No reason in particular for this pairing, other than the fact that Uncle Tupelo and Scud Mountain Boys were peers of one another. Who's done better work in the post-breakup era?

Sub-thread: Whose singing voice is more distinctive, iyo?

Voice? Well, I've never heard Tweedy sing--just TALK his lameass lyrics. So guess Pernice, but he's not brilliant or anything. Anything Blunstoney is good a course

Definitely Joe Pernice. Jeff's voice isn't emotional enough for me. And Joe was nice to me about his guitarist's feedback deafening me last year.

Summerteeth is better than any Pernice, but it's also in a completely different league to any other Wilco. Wilco = one classic album; Pernice = 4 classic albums (Chappaquiddick Skyline ain't quite there). Pernice wins.

Tweedy. Not brilliant, but the Pernice stuff I've heard is far too saccharine for me.

one year passes...
Pernice easily. Check out the new live Pernice Bros. cd Nobody's Watching, Nobody's Listening. Blows the roof off anything Tweedy's done.

I know it's cool to hate on Wilco here (omgf middlebrowsssss_) but listening to Joe Pernice is like getting hit over the head with a big bag of wuss. Big Tobacco is the only post-SMB stuff worth spending much time on for me, and I kind of liked the Scuds, or at least Massachusetts.

On the other hand I can find at least something to like on every Wilco record I've heard. I'd rather hear At Least That's What You Said on repeat 8 times than, say, Overcome By Happiness once through.

I have no opinion on distinctiveness of singing because that's the sort of thing people I hate sit around talking about earnestly over a cup of tea.

"Cigarette Sandwich" is a jam, & I like "Massachusetts" pretty well. I didn't really like the album Massachusetts that well otherwise, too many dirges for my liking.

Interesting. Liked Pernice Brothers better than Scud Mountain Boys (although I never listened much to Scud)

yeah i'm more of a pernice bros. fan than scuds, but the scuds records have their moments. always love "holy ghost" from massachussets.

the first three pernice bros. albums are stellar imo. he really hit his stride there. haven't been as nuts about what's come after, but still some good things throughout.
