Is this the new album?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 1 January 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. It will be released in February.

Knife Play will probably always be my favorite but Fabulous Muscles definitely shows signs of improvement over everything Jamie Stewart has done so far. "Clowne Towne" might be Xiu Xiu's best song yet.

It's very very good. Quite a shift in their sound on a few tracks (for instance, "I Luv the Valley" starts off sounding exactly like a Modest Mouse song!) It has some of Jamie's best songs yet (title track, Crank Heart, and Clowne Towne, which sounds exactly like something offa the Spirited Away soundtrack), and it earns bonus kudos for having one of the most shocking, blatant and sonically disturbing anti-war tracks ever recorded, although it is probably just as easy to find it completely hilarious.

Only one even vaguely duff track ('Mike').

OTM, but I like it anyway. I liked "Mike" also.

I got a copy for the college radio station and plan to call it "Bizarro Postal Service" on the little sticker I put on the case. Because the kids love the Postal Service, that is for sure.

Also great - the synthy blupy horns on "Bunny Gamer".

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Postal Service is insipid and terrible. Please don't compare Xiu Xiu to that crap.

I just saw Jamie do a solo Xiu Xiu set in NY with Michael Gira and it was fucking great. If you're a Xiu Xiu fan definitely take advantage of a solo Jamie show if you get the chance.

in my experience xiu xiu/jamie stewart is about a hundred times better live than on record

This and Knife Party are the only Xiu Xiu albums I'll ever need. This album in particular brings back good memories, it makes me feel old too, it's been 9 years now.. I Luv the Valley and Clowne Towne are amongst my favorite songs of the past decade, seems ILM doesn't care much about him.

Moka, Monday, 4 November 2013 21:42 (eleven years ago)

i was saying this on another thread but his production is super underrated, it seems like the actual music gets overshadowed by his persona (or people's perception of his persona).
