You should. I've chatted with a few people on soulseek, and what I find is that when you start talking more about your musical interests, you realize they have a far better selection of stuff (that they don't offer up to everyone) that they'll willingly let you download.
One guy and I always share new stuff we find, and we download from each other every couple of weeks, and we met on soulseek.

It's fun! Half the time the people you talk to are ILMers anyway. I've talked to Mitch and Chaki via Soulseek after random 'hey i like your files' messages. Also had multiple conversations in different languages that I scarcely know - the people are very interesting!

i dont use soulseek but i do use other p2p things and i sometimes get quite annoyed if people have the chat function turned off even though i know i wont speak to them - is that irrational? i mentioned on the other thread about the person who downloads the exact same dancehall tracks from me everytime i'm on. after the dl's have completed, s/he moves them to another folder on the hard drive and then downloads them again. i was unable to extract an explanation. it hurt me, but i finally moved them into a different folder, and then it stopped.

I really like it when ppl message me in diferent languages - usually it's just spanish or italian and we manage to get by w/ my knowedlege of portuguese, but there have been occasions where I've just stared blankly at the screen trying to find out what language they could possibly be speaking. Still, it's nice to know that ppl aren't letting cultural imperialism keep them down.

I have this romenian person who's new to slsk and apparently thinks that you have to be courteous with every person you download stuff from. Every time he/she logs on it's all "can I download some files from you please?" (even tho they're already quequed up and downloadin') and "you are a nice, caring person" when I say yes. One time they even said "c'mon, you know you are the best for soulseek ;-)". It's kind of creepy, but kind of cute also. Sometimes I think that I should tell that it's totally unecessary, but I can't think of a way to do that that doesn't seem rude...

You mean messaging users? If you're using Nicotine, it's there, though it's not immediately obvious how to do it. You have to option-click on the user's name, which gives you a whole menu of actions, one of which is to message them, IIRC.

I don't mind if people download whatever off of me, be it album, song, ep, double album, or hilarious bears on trampolines clips. If you're just getting an album that's cool. However, I think it's nice gesture to send an im if you're downloading a tonne of files (say a double album, or my collection of rare polka tunes).
