I think these kinds of threads tend rest on the same assumption that a lot of those wacky fundamentalist Christians appear to have in mind- if you're somehow not dropping to your knees in praising the big bloke up in the sky as much as you can every single flipping microsecond whilst wearing a huge crucifix with attendant Bible quote writ large in a massive neon sign, and then going off to church for a 5 hour service in which you dance like a madman to some corny "gospel" band and falling down, foaming at the mouth and speaking in tongues, then you're IN LEAGUE WITH SATAN!!!!!!!!!

I mean, for flips sake, how actual real Satan-worshipping dudes can you name that have done classic tunes that everyone knows?!?!?! (I'll make it easy for you, and include joke Satanists like Marilyn Manson here!!!!) Not really very many is there!!!!! anyhow, it's not "The Devil" that has the good choons. Alot of good songs tend to concern themselves with matters of passion and desire. Passion and desire are only a bad thing in the minds of "Christians" because that religion was tainted early on with Gnostic notions of "the matter world" being inherently "corrupt" and "evil";
This unfortunately leads to the notion that life is something to be merely endured and not enjoyed. So when the Gnosticized Christian sees this:
Some hottie in skimpy clothes doing the hoochie dance in the background while some shaggy stud passionately bellows of his need to get his freaky deaky going wiiiiild
The Gnosticized Christian feels offended because the music creates the "illusion" that life in the material world is fun and enjoyable, and therefore heresy.

I think somebody (Ambrose Beirce, maybe) who once said that a Puritan is someone who is paralyzed by the gripping fear that someone somewhere is enjoying themselves.

The original 'the devil has all the best tunes' quote was from a sermon given in the eighteen hundreds (I think). It was meant as a rallying cry for 'religious' music, as in 'fuck satan, let's groove with the choir of angels grinding wing to wing'.

People have generally followed this advice.
