be a little too mellow.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Neurosis are just really fucking angry. Angry all the time. Banging on things fast and yelling (as they were a hardcore band in the start, really.) Angry when they were shouting and hitting drums harder and slower.

I like 'em, but can't see being someone /really into neurosis/--that would be kind've weird. owning every neurosis album/single/Neurot Records thing. hmmm.. do people do that?

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, come to sf, there are many.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Neurosis are just really fucking angry. Angry all the time. Banging on things fast and yelling...

So no, this is not my thing. Nope. Not for little ol' dubiously heterosexual me.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Johnson own every SugarHill record. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

albini already produced at least one neurosis album ("times of grace"). it sounds great. i think he did the one after that, too.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

They're playing at the Bottom Lounge on Friday. Two of my friends are going -- two guys who have amazingly diverse record collections (both own at least 2000 CDs) but who are absolute suckers for RAWK and metal. I'm also fairly positive they'll be getting high beforehand, which made it somewhat of an enticing proposition for me but probably not enough of one.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Neurosis would fucking rule to see baked. Something akin to seeing High On Fire/Khanate live.. just total crushing murky messy awesomeness.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm always afraid of being the only guy wearing earplugs.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wear a hood so your earplugs don't show? especially acceptable in winter! or just not use earplugs. it'll sound better.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

or just grow your hair out. jesus christ, everyone looks like one of wally's friends from "leave it to beaver" these days.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaymc..What city is Bottom Lounge?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the Neurosis/Jarboe album was boring. Feigned creepiness and droning, droning, nothings for many, many minutes. Blah.

christhamrin, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The tracks are long.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Neurosis albums produced by Steve Albini:

Times of Grace
Sovereign (40+ min long EP w/ Times of Grace outtakes)
A Sun That Never Sets

Brutal and contemplative. Albini sound really works here, as all soundscapes sound sharp and desolate, and the heavy bits sound like a caterpillar on your head.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Neurosis albums produced by Albini are their best ones. Particularly A Sun That Never Sets, which is often a lot quieter than their other stuff.

I prefer seeing them live to hearing them on record, though.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
To the idiot who said neurosis just bang drums and are angry all the time are you a complete moron? Neurosis are one of the most boundary pushings bands in all of music, they defie categorisation. As for Neurot recordings, of course a lot of people who are bored with the same old recycled music listen to artists on that label, its all about music that is expiremental, epic and ORIGINAL.

adders@thefreesite.com, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. is there a way we can pit the ipecac/patton cult against the neurosis/neurot cult?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
okay, A Sun That Never Sets is ridiculous. For some reason, most review sites don't really rate it, but hell, I can't imagine this sort of thing done much better. As soon as The Tide changes tempo/time signature in that spectacular manner, you just know this is gonna be good. The mid-section of From The Hill with the electronic gurgles and that riff is even better (as is the end of that song, with a different, still-awesome riff circling through one's brain), and as for Crawl Back In (last two minutes are ASTONISHING), Stones From The Sky, and above all Watchfire...OMG

plz 2 recommend other metal that I would like based upon teh above words? and do you all like this album as much as I do?

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:20 (eighteen years ago)

it's actually one of my favorite Neurosis albums. really underrated.

latebloomer da nutty tarkovsky (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:26 (eighteen years ago)

It probably helps that this is my first taste of Neurosis. It seems that those brought up on their earlier albums regarded this as a bit boring/rote/stale. Whereas, from my perspective, this is emotive, cerebral, powerful music of the highest order. This may suggest that I'd enjoy their early stuff even more, but from the descriptions of the albums, I'm really not sure about that. This seems more my jam, the mellow meeting the slow and majestic, the increased use of electronics, the diminished reliance upon cookie monster vocals and noise (although of course both are used, sparingly, tactically, and devastatingly, when the time is right).

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

these guys are soundtracking my day admirably

Just got offed, Friday, 20 June 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Strength Of Fates" is, like, just incredible. This fucking band.

Just got offed, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

Neurosis is one of those bands that all of my friends like, and I like what I hear when they play it, but I just haven't had the urge to go out and buy any...
I feel really bad about this because I really do like what I've heard. Must remedy once I have money.

jonathan - stl, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

Get "Through Silver In Blood" and "A Sun That Never Sets", then re-evaluate whether you want to get the rest. Those two albums are absolutely infernal.

