used to donate frequently, but haven't since i realised that i download far more than i'm able to listen to and so end up giving an album a cursory once-over before filing it away in the archives. plus i think i developed mild obsessive-compulsive disorder regarding consistent file naming. help.

Ack! I'm suffering the same symptoms.

Over the last week or so, I've downloaded about 3GB. I'm well-behaved and only looking for stuff I really want, until I hit somebody with a super-fast connection, then it's on.

Has there ever been talk of an ILX SLSK chatroom for trading?

can i be the only one to be a little paranoid about being on record as paying to steal music?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

admittedly, it's not the same as actually having to pay to use the service, but it seems like giving kickbacks to the guys who hijack the trucks you buy your half-price cigarettes from.

I'm donating just to encourage these fine open-source programmers to continue their work.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 3 January 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

soulseek isn't open source; if it were, the source code would be available for others to inspect and improve on, which would probably greatly increase its userbase as alternative client programs pop up. on the contrary, there's so little documentation available that other developers have gone to great effort to dissect its systems in order to write clients for mac, linux etc.

having said that, it's a damn fine network -- easily the best filesharing option since audiogalaxy -- and i'm more than happy to give the developers some deserved compensation.

What perks do you get?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 3 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But fiddo, what if your family don't like bread? They like... cigarettes?

Leee Smith (Leee), Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you're put straight to the front of the download queue, so no more waiting ten hours for the one track you're after because somebody else is trying to download several gigabytes of skiffle from the same person on a dial-up account.
