Welcome to the Official Mp3 CDR Swapping Thread for Q1 2004 - The Western World Is Not Invited Edition

Below is the tracklist for a new mp3 archive I'm offering for swaps. This collection is a mixture of Latin, Cajun, Reggae, Mbalax/Mbube/Mbanque, Bhangra and Eastern European folk music. (Note: It was my original intent to create an mp3 archive of each of the above genres, but the local libararies CD collection was not the treasure trove it's cracked up to be. Mostly because some dipshite with the Initials RJR donated a bazillion CDs to the library, all of them after he had loving scrubbed the playing surface with pea-gravel. Sadistic asshole... anyhow...)

Check out the tracklist below. Total of 702MB, 133 complete tracks. Nearly 3/4ths are direct rips using Razorlame v1.1.5.1342 (with LAME.dll v3.93.1) with these settings:

-b 192 -m s -h -V 1 -B 320 --resample 44.1

So the sound is quite good.

If you like what you see and are interested in swapping, go to the bottom of this post for further details....

I have no idea what that means? Do you mean these are these all one CD?

I'd quite like some of that Gal Costa stuff and if you could recommend an Arabic item, that also.

Nik (Nik), Thursday, 1 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what that means?
44.1 samplerate, Variable bitrate

Do you mean these are these all one CD?
Yes. All those tracks are on one CDR.

I'd quite like some of that Gal Costa stuff...
If you're interested in a swap, contact me at my email address.

...and if you could recommend an Arabic item, that also.
Theres about 10 tracks one there that are Middle-Eastern style ("Arab-pop"? I don't know the names of any of the subgenres from that part of the world)
The Arabic tracks are the ones I liked best off of the (only) two CDs I found in the Library.
(Tangentially related Side note: I couldn't find a single Ofra Haza or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan track anywhere on either WinMX or Shareza. WTF!?)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 1 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oops. never finished answering his first question.
I have no idea what that means?
44.1 samplerate, Variable bitrate with a minimum of 192 and a maximum of 320. Uses no hi-pass or low-pass filters. Uses the "Quality" optimization set instead of the "Speed" optimization set.
It's a fancy way of saying the sound is almost as good as the original CD.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 1 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to come back to this thread later and knitpick.

Hanan is one of the more enjoyable "New Sound" singers I know of, though I don't know her songs by title. (I have the original Lebanese mafia cassette editions.) It warms my heart to see anyone else mentioning Hanan and Kazem el-Saher, even though I am not really a fan of either one. Mohammed Fouad is pretty awful, from what I remember.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 2 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This seems like a collection of mostly non-western, or anyway non-Aglophone, music which happens to have been well marketed in the west.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 2 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Mohammed Fouad is pretty awful, from what I remember.
The track I allowed into the mix is a bit cheesy, but it was cheesy in a way that was new and exotic (to me at least) and it kinda grew on me, so I let it stay. The track listed starts out sounding like middle eastern Gary Numan and quickly turns into middle eastern...um...Up with People. Hilarious. No wonder it's called "Humour"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

cheerful backup singers chirpily chanting
"kill kill kill the western infidel/
show Allah how much you care"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, I don't think so. These guys love decadent American pop culture.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 3 January 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm just fantasizing.
Maybe there would be fewer hardline fundamentalists if they had more pop in their diet. I dunno.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 3 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

anyhow. Time to get serious. If no-one is interested in this offer, I can switch it around. ie. make the "Fear of a Celtic Planet" disc the main dish and the "Western World Not Invited" disc as the add-on?
Granted, the FOaCP discs track list is still in a state of flux...

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 3 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more interested in a 75/80 minute CDR only one track by each selected artist without compression. I'm trying to put a tracklist together. I'm not sure how it's going to work as the main constellations of albums in my collection cover Greek/Balkan music and Latin American New Song with a smattering of others. They might not work well together. I'm rather slow at this type of thing but I'll post again in a few weeks. I'm not quite sure what the 'Western World' consists of and how come Edith Piaf makes your list, Custos. I'm excluding North America and Western Europe, well sort of because of course these regions are included in all sorts of ways.

Amarga (Amarga), Sunday, 4 January 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not quite sure what the 'Western World' consists of and how come Edith Piaf makes your list, Custos.
I had 5 megabytes of space left on the disc and that specific song seemed to fit the 'exotic' vibe of the rest of archive. I guess she gets in because she wasn't speaking english and had a slightly non-Western tinge to her sound. Same reason Beausoliel gets in (This is my story, and I'm stickin' to it.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Never mind this project. I'm abandoning it. The new Official MP3 CDR Swapping Thread for Q1 2004 (No, Really this time!) starts in This thread here.

Step lively now and don't crowd yer neighbor.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 19 January 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I`m interesting in this project.I would like get some folk of the world and I have some interestings from some countries. How can I be in this project?