Just got offed, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

Can ppl please stop talking about Coldplay and start talking about Neurosis? "Aeon" is another astonishing track on TSIB.

Just got offed, Monday, 23 June 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

Can ppl please stop talking about Coldplay and start talking about Neurosis?

Yeah, because Coldplay is really biting into Neurosis' fanbase?

David R., Monday, 23 June 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

OH FUCK OFF I just mean that ILM is full of "easy option" threads which offer nothing and take away plenty. STOP getting your knickers in a twist about shit soft-rock and START getting inquisitive about this majestic band.

Just got offed, Monday, 23 June 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

ok

David R., Monday, 23 June 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

I think that Neurosis is really biting into Screeching Weasel's fanbase.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 23 June 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard of Screeching Weasel but I assume they were slightly earlier and nowhere near as good as Neurosis?

Just got offed, Monday, 23 June 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

I don't even know what I meant by that.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 23 June 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

Chicago's Screeching Weasel generally have a polarizing effect on most punk fans -- either you love their amateurish, tuneful Ramones imitation and singer/guitarist Ben Weasel's smartass-suburbanite, often pop culture-oriented lyrics, or you hate them.

two months pass...

the more i listen to it, the more i become convinced that Through Silver In Blood is one of the 2 or 3 best albums of the 1990's

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think you would like screeching weasel very much louis. i don't really like them either.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

i did hear a queers song the other day on college radio and it was a lot better than i remember them being.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

holy fuck the bagpipes + guitar vomit finale of "purify" just blasted me into new places again

and the best thing is that after four tracks hewn of absolute fucking genius, the three, arguably four best songs are yet to come

more people need to experience this record

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

they have always been blindspot for me for some reason, i should pick something by them up...a lot of my friends love them

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

Get "Through Silver In Blood" and "A Sun That Never Sets", then re-evaluate whether you want to get the rest. Those two albums are absolutely infernal.

this is a band who make music to the utmost of their vision, a rare band who refuse to compromise or stop short of what could be even better. they won't let you down.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

ˆˆˆwhat louis said.

csa, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Thirded. Great fucking band.

ilxor, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

they have this way with tidal major/minor chords in constant churning irresolution, so masterfully sustained, i mean tell me "enclosure in flame" isn't some bitch-ass way to completely crush an album stone-dead

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

2 Quick Points:

1) Lou--I must admit, as a fellow metal dilettante, that I admire the degree to which you've sought out and completely immersed yourself in the bands that've been recommended to you. In this case your exuberance is infectious. I haven't heard a note of Neurosis yet, though I about picked up Given to the Rising today. Worth it? I stopped myself because I remembered my feelings on Isis: "holy shit this is amazing and I will see the show and buy the t-shirt........damn, they noodle a lot, don't they? Why was I interested in this again?"

2) It's the aural equivalent of turning the contrast all the way up. Every edge suddenly gets very sharp, every color polarized. On an album like PJ Harvey's "Rid or Me" or Nirvana's "In Utero," this is a very very good thing.

This is the most accurate description of Albini's production style I've ever heard. Good work!

For what it's worth this month I've bought

The Red Album Baroness - like it a lot but likewise a bit noodly
Meanderthal Torche - fucking love it
Phantom Limb Pig Destroyer - brutal and wonderful but disappointingly only two or three standouts
Life...The Best Game in Town Harvey Milk - fucking love it

100 percent HOOS test (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

I now live down the street from a metal store/movie rental shop. The staff already knows me by name. This will be dangerous for my bank account.

get *a sun that never sets* first. it's the best of the later-era stuff. i like it all pretty much, but a sun is better than everything that came after it. (and everything that came after it is pretty similar to it)

art tatum HOOS & chopped (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

awesome, awesome band that at their most potent are the sonic equivalent of being sucked into a massive vacuum. 'through silver in blood' is one of my very favourite albums, and certainly one of the most intense i've ever heard with some really smart, brilliantly-paced dynamics. the best vocal duo in the genre too (however you want to classify 'em)

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

Neurosis go on a little, but unlike Isis they never waste a second. The two albums I recommend above are the two to start with, as Scott and Charlie intimate between them.
